Laser ablation propulsion(LAP) is the method to create impulse by laser ablation. It can be used to deorbit the space debris(SD), as its long-range property and versatility on any material. In this paper, we find out several requirements of the LAP system(LAPS) to deorbit the SD by simple numerical calculations of the SD orbit and laser beam flux. As a result, minimum operable altitude angle turned out to be a crucial variable to the LAPS. Moreover, if minimum operable altitude angle is 10°, and if the minimum distance between the LAPS and the SD is below 450 km, 1 m/s2 is sufficient to deorbit the SD by once. With 18 kJ/3 ns pulsed laser and cube shaped 100 kg SD, 1 m/s2 acceleration can be achieved by increasing the pulse repetition rate over 34~53 Hz, depending on the size of the SD. This capability could compare with the conceptual design of the Japan Establishment for a Power-laser Community Harvest(J-EPoCH) facility, which include 8 kJ, 5 PW@100 Hz laser.

Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials are one of the biggest issues in terms of light-weight and eco-friendly technology of the automotive, aircraft and ship industry. In this study, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials is introduced with different tool rotational speed. Materials used in experimentation consist of A357 gravity cast aluminum alloy and FB590 high-strength steel plates. Dissimilar materials of plate type are fabricated with width of 150mm, length of 300mm and thickness of 3mm and welding is carried out by the lap joint method. The correlation between probe length and mechanical properties were investigated according to rotational speed and welding speed at tool tilt angle 0 degree. Consequently, feasibility of FSWed dissimilar materials were successfully presented in case of cast aluminum and high-strength steel at lap joint method.

Composite lap joints have been extensively used due to their excellent properties and the demand for light structures. However, due to the weak mechanical properties in the thickness direction, the lap joint is easily fractured. various reinforcement methods that delay fracture by dispersing stress concentration have been applied to overcome this problem, such as z-pinning and conventional stitching. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. I-fiber stitching method is a promising technology that combines the advantages of both z-pinning and the conventional stitching. In this paper, the static and fatigue strengths of the single-lap joints reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process and I-fiber reinforcing effects were evaluated according to adherend thickness and stitching angle. From the experiments, the thinner the composite joint specimen, the higher the I-fiber reinforcement effect, and Ifiber stitched single lap joints showed a 52% improvement in failure strength and 118% improvement in fatigue strength.

In the present paper, a novel systematic method using the 2-D hybrid special finite elements containing an edge crack is employed to study the fracture behaviors of laser beam spot-welds in automotive structures. 2-D hybrid special finite elements each containing an edge crack can assure the high precision especially in the vicinity of crack tips and give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. Therefore, the numerical modeling of the laser beam spot-welds can be greatly simplified. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity and versatility of the proposed method. All the lap-shear, lap-tension and angle clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters (such as stress intensity factors, the initial direction of crack growth) are obtained simultaneously.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of a lap board that was developed to prevent musculoskeletal disorders caused by the use of a computer mouse. Study participants were 10 college students in their 20s who did not have any musculoskeletal symptoms. We analyzed the difference in upper limb movements, electromyographic activity, task performance, and subjective discomfort between 2 conditions: use of a mouse with the lap board and use of a mouse placed on a desk. Results of behavior analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the 2 conditions in terms of the average angle of shoulder flexion, shoulder internal rotation, and forearm pronation(p< 0.05). However, electromyographic activity, task performance, and subjective discomfort showed no significant differences between the 2 conditions. When subjects used the mouse with the lap board, their upper extremity was located much closer to the torso than when they used the mouse placed on the desk. Six of 10 participating students preferred the lap board. We expect that advanced research on prevention of musculoskeletal disorders due to the use of the computer mouse will be conducted in the near future.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the kinematic characteristics of the national speed skaters in the curve phase of 500-m race. Method: Seven national skaters participated in the study. Race images were acquired using a high - speed camera, and the three-dimensional motion was analyzed. Results: For skaters, whose average velocity in the curve phase is high, the velocity of entry into the straight phase was also fast. The fast skaters showed a larger maximum angle of extension of the knee joints than the relatively slow skaters, and the trunk ROM was smaller. Fast skaters tended to match the timing of the movement of the lower limb with the pelvis, while slow skaters tended to rotate the left pelvis backward. The velocity of the curve phase did not show a clear relationship with stroke time, average trunk angle, and lap time. Conclusion: It is important to skate close to the inner line, keep the trunk ROM below 10 degrees, extend the knee angle to over 160 degrees, and match the movement of the pelvis and lower limb to accelerate in the curve phase. The average velocity of the curves was fast for many athletes, but the competition rankings were low. Therefore, it is possible to improve the performance by optimizing the start technique, the running characteristics of the straight phase, and the physical factors.

In this paper, we develop simplified finite element (FE) models for butt-, lap- and T-welded joints by performing numerical and experimental experiments. Three-point bending tests of butt- and lap-welded specimens are performed to obtain the stiffness of the specimens and the strains at points near the welding beads. Similarly the stiffness and strains of T-welded specimen are measured by applying a point load at the end of the specimen. To develop simplified FE models, we consider the shape parameters of width, thickness and the angle of weld elements in the numerical simulations. The shape parameters of the simplified FE models are determined by building linear regression models for the experimental data sets.

This research reviewed the joint and duration characteristics depending on the surface treatment condition and lap spliced length in the PET film jointing method using the high hardness liquid material. As a result, the corona discharge treatment was improved to the contact angle, joint tensile strength, and joint peel resistance compared to non-treatment. Particularly, a surface treatment E (Corona discharge + Primer + PU bond + Polyester fabric) turned out to the best, and especially when the lap spliced length is longer than 15mm, stable joint performance was secured under the long term deterioration treatment of 16 weeks. Thus, the joint is considered to be applicable as the water-proof material.
This paper employed a systematic analysis using a 2-D hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack in order to describe the fracture behavior of spot-welds in automotive structures. The 2-D hybrid special finite element is derived form a mixed formulation with a complex potential function with the description of the singularity of a stress field. The hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack can give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. The advantage of this special element is that it can greatly simplify the numerical modeling of the spot welds. Some numerical examples demonstrate the validity and versatility of the present analysis method. The lap-shear, lap-tension and angle-clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters such as the stress intensity factor and the initial direction of crack growth are obtained simultaneously.
