  • Identification of rice paddy fields and estimation of their areas from the images taken by LANDSAT-5/TM were attempted. The results were verified by aerial photographs and also by ground observations. Changes of the spectral characteristics of rice plants were measured with a portable spectroradiometer during the growth period. Analyzing these characteristics, an index was developed for evaluating the growth and the yield of rice . Applying the index to the data observed by LANDSAT-5.TM on Sep. 26, 1986, Oct .20, 1989 and Sep, 21, 1990, it was confirmed that the estimated derived from the index agreed with actual values. The results well demonstrated its feasibility for evaluating the yield of rice by a satellite like LANDSAT-5/TM.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to use Landsat TM data for geological mapping and minieralized area detection. The study was carried out in Kyongju-Pohang area where toseki and bentonite mines are distributed. Rock samples of 18 granites, andesites, toseki, betonites, sedimentary rocks and altered rocks in the study area were collected for the study. The radiometric measurtment of the rock samples were carried out with a radiometer in the laboratory and in the field. The Landsat TM bands 2,3,4,5,7 were used for the measurement. The radiometric characteristics of the sample were mainly processed by the principal component analysis. It was found that the pricipal component analysis of the radiometric characteristics of geologic materials is very useful for the detection of the alteration of rocks and grade of mineral contents. It is expected that the technique can be used in the future for the efficient exploration of minerals in this country and abroad.

  • The main object of this study is to prove the effectiveness of Landsat data in detecting the stressed areas in forest by extracting these areas. And also to choose the effective bands for this type of survey and to reduce the effect of shadow in forest to improve the accuracy of classification are the other objects. In this study Landsat-5 TM data is used and image processing techniques such as spatial filtering and ratio are taken to reduce the effect of shadow and to improve the classification accuracy. As a result following conclusions are obtained. First, Landsat TM data is useful to detect the stressed areas in forest. Second, when detecting the stressed area, band 4 and 5 are the most effective. Third, spatial filtering and ratio are useful to reudce the effect of shadow and improve the classification accuracy. Especially, ratio has great effect on improving the classification accuracy between forest and other areas.

  • Remote sensing provides informations on the changes of the hydrological states and variables over with the temporal and spatial distribution to monitor hydrological conditions and changes for large area. Especially, it can extract a spatial distribution of hydrological parameters such as surface albedo, vegetation informations, and surface temperature to effectively manage water resources of the watershed. In this study, we analyzed the characteristic of temporal and spatial changes in surface hydrological parameters which is necessary to identify the spatial distribution of water resources. 5 Landsat TM data of 1995 which is collected for Bochong-chon watershed, located in the upper stream of Keum River, were used to estimate characteristics on the change of hydrological parameters and atmospheric correction was carried out using COST model. The study showed that the difference of the albedo by the land cover was very sensitive depending upon the change of sun elevation and the amount of water in the soil. The difference between the surface temperature analysis and the measured air temperature was from $2.5^{\circ}C$ to $3.86^{\circ}C$.

  • This study presents a correlation between timber Age, image bands and vegetation indices for timber age estimation. Basically, this study used Landsat TM images of three difference years (1994, 1994, 1998) and difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED). Bands of 4, 5 and 7, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SA VI) were obtained from Landsat TM images. Tasseled cap - greenness and wetness images were also made by Tasseled cap transformation. Finally, analysis of correlation between timber age, difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED), individual TM bands (4, 5, 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Tasseled cap-Greenness, Wetness, Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) using regression model. In this study about 1,992 datasets were analyzed. The Tasseled cap - Wetness, Infrared Index (II) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) showed close correlation for timber age estimation.

