Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful tool for structural analysis. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time because the FEM resuires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For overcoming this problem, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. In this paper, the authors formulate vibration analysis algorithm for a complex and large lattice type structure using the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through numerical computational and experimental results for a lattice type structure.

This work presents the three-dimensional extended strain smoothing approach in the framework of finite element method, so-called smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) for quasi-incompressible hyperelastic materials undergoing the large deformations. The proposed method is known that the incompressible limits, such as over-estimation of stiffness and distorted mesh sensitivity, can be overcome in two dimensions. Therefore, in this paper, the idea of Cell-based, Edge-based and Node-based strain smoothing approaches is extended to three-dimensions. The construction of subcells and smoothing domains for each methods are explained. The smoothed strain-displacement matrix and the stiffness matrix are obtained on each smoothing domain in the same manner with two-dimensional S-FEM. Various numerical tests are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of 3D-S-FEM. The obtained results are compared with analytical solutions to express the efficacy of the methods.
A stepped beam with immovable ends under the free and forced vibrations with large amplitude is investigated by using the finite element method to show the effects of longitudinal displacement, shear deformation and rotary inertia. A modified harmonic force matrix is introduced for analysis of finite amplitude vibration of the stepped beam under uniform harmonic loading and a beam under nonuniform harmonic loading. Numerical examples are analysed for deflections and natural frequencies of stepped beam under various support conditions. Results show that the proposed method is valid and efficient.

Interfacial crack problems between fiber and matrix in composite materials are discussed. A series of interfacial crack initiation and propagation experiments are conducted using the biaxial loading device for various mode-mixes. Normal crack opening displacement (NCOD) is measured near crack front by a crack opening interferometry and used for extracting fracture parameters. From mixed mode interfacial crack initiation experiments, large increase in toughness with shear components is observed. Initial velocity of crack propagation is very dependent upon the mode-mixes. It increased with positive mode-mix due to the increase of stress singularities ahead of crack front and decreased with negative mode-mix resulting from the increase of the degree of compressive stress behind the crack front. Crack propagation was less accelerated with positive mode-mix than the negative mode-mix.

The three dimensional analysis of Framed-Tube structures is neither easy nor efficient because of longer computational time, large memory requirement, tedious input preparation and bulky output. An efficient analysis model for framed-tube structure is proposed in this study. The proposed model can save the computational effort by using the assumption of the rigid floor diaphragm effect and matrix condensation technique. Moreover, it is develpoed by assembling two dimensional frames using the link degrees of freedom which are temporary used to satisfy the vertical displacement compatibility at the corners of a framed-tube. The accuracy and the efficiency of this analytical model is established by comparing with the results using the computer code SAPIV which is based on the three dimensional finite element model.

For the same configuration, the stiffness of 6-node two dimensional isoparametric is stiffer than that of 8-node two dimensional isoparametric element. This phenomenon may be called 'Relative Stiffness Stiffening Phenomenon.' In this paper, the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon was studied, and could be corrected by modifying the position of Gauss integral points used in the numerical integration of the stiffness matrix. For the same deformation (bending) energy of 6-node and 8-node two dimensional isoparametric elements, Gauss integral points of 6-node element have to move closer, in comparison with those of 8-node element, in the case of numerical integration along the thickness direction.

Navigating an unknown environment is a challenging task for a robot, especially when a large number of obstacles exist and the odometry lacks reliability. Pose tracking allows the robot to determine its location relative to its previous location. The ICP (iterative closest point) has been a powerful method for matching two point clouds and determining the transformation matrix between the maps. However, in a situation where odometry is not available and the robot moves far from its original location, the ICP fails to calculate the exact displacement. In this paper, we suggest a method that is able to match two different point clouds taken a long distance apart. Without using any odometry information, it only exploits the features of corner points containing information on the surroundings. The algorithm is fast enough to run in real time.

In the vibration analysis of Timoshenko beams by the finite element method, it is necessary to use a large number of elements or higher-order elements in modeling thin beams. This is because the overestimated stiffness matrix due to the shear locking phenomenon when lower-order displacement-based elements are used yields poor eigensolutions. As a result, the total number of degrees of freedom becomes critical in view of computational efficiency. In this paper, the curvature-based formulation is applied to the vibration problem. It is shown that the curvaturebased beam elements are free of shear locking and very efficient in the vibration analysis.
In this paper, we describe a fast image mosaic method for constructing a large-scale image with video image captured from cameras that are arranged in radial shape. In the first step, we adopt the phase correlation algorithm to estimate the horizontal and vertical displacement between two adjacent images. Secondly, we calculate the accurate transform matrix among those cameras with Levenberg-Marquardt method. In the last step, those images are stitched into one large scale image in real-time by applying the transform matrix to the texture mapping function of DirectX. The feature of the method is that we do not need to use special hardware devices or write machine-level programs for Implementing a real-time mosaic system since we use conventional graphic APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), DirectX for image synthesis process.
Present paper deals with the large amplitude flexural vibration of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) plates. Distribution of CNTs as reinforcements may be uniform or functionally graded (FG). The equivalent material properties of the composite media are obtained according to a refined rule of mixtures which contains efficiency parameters. To account for the large deformations, von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ type of geometrical nonlinearity is included into the formulation. The matrix representation of the governing equations is obtained according to the Ritz method where the basic shape functions are written in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials. Time dependency of the problem is eliminated by means of the Galerkin method and the resulting nonlinear eigenvalue problem is solved employing a direct displacement control approach. Results are obtained for completely clamped and completely simply supported plates. Results are first validated for the especial cases of FG-CNTRC and cross-ply laminated plates. Afterwards, parametric studies are given for FG-CNTRC plates with different boundary conditions. It is shown that, nonlinear frequencies are highly dependent to the volume fraction and dispersion profiles of CNTs. Furthermore, mode redistribution is observed in both simply supported and clamped FG-CNTRC plates.
