  • This paper proposes a novel algorithm to recognize the curve of a structured road. The proposed algorithm uses an LCF (Lane Curve Function) obtained by the transformation of a parabolic function defined on world coordinate into image coordinate. Unlike other existing methods, the algorithm needs no transformation between world coordinate and image coordinate owing to the LCF. In order to search for an LCF describing the lane best, the differential comparison between the slope of an assumed LCF and the phase angle of edge pixels in the LROI (Lane Region Of Interest) constructed by the LCF is implemented. As finding the true LCF, the lane curve is determined. The proposed method is proved to be efficient through various kinds of images, providing the reliable curve direction and the valid curvature compared to the real road.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision-based method to recognize lane changes of an autonomous vehicle. The proposed method is based on six states of driving situations defined by the positional relationship between a vehicle and its nearest lane detected. With the combinations of these states, the lane change is detected. The proposed method yields 98% recognition accuracy of lane change even in poor situations with partially invisible lanes.

  • Recently, Collision Warning System is developed to improve vehicle safety. This system chiefly uses radar. But the detected vehicle from radar must be decide whether it is the vehicle in the same lane of my vehicle or not. Therefore, Vision System is needed to detect traffic lane. As a preparative step, this study presents the development of algorithm to recognize traffic lane curve direction. That is, the Neural Network that can recognize traffic lane curve direction is constructed by using the information of short distance, middle distance, and decline of traffic lane. For this procedure, the relation between used information and traffic lane curve direction must be analyzed. As the result of application to sampled 2,000 frames, the rate of success is over 90%.t text here.

  • In this paper, we address the problem of center lane detection algorithm for autonomous driving. Color information for center lane is gathered by analyzing a row line color distribution of road in front of a vehicle. The candidate pixels for center lane are extracted from the histogram of road colors. Morphological filtering and clustering process are applied to the candidate pixels to extract the exact center lane. We predict a expected area of center lane and search only the regions in subsequent frames, that reduces the time required for center lane detection.

  • Lane detection methods using camera, which are part of the driver assistance system, have been developed due to the growth of the vehicle technologies. However, lane detection methods are often failed by varying road conditions such as rainy weather and degraded lanes. This paper proposes a method for lane detection which is robust in varying road condition. Lane candidates are extracted by intensity comparison and lane detection filter. Hough transform is applied to compute the lane pair using lane candidates which is straight line in image. Then, a curved lane is calculated by using B-Snake algorithm. Also, weighting value is computed using previous lane detection result to detect the lanes even in varying road conditions such as degraded/missed lanes. Experimental results proved that the proposed method can detect the lane even in challenging road conditions because of weighting process.

  • Various social problems such as traffic congestion, car accidents and environmental problems(air pollution, noises etc.) have been happening in the Seoul metropolitan area that has the car oriented traffic system providing cars continuously. Along with this, the financial burden caused by current oil price anxiety made paradigm shift from caroriented to public transportation-oriented. Its typical example is an arterial branch bus system changing(bus lane through the center of main road) started in Seoul in July, 2004. But study on safety analysis of bus lane and characteristic of accidents are not sufficient enough to now. The bus lanes are expanded to provide roads for better traffic operation and accidents between buses and pedestrians or ordinary vehicles are considered main problems. This study divided each bus route of median bus lane(bus-only lane through the center of main roads) and bus lane at roadside by intersection and collected and analysed data about influence variables of bus accidents chosen in each section. We constructed a logistic model using collected data. As a result, bus lane at roadside are used by both buses and other kinds of vehicles differently from median bus lane and showed such characteristic in accident influence. Therefore access management to factors causing conflict and improvement of operation management are required. In case of median bus lane, the more buses moving general vehicle lane and traffic volume of section were, the more accidents happened. In case that stop line of center lane is not backward, view blocking of vehicles turning left caused accidents.

