This paper describes self-localization of a mobile robot from the multiple candidates of landmarks in outdoor environment. Our robot uses omnidirectional vision system for efficient self-localization. This vision system acquires the visible information of all direction views. The robot uses feature of landmarks whose size is bigger than that of others in image such as building, sculptures, placard etc. Robot uses vertical edges and those merged regions as the feature. In our previous work, we found the problem that landmark matching is difficult when selected candidates of landmarks belonging to region of repeating the vertical edges in image. To overcome these problems, robot uses the merged region of vertical edges. If interval of vertical edges is short then robot bundles them regarding as the same region. Thus, these features are selected as candidates of landmarks. Therefore, the extracted merged region of vertical edge reduces the ambiguity of landmark matching. Robot compares with the candidates of landmark between previous and current image. Then, robot is able to find the same landmark between image sequences using the proposed feature and method. We achieved the efficient self-localization result using robust landmark matching method through the experiments implemented in our campus.
Inaccurate localization exposes a robot to many dangerous conditions. It could make a robot be moved to wrong direction or damaged by collision with surrounding obstacles. There are numerous approaches to self-localization, and there are different modalities as well (vision, laser range finders, ultrasonic sonars). Since sensor information is generally uncertain and contains noise, there are many researches to reduce the noise. But, the correctness is limited because most researches are based on statistical approach. The goal of our research is to measure more exact robot location by matching between built VRML 3D model and real vision image. To determine the position of mobile robot, landmark-localitzation technique has been applied. Landmarks are any detectable structure in the physical environment. Some use vertical lines, others use specially designed markers, In this paper, specially designed markers are used as landmarks. Given known focal length and a single image of three landmarks it is possible to compute the angular separation between the lines of sight of the landmarks. The image-processing and neural network pattern matching techniques are employed to recognize landmarks placed in a robot working environment. After self-localization, the 2D scene of the vision is overlaid with the VRML scene.
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of voxel size on the accuracy of landmark identification in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: CBCT images were obtained from 15 dry human skulls with two different voxel sizes; 0.39 mm and 0.10 mm. Three midline landmarks and eight bilateral landmarks were identified by 5 examiners and were recorded as three-dimensional coordinates. In order to compare the accuracy of landmark identification between large and small voxel size images, the difference between best estimate (average value of 5 examiners' measurements) and each examiner's value were calculated and compared between the two images. Result: Landmark identification errors showed a high variability according to the landmarks in case of large voxel size images. The small voxel size images showed small errors in all landmarks. The landmark identification errors were smaller for all landmarks in the small voxel size images than in the large voxel size images. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that landmark identification errors could be reduced by using smaller voxel size scan in CBCT images.

Shape analysis is a method for measuring, describing and comparing the shape of objects in geometric space. An important aspect is to obtain Procrustes distance based on least square method. We note that the shape is all the geometrical information that remains when location, scale and rotational effects are filtered out from an object. However, and unfortunately, when we cannot measure some landmarks which are some biologically or geometrically meaningful points of any object, it is not possible to measure the variation of all shapes of an object, including that of the incomplete object. Hence, we need to replace the missing landmarks. In particular, Albers and Gower (2010) studied the missing rows of configurations in Procrustes analysis. They noted that the convergence of their approach can be quite slow. In this study, alternatively, we derive an algorithm for estimating the missing landmarks based on the pre-shapes. The pre-shape is invariant under the location and scaling of the original configuration with the centroid size of the pre-shape being one. Therefore we expect that we can reduce the amount of total computing time for obtaining the estimate of the missing landmarks.
The main contribution of this research is that it gives:(1) a rational criterion to select the best self-localizing method for a particular situation, and (2) an appropriate arrangement of the landmarks to minimize the error. In this paper, the authors propose a set of indices to evaluate the accuracy of the self-localizing methods, and the indices are derived from a sensitivity which is defined as the ratio of the localizing error to sensor error. And then, we compare the accuracy of self-localizing a mobile robot with landmarks based on the indices, and propose a rational way to minimize the localizing error.
This paper propose a localization method using color landmark that is applicable to mobile intelligent robot. The color landmarks are attached in the indoor ceiling. The world coordinate of robot is estimated by color patterns and the coordinates of landmarks. A landmark is composed of 4color and these 4 colors are sorted in a line. All of landmarks have a main color which indicates direction of robot. Other 3 colors are the combination of 5 kind of colors. The CCD camera is installed on the top of robot to observe the landmarks in the ceiling.
In this paper, we proposed localization method of mobile robot using color landmark mounted on ceiling. This work is composed 2 parts : landmark recognition part which finds the position of multiple landmarks in image and identifies them and absolute position estimation part which estimates the location and orientation of mobile robot in indoor environment. In landmark recognition part, mobile robot detects artificial color landmarks using simple histogram intersection method in rg color space which is insensitive to the change of illumination. Then absolute position estimation part calculates relative position of the mobile robot to the detected landmarks. For the verification of proposed algorithm, ceiling-orientated camera was installed on a mobile robot and performance of localization was examined by designed artificial color landmarks. As the result of test, mobile robot could achieve the reliable landmark detection and accurately estimate the position of mobile robot in indoor environment.
This paper presents a novel localization paradigm for mobile robots based on artificial and natural landmarks. A model-based object recognition method detects natural landmarks and conducts the global and topological localization. In addition, a metric localization method using artificial landmarks is fused to complement the deficiency of topology map and guide to action behavior. The recognition algorithm uses a modified local Zernike moments and a probabilistic voting method for the robust detection of objects in cluttered indoor environments. An artificial landmark is designed to have a three-dimensional multi-colored structure and the projection distortion of the structure encodes the distance and viewing direction of the robot. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system through real world experiments using a mobile robot, KASIRI-III.
To achieve autonomous mobile robot navigation, accurate localization technique is the fundamental issue that should be addressed. In augmented reality, the position of a user is required for location-based services. This paper presents indoor localization using infrared reflective artificial landmarks. In order to minimize the disturbance to the user and to provide the ease of installation, the passive landmarks are used. The landmarks are made of coated film which reflects the infrared light efficiently. Infrared light is not visible, but the camera can capture the reflected infrared light. Once the artificial landmark is identified, the camera's relative position/orientation is estimated with respect to the landmark. In order to reduce the number of the required artificial landmarks for a given environment, the pan/tilt mechanism is developed together with the distortion correction algorithm.
It is very important to arrange landmarks when a mobile robot needs to measure its own location. So, it has been discussed often how to arrange landmarks in the optimal way until now. We, there, chose the RFID (Radio frequency Identification) tags as landmarks which can be observed by a mobile robot, and demonstrated the possibility of the optimal arrangement of them. For this work first, we defined the optimization problem and its parameters for the arrangement of tags. Second, we proposed the algorithm which can be applied to the optimization problem. Finally we could obtain closely optimal and practical arrangement with the minimum number of landmarks which satisfied the necessary condition by experimentation.
