  • The effectiveness of a retrofitting method for concrete columns with particular weaknesses is experimentally evaluated and presented in this paper. Structural deficiencies namely the inadequacy of transverse reinforcement and short length of lap splices are very common in columns found in structures built prior to the 1960s and 1970s. Recent earthquakes worldwide have caused severe damages and collapses of these structures. Nevertheless, the importance of improving the load transfer capacity between the deficiently lap-spliced bars is usually underestimated during the strengthening procedures applied in old buildings, though critical for the safety of the residents' lives. Thus, the seismic performance of the enhanced columns is frequently overestimated. The retrofitting approach presented herein involves reinforced concrete jacketing of the column sub-assemblages and welding of the lap-spliced bars to prevent the splice failure and conform to the provisions of modern design Codes. The cyclic lateral loading response of poorly confined original column specimens with insufficient lap splices and the seismic behavior of the retrofitted columns are compared. Test results clearly demonstrate that the retrofitting procedure followed is an effective way of significantly improving the seismic performance of substandard columns found in old buildings.

  • It is known that lap splice in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial load levels. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of shear-critical reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with poor detailing of the starter bars in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with fiber composites. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with three confinement ratios and two types of lap splices. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled test mode. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios were observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

  • The columns of older reinforced concrete (RC) buildings generally have limited reinforcement details. Thus, they could be vulnerable to earthquake ground motions, leading to partial or complete building collapse. In this study, high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (HPFRCC) was applied to RC columns to improve their seismic behavior. Experimental tests were conducted with two full-sized specimens with limited reinforcement details, including short lap splices, while unidirectional loadings were applied to the specimens. The seismic behavior of RC columns was substantially improved by using HPFRCC.

  • In this paper the application of forging process as benefit technique in Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam bars and comparison to lap splices was experimentally investigated with four concrete beam specimens with same dimensions and reinforcement details. The reference specimen was with no splices and the other three beams were with different splices (100% forging in the middle, 50% forging, and 100% lap splices in the middle). Beams were tested with the four points load system. Experimental test results indicated that using forging process as new bar splicing method can have high effects on increasing ductility and energy dissipation of concrete structures. It also proved that this method increased the flexural rigidity, energy absorption, and ductility of the RC beams. And also this research results showed that the flexural capacity and ductility of the beam with 50% forging were respectively increased up to 10% and 75% comparing to that of reference specimen, but the energy absorption of this beams was decreased up to 27%. The ductility of beam with 50% forging was increased up to 25% comparing the ductility of beam with 100% forging.

  • Different methods have been proposed in the literature for splicing the reinforcing bars in the construction of concrete structures, which are alternatively used depending on design requirements. The most common approach is the lap splicing which is known as a cost-effective method although, its main disadvantages including congestion of bars at the lap zone and consequently, material wastage has motivated utilization of the other techniques such as mechanical splices (couplers). To better evaluate the performance of the couplers, 6 reinforced concrete (RC) beams whose difference is only the type and location of splices have been experimentally studied in this paper. Based on the results, the mechanical connection of the bars did not markedly affect the load-carrying capacity of the specimens. Moreover, it was observed that after applying the loads and failure of the specimens, none of the bars ruptured at the splice location and all couplers remained undamaged.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete pier columns in Seohae Ground Bridge. Since the bridge was designed before preparing the seismic design specification the bridge columns of hollow hexagonal section were designed and constructed with insufficient seismic reinforcement details such as longitudinal and transverse reinforcement lap-splices. In order to take the necessary measures to improve its seismic performance experimental study was performed by small-scale test for the bridge columns, From the quasi-static test for small-scale column specimens the lap-splices were not critical for overall behavior of the column if sufficient lap-splice-length was provided. The test results of failure mode effective stiffness ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio are presented.

  • A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.