  • As increase awareness of intelligent vehicle systems, many kinds of lane detection algorithm have been proposed. General boundary extraction method can bring good result in detection of lane on the road. But a shadow on the road, or other boundaries, such as horizontal lines can be detected. The method using morphological operations was used to extract information about Lane. By applying HSV color model for color information of lane, the candidate of the lane can be extracted. In this paper, the lane detection region was set by Hough transformation using the candidate of the lane. By extracting lane markings on the lane detection region, lane detection method can bring good result.

  • Currently, various types of TDM (Transportation Demand Management) policies are being studied and implemented in an attempt to overcome the limitations of supply oriented policies. In this context, this paper addressed issues of effectiveness and possible domestic implementation of the HOT lane. The possible site of implementation selected for this simulation study is part of the Kyung-bu freeway, where a dedicated bus lane is currently being operated. Minimum length of distance required in between interchanges and access points of the HOT lane for vehicles to safely enter and exit the lane, and traffic management policies for effectively managing the weaving traffic trying to enter and exit the HOT lane were presented. A 5.2km section of freeway from Ki-heuing IC to Suwon IC and a 8.3km section from Hak-uei JC to Pan-gyo JC have been selected as possible sites of implementation for the HOT lane, in which congestion occurs regularly due to the high level of travel demand. VISSIM simulation program has been used to analyze the effects of the HOT lane under the assumption that one-lane HOT lane has been put into operation in these sections and that the lane change rate were in between 5% to 30%. The results of each possible scenario have proven that overall travel speed on the general lanes have increased as well by 1.57~2.62km/h after the implementation of the HOT lane. It is meaningful that this study could serve as a basic reference data for possible follow-up studies on the HOT lane as one effective method of TDM policies. Considering that the bus travel rate would continue increase and assuming the improvement in travel speed on general lanes, similar case study can be implemented where gaps between buses on bus lane are available, as a possible alternative of efficient bus lane management policies.

  • More than 80 percent of traffic accidents related with lane departure believed to be the result of crossing the lane due to either negligence or drowsiness of the driver. Lane-departure related accident in the highway usually involve high fatality. Even though LDWS is believed to prevent accident 25% and reduce fatalities by 15% respectively, its effectiveness in performance is yet to be confirmed in many aspects. In this study, the vehicle lateral locations relative to warning zone envelop (earliest and latest warning zone) defined in ISO standard, ECE and NHTSA regulations are compared with respect to various factors including delays, vehicle speed and vehicle heading angle with respect to the lane. Since LDWS is designed to be activated at the speed over 60 km/h, vehicle speed range for the study is set to be from 60 to 100 km/h. The vehicle heading angle (yaw angle) is set to be up to 5 degree away from the lane (abrupt lane change) considering standard for lane change test using double lane-change test specification. The TLC is calculated using factors like vehicle speed, yaw angle and reaction time. In addition, the effect of vehicle type and reaction time have been considered to assess LDWS safety.

  • PURPOSES : It is well known that experts determined the current standard dimensions of freeway lane markings. However, rigorous engineering rationale could be insufficient regarding whether or not the standard dimensions account for how visible the markings are to the driver. In this study, we seek to optimize the dimensions of freeway lane markings to improve their visibility to drivers. METHODS : The study was conducted as follows. First, alternative lane marking dimensions were selected which could be installed in a test construction site. Second, a video recording was made while driving on the test construction site. Third, subjects were shown the recorded video and then instructed to indicate their preference from among the various lane markings. Lastly, t-tests were applied to assess the statistical significance of differences in the preferences expressed. RESULTS : According to the t-test results, there was no significant difference in the preferences expressed regarding the lane marking widths. However, with regard to the dimensions of freeway lane marking, which represents line marking lengths, gap lengths, and widths of marking, the subjects expressed a preference for specific dimensions such as 6 m:12 m,13 cm, 8 m:12 m,10 cm and 6 m:12 m,10 cm. CONCLUSIONS : In considering the dimensions of freeway lane markings and their relation to visibility by the driver, it was found that dimensions such as 6 m:12 m,13 cm, 8 m:12 m,10 cm and 6 m:12 m,10 cm.
