Development of Cartographic Models for the Resolution of Conflicting Land Use (토지이용의 상충성 해결을 위한 지도학적 모델의 개발)

  • Geo-spatial information system technology and cartographic modeling techniques were used as a way to Improve the land use planning process. Off-road vehicle(ORV) trails, timber harvest sites, timber haul mads and wildlife ruffed grouse habitats areas should be allocated together in the Wayne National Forest in the United States. Automated spatial cartographic models were developed to resolve the conflicts of the multiple land use allocation. The techniques of descriptive and prescriptive modeling made the multiple land use allocation efficient and effective.

A Study on the way to improve the rear van's durability of Korean Light Tactical Vehicle (한국형 전술차량 후방밴 강성·강도 보강을 통한 내구성 향상에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to improve the FRP Van's durability by analyzing the problematic parameters, redesigning the rear van, and verifying the design drafts using the CAE analysis & Rig test. Methods: The collected data through the government quality inspection and field spot check were thoroughly analyzed through the characteristics diagram and the improvement suggestions were verified by performing CAE analysis, like the dynamic stiffness, Torsional stiffness, open/close condition's strength, Full car durability and Carrying out the actual test. Results: The results of this study are as follows; The output of CAE analysis shows that improvement suggestions have considerable effects on the reinforcement of FRP structure, and the actual torsion and open/close condition durability test prove that rear van may have durable life which is equivalent to vehicle life cycle. Conclusion: The structural weakness of KLTV's FRP rear van was overcome by applying the stiffener in rear van and changing the bonding method of each FRP pieces. That suggestions were proved using CAE analysis and Rig test.

A Study on Optimization of Noise Reduction of Auxiliary Power Unit for Military Tracked Vehicle (군용 궤도장비 보조동력장치의 소음저감 최적화 연구)

  • Noise reduction is an important issue in auxiliary power unit(APU) of tracking equipments for using military. In this study, we designed and tested reduction methods of structure borne noise and airborne source noise at the auxiliary power unit. From the bench test results, it is found that the effect of noise reduction is about 22 dB(A) if the silencer is redesigned, which is the rescue structure. However, the influence of noise reduction by air is insufficient. In addition, it is confirmed that the effect of noise reduction is excellent when structure borne noise reduction is applied to the vehicle. We expected that the test results of this study are used as basic data to reduce the noise of other tracking equipment developed later.

A Study on the Improvement of Brake Judder in Korean Light Tactical Vehicles (한국형 전술차량 제동 시 차체 떨림 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Brake judder has been identified in some operating military units of Korean Light Tactical Vehicles(KLTV) with In-board brake systems to improve braking performance. Severe vibration generated while driving the vehicle may reduce the KLTV's driving stability and further lead to accidents. For the prevention of this, this study analyzes the root cause through the failure analysis on the vehicles with the brake judder identified. Furthermore, the improvement factor was derived by identifying a vibration transmission path by analyzing the vibration transmission mechanism. The study analysis confirmed that the vibration of the frame during braking in the tactical vehicle is a cold judder phenomenon, which is caused by an increase in disk thickness variation due to rust and foreign substances under excessive brake disc's run-out. In addition, it was confirmed that such vibration can be reduced by improving the mounting structure. So, an improvement method for each factor was suggested and its effectiveness was verified by comparison test. Finally, it is expected that the improvement plans derived through this study can be used in the development of a next military vehicle.

A Study on Quality Improvement through Analysis of Hub-reduction Failure Occurrence Mechanism for Military Vehicles (군용차량 허브리덕션 고장 메커니즘 분석을 통한 품질개선 연구)

  • For the tactical vehicles operated by the Korean army, the hub-reduction portal axle was applied considering Korea's topographical characteristics. Hub-reduction was applied to a Korean military vehicle to increase the vehicle body to secure ground clearance and improve the driving capability on rough roads, such as unpaved and field land by increasing the torque. The Korean military is operating tactical vehicles after various performance tests, including durability driving, but wheel damage occurred in one of the vehicles operating in the front units. Failure analysis revealed many damaged parts, including the hub, making it difficult to determine the cause. Therefore, an analysis of the failure occurrence mechanism for each damaged part was conducted, which confirmed that the cause of wheel breakage was a hub. Furthermore, the root cause of the hub breakage was a crack due to internal pores and foreign matters. In addition, a realistic improvement plan that can be applied throughout the design, manufacture, and shipping stages was presented using the fishbone diagram analysis. The derived improvement plan was verified through unit performance tests, including CAE and actual vehicle tests, and by reflecting this, the driving safety of Korean tactical vehicles was improved. Finally, it is expected that the proposed method for analyzing the failure occurrence mechanism will be used as reference material when analyzing the quality problems of similar military vehicles in the future.

  • Optimal design of the long tunnels with large cross sections essential for the effective development of the limited land in Korea becomes more and more difficult owing to the constantly changing social, economic, environmental and technological factors. Deficiency of the domestic research works till now on the elementary topics on tunnel ventilation retards progress on developing the key technologies urgently required for designing and managing the long and large tunnels. This paper aims at identifying the subjects on which research must be carried out for the construction and management of vehicle tunnels in Korea by means of scrutinizing the contents of the publications since 1991 at the International Symposium on Aerodynamic and Ventilation of Vehicle Tunnels, the only international conference on the tunnel ventilation.

  • Recently, so as to solve the urban transportation problem the LRT(Light Rail Transit) system has been studied on the essential technology and the engineering know-how, which lead lower construction cost and higher reliability. The localization development of rubber tired AGT(Automatic Guided Trainsit) system has performed from 1999 to 2004, as a national project of the Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. For the application of the rubber tired AGT system in Busan Subway 3-2 Line, this study is focused on the reliability of aluminium profiles vehicle carbody and the establishment of the test and evaluation technologies. In this paper, 3D modeling simulation was applied to the load test of aluminium vehicle carbody. The reliability of the vehicle carbody was estimated as the fatigue test of welded aluminium profiles. From the test and simulation results, it could be concluded that the developed rubber tired AGT shows a good structural reliability and integrity.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to propose a sensor fusion algorithm that integrates vehicle motion sensor(VMS) into the hybrid navigation system. Methods: How to evaluate the navigation performance was comparison test with the hybrid navigation system and the sensor fusion method. Results: The results of this study are as follows. It was found that the effects of the sensor fusion method and α value estimation were significant. Applying these greatly improves the navigation performance. Conclusion: For improving the reliability of navigation system, the sensor fusion method shows that the proposed method improves the navigation performance in a combat vehicle.

Developing a Vehicle Classification Algorithm Based on the Trend Line to Vehicle Lengths and Wheelbases (차량길이와 축거의 추세선을 이용한 차종분류 알고리즘 개발)

  • In order to observe the impact of a type of vehicles for traffic flows and pavement, vehicle classifications is conducted. Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs provides 12-type vehicle classifications on National expressways, National highways, and Provincial roads. Current AVC (Automatic Vehicle Classification) devices decide vehicle types comparing measurements of vehicle lengths, wheelbases, overhangs etc. to a reference table including those of all types of models. This study developed an algorithm for macroscopic vehicle classification which is less sensitive to tuning sensors and updating the reference table. For those characteristics, trend lines in vehicle lengths and wheelbases are employed. To assess the algorithm developed, vehicle lengths and wheelbases were collected from an AVC device. In this experiment, this algorithm showed the accuracy of 88.2 % compared to true values obtained from video replaying. Our efforts in this study are expected to contribute to developing devices for macroscopic vehicle classification.
