  • In this study, the experimental and analytical study were performed on the location of longitudinal cracks in the middle of underground box structures. The location where the longitudinal cracking occurred was investigated that the overlapping joint of the rebar and the section of maximum tensile stress generated. Using the finite element analysis, the strength reduction ratio of the rebar was estimated by lack of overlap joint length. As the result of adequacy investigation for the length of the overlap joint presented in the design criteria, it was analytically proved that the lack of the overlap joint length could be cause the decreasing cross-sectional force and concrete cracking. As the result of this study, the adequacy of the overlapping criterion in the current design criteria was confirmed based on the finite element analysis and actual field case. In the case of overlapping joints installed in inappropriate position, it was considered that a long term crack control would be need to ensure the sufficient safety factor for the designed cross-sectional force.

  • The structural epoxy adhesive used in car body assembly needs the highest level of joint mechanical strength under lap shear, T-peel and impact peel conditions. In this study, the effect of nano functionalized block copolymer addition on the impact peel strength of epoxy adhesive was investigated. DSC analysis showed that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer did not affect the curing reaction of epoxy adhesive. From single lap shear test, it was found out that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer slightly decreased the cohesive strength of cured adhesive layer. The addition of nano functionalized block copolymer showed beneficial effect on T-peel strength by changing the adhesive failure mode to the mixed mode. However, the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer just decreased the room temperature impact peel strength. It was considered that the addition of nano functionalized block copolymer could have effect on disturbing the crack propagation only for the case of slow strain rate.

  • In this study, the plasma induced by $CO_2$ laser lap welding of 6t Zn coated steel used for ship building was measured using photodiodes and a microphone. Then, the welding phenomenon with gap clearance of lap joint was compared with RMS-treated signal. Thus, we found that intensity of the RMS-treated signal increased with Zn vaporization; further, the presence of defects results in rapid variations with the RMS value as a function of lap-joint parameters. Besides, the FFT value of the raw signal with variations of changing welding parameters was calculated, and then the calculated FFT frequency value was set as the bandwidth of digital filter for a more accurate in-process monitoring. The RMS values were acquired by filtering the raw signal. By matching the weld beads and the calculated RMS values, we confirmed that there is a strong relationship between the signals and the defects.

  • Strength and failure of composite-to-aluminum rivetted, bonded, and rivet/bonding hybrid single-lap joints were investigated by experiment. A total of 82 joint specimens were tested with 3 different overlap lengths and 2 types of stacking sequence. FM73m adhesive film and NAS9308-4-03 rivet were used for hybrid joints. While failure loads of the bonded and hybrid joints increased as the overlap length increased, failure loads of the rivetted joints were not affected by the overlap length. Effect of the stacking sequence was not remarkable in the simple bonded or rivetted joints. Failure loads of the hybrid joints, however, showed the maximum of 30% difference depending on the stacking sequence. Major failure mode of the bonded and hybrid joints was the delamination of the composite adherend and failure mode of riveted joints was the rivet failure with local bearing.

  • The recent tendency in the automobile industries is toward light weighting vehicle body to improve the problems by environmental pollution as well as improving fuel cost. The effective way to reduce the weight of vehicle body seems to be application of new materials for body structure and such trend is remarkable. Among the various materials for vehicle body, stainless steel sheet (for example, 301L and 304L), TRIP steel and cold rolled steel sheets are under the interests. However, in order to guarantee reliability of new material and to establish the long life design criteria of body structure, it is important and require condition to assess spot weldability of them and fatigue strength of spot welded lap joints which were fabricated under optimized spot welding condition. And, recently, a new issue in the design of the spot welded structure is to predict economically fatigue design criterion without additional fatigue tests. In general, for fatigue design of the spot-welded thin sheet structure, additional fatigue tests according to the welding condition, material, joint type, and fatigue loading condition are generally required. This indicates that much cost and time for it should be consumed. Therefore, in this paper, the maximum stresses at nugget edge of spot weld were calculated through nonlinear finite element analysis first. And next, obtained the ${\Delta}P-N_{f}$ relation through the actual fatigue tests on spot welded lap joints of similar and dissimilar high strength steel sheets. And then, the ${\Delta}P-N_{f}$ relation was rearranged in the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_{f}$ relation. From this ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_{f}$ relation, developed the fatigue design technology for spot welded lap joints of them welded using the optimized welding conditions.

  • The effect of zirconate having - NH functional group on the T-peel and lap shear strength of $CaCO_3$ containing structural epoxy adhesive for car body assembly was investigated. Curing behavior of epoxy adhesive samples were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) techniques. The addition of zirconate up to 7.5 phr did not affect the curing mechanism of epoxy adhesive. While the small amount of zirconate addition less than 1.1 phr increased the cross-linking density, the excess addition of zirconate resulted in the increase of uncross-linked impurity. From the increase of T-peel and lap shear strength and the change of fracture mode from the adhesive failure to the mixed one, it was considered that the small addition of zirconate was effective in improving the adhesion strength of epoxy adhesive to the adherend and inorganic filler surfaces. The formation of uncross-linked impurity with the excess addition of zirconate was considered to decrease the joint strength by decreasing the cohesive strength of the cured epoxy.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the failure and strengths of carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap bonded joints with 5 different bonding lengths. Joint specimens were fabricated to have secondary bonding of laminate and aluminum with a film type adhesive, FM73m. Tested joints have the bonding strengths between the values of aluminum-to-aluminum joints and composite-to-composite joints. In the joints with bonding length-to-width ratio smaller than 1, the strength decreases as the bonding length increases. In the joints with the ratio larger than 1, however, the strength converges to a constant value. Final failure mode of all the specimens was delamination. To use the maximum strength of the adhesive, it is important to design the joint to have strong resistance to delamination.

  • Formation of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet arc welds has been a serious problem in arc welding of Zn-coated steel sheet. In this study, the relationship among welding conditions, welding materials and defect formation was investigated in order to minimize these defects in the CO₂ welds. In addition, the arc stability of the commercial welding wires was evaluated for revealing their effects on defect formation. Main conclusions obtained are as follows:1) There was no difference between shear tensile strength of the sound welds and that of the welds with blowholes whose diameters are less than 0.5mm. However, the welds with blowholes whose diameters are equal or larger than 0.5mm and pits exhibited tensile strength 10~20% and 30~40% lower than that of the sound welds respectively.2) The optimum welding condition to effectively prevent or reduce the weld defects formation are as follows:- The welding variables of 220A-23V-100cm/min and 120A-190V-30cm/min were recommended for minimizing the weld defects.- The gap between the two sheets at the lap-joint should be controlled to more than 0.2mm- Solid wire was less susceptible to the formation of the weld defects than the flux-cored wire.- The low welding current condition produced less weld defects than the hihg welding current condition.3) One of the reason why the amount of the defect was reduced at the low welding current was the gas discharging by the active agitation of the molten pool, due to an increasing in the number of the short circuit. • The optical performance of the mirror for satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. In order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this research, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. In case of the materials which show nearly incompressible behavior such as space adhesives, it is important to measure shear modulus which governs deviatoric stress components. Shear moduli of the adhesives are determined by using single lap adhesively bonded joint. For the shear tests, several points have been selected from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ which is operating temperature range of the adhesive. The shear modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity. The analysis results of RMS wavefront error w.r.t shear modulus are presented.
