Jeongsun limestone formations with good geochemical solution of limestone and physical environments have been developing many Karst landforms. Especially, there are many dolines and most of them elliptical shapes of planes. At present, they have been transformed into uvala toward their long diameter directions. The period of landscape processing is a Quaternary Epoch and Karst cycle corresponds to a stage from late maturity to old stage.
Drawing on its extensive experience with natural disasters, Japan has been dispatching Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) team to disaster-stricken countries to provide specialist assistance in rescue and medical operations. The JDR team has assisted in the wake of disasters including the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China. Information about the affected area is essential for a rapid disaster response. However, it can be difficult to gather information on damages in the immediate post-disaster period. To help overcome this problem, we have built on an Earthquake Damage Estimation System. This system makes it possible to produce distributions of the earthquake's seismic intensity and structural damage based on pre-calculated data such as landform and site amplification factors for Peak Ground Velocity, which are estimated from a Digital Elevation Model, as well as population distribution. The estimation result can be shared with the JDR team and with other international organizations through communications satellite or the Internet, enabling more effective rapid relief operations.
High school textbooks of world geography show geomorphic featuresin arid environments such as sand dune, yardang and ventifact which are largely created by aeolian processes. Desert pavements, ubiquitous armored surfaces composed of a mosaic of clasts in hot and arid regions, are introduced as a major landform which can be attributed to wind erosion. However, they are formed by a variety of processes including deflation, surface runoff, upward clast migration and dust accretion that cause coarse particles concentration at the surface. The deflation by wind leaving a lag of coarse clasts has been solely regarded at home, even though the classical mechanism of deflation has been evaluated as a relatively unimportant process of pavement formation abroad through empiricalstudies. The accretionary model is gaining wider acceptance, thus implying that desert pavements could be formed through deposition of aeolian material. In addition, sheetflood and upward migration of clasts, irrelevant to the aeolian processes, could also create stone pavements. As a consequence, the deflation process in high school textbooks has to be urgently modified into a range of processes including aeolian mantling. By stressing that desert pavements are an exceptional geomorphic feature in deserts where wind is a predominant geomorphic agent, they can be used as a good example to demonstrate that a landform is not monogenetic.
This study aims to analyze geomorphologically Jaein Falls in Hantangang Lava Plateau for the landform structure, landform classification, falls dissection and recession. The height and recession length of the Falls are approximately 18m and 340m. after dissection valley arrive at area of the Jijangbong Volcanic Rock Complex of Mesozoic era, the fall will disappear. The structure of the dissection valley shows totally well vertical columnar joint near falls and plunge pool, colluvial talus deposits toward lower reach by the freezing-thawing and wet-dry activities, and alluvial cone and delta in estuary to Hantangang River. The Falls' age date and recession rate in the valley maybe relate to the age of the lava plateau. The estimated recession rate of the fall should be 8.75m/ka to 2.3m/ka, depending on the age 500ka to 40ka in lava plateau.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the location characteristics in which 'large Jar coffin' (hereinafter referred to as 'Jar coffin') distributed in the Yeongsan river basin area in Jeonnam province by means of topographic analysis. 75 Jar coffins (74.3%) in 19 relics (90.5% of total) were found in hill and 26 Jar coffins (25.7%) of two consumption relics (9.5%) were found in floodplain. Among them, 34 (45.3% of total) and 41 (54.7% of total) Jar coffins were found in the Crest surface and Sideslope of hills, respectively. In particular, 26 (34.7%) Jar coffins are mostly located in the Crest flat. This result implies that people at that might be consider the river inundation, and mostly choose hill rather than floodplain when building the Jar coffin. therefore amongtherefore among micro-landform units of the hill, it seems that the 'Crest flat' was the preferred place for the building the Jar coffin at that time.
The purpose of this study is as follows: First, we restore the optimal topographical environment of the Bronze Age settlements in the Yongdu Stream and its surrounding area in Asan City. Second, we reveal the relative importance of the topographical factors that the Bronze Age people considered when selecting their dwelling locations. We compared and analyzed topographical factors (ridge scale, ridge direction, slope direction of the ridge, micro-landform of the ridge, position of the ridge) from the ridge's environmental perspective of 123 Bronze Age dwellings (hereinafter referred to as dwellings) found in the survey area for that purpose. The results are as follows: First, from a macro perspective, the optimal topographical environment for the location of the Bronze Age settlement is the second ridge that have the E-W direction. And from a micro perspective, it is the southeast direction slope of the Crest slope at the summit. Second, it appears that the Bronze Age people have taken important consideration in determining the location of their dwelling in the following order: ① position (eg. summit), ② micro-landform (eg. Crest slope, Upper slope), ③ slope direction (eg. southward, South, Southeast), ④ scale (eg. sub-ridge, secondary, tertiary), ⑤ direction (eg. E-W, NNE-SSE).
Geomorphological development and distribution at the macro scale provide a clue to the geotectonic characteristics that have affected the geomorphological system. This is because the developmental characteristics and distribution of the landform at the macro scale remain spatial characteristics due to tectonic processes, such as fault activity. From the perspective of tectonic geomorphology, this study identified the developmental characteristics and distribution of the Quaternary landforms in central-southern Yangsan fault and discussed its relevance to fault activity. In this paper, we presented examples and results of morphotectonic analysis of the Yangsan fault, and will present the results of age dating, stratigraphic relationship of the Quaternary landforms, and calculation of cumulative slip rate in the next paper.
