  • Growing urban areas modify patterns of local land use and land cover. Land use changes associated with urban expansion. One way to understand and document land use change and urbanization is to establish benchmark maps compiled from satellite imagery. Old satellite Imagery is useful data to extract urban information. CORONA is a photo satellite reconnaissance program used from 1960 to 1972 and its imagery was declassified and has been available to the public since 1995. Since CORONA images are collected with panoramic cameras, several types of geometric distortions are involved. In this study we proposed mathematical modeling method which use modified collinearity equations. After the geometric modeling, we mosaicked images. We can successfully extract urban boundaries using GLCM method and visual interpretation in CORONA (1972) and SPOT (1995) imagery and detect urban changes in Seoul quantitatively.

  • With the revision of the 「State Property Act」, the conditions for using state-owned land have improved. The new government is also suggesting the necessity of using state-owned land to revitalize private investment and secure financial investment capacity. In line with these policy changes, this study examines Japan's policy on the utilization of state-owned land and effective use cases, and seeks to find policy implications from the perspective of managing and promoting the use of state-owned land. The direction of Japan's public land utilization policy is to induce optimal use of state-owned land through efficient management, and to increase the value of state property by promoting active use of state-owned land through linkage of state-owned and public land and private participation, etc. It appears that the policy is being pursued in the direction of suppressing the sale of state-owned land in the country. To promote the effective use of state-owned land, it is necessary to establish a clear policy direction first. In addition, the establishment of a transparent information disclosure system and the establishment of a strong control tower capable of coordinating interests between ministries are required. The starting point of policy establishment for efficient use of state-owned land is to change the perception that the actual owner of state-owned land is the people.

  • A dramatic decline in the abundance of the scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) has been observed across most of its geographic range. In order to evaluate the influence of land cover patterns and their changes on scaled quail abundance, we examined landscape patterns and their changes from the 1970s to the1990s in two large ecoregions with contrasting population trends: (1) the Rolling Plains ecoregion with a significantly decreased scaled quail population and (2) the South Texas Plains ecoregion with a relatively stable scaled quail population. The National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Land Use/Land Cover data were used to quantify landscape patterns and their changes based on 80 randomly located $20{\times}20km^2$ windows in each of the ecoregions. We found that landscapes in the Rolling Plains and the South Texas Plains were considerably different in composition and spatial characteristics related to scaled quail habitats. The landscapes in the South Texas Plains had significantly more shrubland and less grassland-herbaceous rangeland; and except for shrublands, they were more fragmented, with greater interspersion among land cover classes. Correlation analysis between the landscape metrics and the quail-abundance-survey data showed that shrublands appeared to be more important for scaled quail in the South Texas Plains, while grassland-herbaceous rangelands and pasture-croplands were essential to scaled quail habitats in the Rolling Plains. The decrease in the amount of grassland-herbaceous rangeland and spatial aggregation of pasture-croplands has likely contributed to the population decline of scaled quails in the Rolling Plains ecoregion.