  • The Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) has suggested that spatial and spectral characteristics would be suited to evaluate water quality of lake. But, TM has not been commonly used for the analysis of in-land water quality, such as surface water temperature, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and Secchi depth in domestic research. This paper summarizes the analysis of Landsat 5 - TM image collected on 22 Feb 1996 for evaluation of chlorophyll-a and surface temperature in the Lake Soyang. And, field measurements collected in the Lake Soyang were used to obtain water optical algorithms for calibration of satellite data. It is concluded that we can assess chlorophyll-a with remote sensing reflectance and surface temperature with thermal band in lake Soyang. However, surface temperature calculated with thermal band of Landsat TM are underestimated. Relationship between remote sensing reflectance and chlorophyll-a using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 3 is as follows; Y = 17.206 - 6.4711 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band3)) $R^2$=0.8762 and, using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 2 as follows; Y = 57.77 - 35.771 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band2)) $R^2$=0.8317.

  • The environment in urban are becoming worse and forest is being recognized the major part of city by the increase of population and facilities. This study was carried out to analyze topographic environment as the basis for reasonable management and utility of forest situated in Taejon city and its vicinities using Sandst-5 TM and digital terrain elevation data(DTED). Forest area was extracted by Landsat-5 TM data. Distribution of elevation, slope and aspect was derived from digital terrain elevation data. The research area to analyze ropographic environment for urban forest were Bomumsan, Bongsan, Kabhasan, Sikchangsan, and Kyechoksan. Forest, the largest area in Taejon covers 55.1% of totaf area. This is more 5 times than urban area. 70.8% of forest area in Taejon city is located in elevation of lower than 200m and 4.8% of that is located in elevation of upper than 400m. Distribution of elevation is 45.7% of total area for 100m to 200m in Kyechoksan and is 92.4% of total area for lower than 300m in Bomumsan. Elevation of upper than 300m is 20.4% of total area in Kabhasan and is 46.6% of total area in Sikchangsan. The slope of more 20 digree is over 50% of total area in every area except for Bonsan and 35.2% of total area in Sikchangsan and Kahasan than in Bomumsan and Kyechoksan.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a method to generate micro-relief digital elevation model (DEM) data of the tidal mudflats using multi-temporal Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data. Field spectroscopy measurements showed that reflectance of the exposed mudflat, shallow turbid water, and normal coastal water varied by TM band wavelength. Two sets of DEM data of the inter-tidal mudflat area were generated by interpolating several waterlines extracted from multi-temporal TM data acquired at different sea levels. The waterline appearing in the near-infrared band was different from the one in the middle-infrared band. It was found that the waterline in TM band 4 image was the boundary between the shallow turbid water and normal coastal water and used as a second contour line having 50cm water depth in the study area. DEM data generated by using both TM bands 4 and 5 rendered more detailed topographic relief as compared to the one made by using TM band 5 alone.

  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied for regional geological mapping to a multivariate data set of the Landsat TM data in the heavily vegetated and topographically rugged Chungju area. The multivariate data set selection was made by statistical analysis based on the magnitude of regression of squares in multiple regression, and it includes R1/2/R3/4, R2/3, R5/7/R4/3, R1/2, R3/4. R4/3. AND R4/5. As a result of application of PCA, some of later principal components (in this study PC 3 and PC 5) are geologically more significant than earlier major components, PC 1 and PC 2 herein. The earlier two major components which comprise 96% of the total information of the data set, mainly represent reflectance of vegetation and topographic effects, while though the rest represent 3% of the total information which statistically indicates the information unstable, geological significance of PC3 and PC5 in the study implies that application of the technique in more favorable areas should lead to much better results.

  • An image-based atmospheric correction software ATC is implemented using MATLAB and SML (Spatial Modeler Language in ERDAS IMAGINE), and it was tested using Landsat TM/ETM+ data. This ATC has two main functional modules, which are composed of a semiautomatic type and an automatic type. The semi-automatic functional module includes the Julian day (JD), Earth-Sun distance (ESD), solar zenith angle (SZA) and path radiance (PR), which are programmed as individual small functions. For the automatic functional module, these parameters are computed by using the header file of Landsat TM/ETM+. Three atmospheric correction algorithms are included: The apparent reflectance model (AR), one-percent dark object subtraction technique (DOS), and cosine approximation model (COST). The ACT is efficient as well as easy to use in a system with MATLAB and SML.