  • We analyzed how foraging area use changed in female Pipistrellus abramus during the breeding season. Radio tracking was used to follow 12 female P. abramus in Gyeongju City, from 2013 to 2015. We followed three bats in each of four stages of reproduction: early pregnancy, late pregnancy, lactation, and post-lactation. Our data showed that the usable area of a foraging site and the area that was actually used by bats in that site were different, and foraging site use also differed according to stage of reproduction. The bats used arable land the most, with use rates of 57%, 40.4%, and 73.2% during early pregnancy, late pregnancy, and lactation, respectively. Bats in a post-lactation state did not use arable areas at all and instead foraged over bodies of water 90% of the time. There was no difference in the use of each foraging environment between bats in early pregnancy and late pregnancy. However, bats in late pregnancy and those that were lactating did use arable land to different extents, and bats that were lactating and those that were post-lactation also used arable land and bodies of water to different extents.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the factors affecting the structural changes of agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do and to prospect for its future use. Seven commodity groups are categorized to include all agricultural products: rice, summer food crops, summer vegetables and other cash crops, fruits, barley, winter field vegetables, and winter greenhouse vegetables. We developed a model for acreage distribution among the seven commodity groups, and estimated the economic relations between prices and acreage distribution. The results showed positive relations exist between cultivating acreage and own commodity prices in all commodity groups, whereas competitive relations exist between summer commodity groups or winter commodity groups such that rice price decreases led to increases of fruits cultivating acreage or vice versa and winter vegetable price increases led to increases of winter greenhouse vegetables cultivating acreage or vice versa. Further, acreage elasticities with respect to own commodity prices or farm wage rates are estimated over the last 30 years, and future agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do is prospected based on three different scenarios. Total agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do will be decreased over the next 10 years from 159,000 ha in year 2010 to 143,000~153,000 ha in year 2020. By commodity group, cultivating acreage of rice, summer food crops, and barley will be decreased while cultivating acreage of summer vegetables, fruits, winter field vegetables, and winter greenhouse vegetables will be stagnant.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate tendencies on land use in the housing site development district by grasping the characteristics of changes of building use at the borders of single-detached housing area for planning single-detached housing area in the future. It is divided the borders of detached housing areas into three types, educational facility, parks and green spaces, and apartment complex, and then analyzed the characteristics of each location after a field study. It is summarized as follows. First, there were stationery and flour-based meal stores in adjacent borders near educational facilities, suitable for students' interest and motion patterns, and it is required to consider about frequent children's action in the street. Second, there are many facilities for park users and residents, such as educational institutes and restaurants in adjacent to borders near parks. In borders neighboring buffer green belt areas, warehouses and vacant sites were mainly distributed. And the revitalization of streets was lower than others, because a road was used as a parking space. Third, there were realty dealers, food stores, and laundries which provide the dwellers with service in adjacent borders near multi-family housing.

  • The NRCS curve number (CN) method has been widely adopted in practice to synthesize runoff hydrographs from small watersheds with complex land use. It may not be valid to apply this model for irrigated paddies, since hydrological characteristics of irrigated rice paddies are not sufficiently considered in CN method. This paper attempts to extend the capability of the well-known SCS TR-20 model to local conditions by formulating a submodel for the runoff-processes in paddies. The modified model was tested with field data from the Baran watershed. The results were in good agreement with field data. It was also applicable to simulate runoff changes resulting from land use changes within the watershed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes of time series, the use by farm type and the causes of farm household debt. First, the mid and long term changes in farm household debt over the past 50 years have increased. Since 2010, the share of non-agricultural debt has exceeded the share of agricultural debt. Second, as a result of the analysis of the farm household debt use by farm type - full time&part time, farming type, land size, age, family members - there was a difference between the agricultural and the non-agricultural debt according to the type of farm household in a significant level of 1%. Finally, as a result of the cause analysis of the farm household debt, the related non-agricultural expenditure variables and the dummy variable of the manager's age, family member and land size has a common influence on the farm household debt increase.

  • The main purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of urbanization on the groundwater system in the Gap river basin, a sub-basin of the Geum river basin. In this analysis, we constructed a water cycle analysis system using SWAT. Then, changes in soil moisture and recharge rate due to land-use changes were investigated using different land-use data estimated in 1975 and 2000. Simulation results were analyzed for both draught (2001) and flood (2003) years to take into account different hydrologic conditions. It was shown that recharge rate in the most urbanized area (31% change) was reduced by 17% for both periods due to urbanization. The results also indicated that soil moisture decrease due to urbanization was more sensitive in the drought year (2001) than in the flood year (2003), We expect that the results of this research can contribute to providing useful information for managing urban rivers considering river restoration and flood control.

  • This study deals with the geomorphic, environmental and land use changes by comparative analysis using Landsat TM images of 1988 year and ETM ones of 2002 year, partly together with the new Quick Bird images having 60cm resolution for more detail analysis, focusing on the Oncheon gun(county) in Pyeongnam Province, west coast zone of North Korea. The main analysis methodology is neural network classification, which is more advanced techniques for the classification of land cover and land use, with higher accuracy rate and lower errors. The TM images of 1988 year show, mainly, the on-construction tide embank for the reclamation at Gwangryangman bay and salt farm on the reclaimed tidal flat. But, ETM images of 2002 year present stabilized reclaimed land, salt farm and rice field, recently transformed from salt farm. Especially, new tidal land has been naturally developed on the coastal shallow out of tide embank and salt farm. The results of the study may help to database coastal environmental changes and to support for reasonable and productive land use of North Korea, and to manage and plan unified national land in the near future.
