In the previous studies, the authors proposed the use of laminated veneer lumber - carbon fiber reinforced polymer (LVL-CFRP) composite beams for structural application. Bond strength of the LVL-to-CFRP interface and flexural strengthening schemes to increase the bending capacity subjected to positive and negative moment were discussed in the previous works. In this article, theoretical models are proposed to predict the moment capacity when the LVL-CFRP beams are subjected to negative moment. Two common failure modes - CFRP fracture and debonding of CFRP are considered. The non-linear model proposed for positive moment is modified for negative moment to determine the section moment capacity. For the debonding based failure, previously developed bond strength model for CFRP-to-LVL interface is implemented. The theoretical models are validated against the experimental results and then use to determine the moment-rotation behaviour and rotational rigidity to compare the efficacy of various strengthening techniques. It is found that combined use of bi- and uni-directional CFRP U-wrap at the joint performs well in terms of both moment capacity and rotational rigidity.

In this work, the effect of composite couplings on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor blade is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear, torsional warping are considered in the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton's principle. The blade response and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated by quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap $({\delta}3)$ or $pitch-lag({\alpha}1)$ coupling. It is found that the elastic couplings have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_b/rev$ hub loads. Nearly 10 to 40% of hub loads is reduced by appropriately tailoring the fiber orientation angles in the laminae of the composite blade.
Fatigue damage detection and vibration sensing for a laminated composites and impact location detection for a steel beam have been carried out using optical fiber sensor. Intensity based optical fiber sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end in a hollow glass tube, and multiple reflection within the cavity is considered. Fatigue signals are measured by embedded optical fiber, surface mounted optical fiber sensor and strain gage simultaneously. For vibration sensing, optical fiber sensor is mounted on the carbon fiber composite beam and its response to free vibration and forced vibration is investigated. In impact location detection, two optical fiber sensors are used and the information obtained from two sensors is arrival time delay of vibration caused by impact. Impact location can be calculated from this time delay. The obtained results show that the intensity based optical fiber sensor provide reliable data during long-term fatigue loading, unlike strain gage which deteriorate during the early part of the fatigue test. Optical fiber sensor signals coincide with gap sensor in vibration sensing. The precise locations of impact can be detected within 4.1% error limit.
In this study, the effects of ring stiffeners for buckling of cylindrical shells with composite materials were analyzed. The finite element method was used: 3-D beam elements were used for stiffeners and flat shell elements were used for cylindrical shells and were improved by introducing a substitute shear strain. The ring stiffeners were of the transverse rib type. The buckling behaviors of the cylindrical shells were analyzed based on various parameters, such as locations and sizes of stiffeners, diameter/length ratios and boundary conditions of shells, and fiber-reinforced angles. Effective reinforcement was examined by understanding the exact behaviors for buckling. The results of the analysis may serve as references for designs and future investigations.

Compton X-ray backscatter technique has been used to quantitatively assess the impact damage in quasi-isotropic laminated composites and to obtain a cross-sectional profile of impact-damaged laminated composites from the density variation of the cross section. An adaptive filter is applied to the Compton backscattering data for the reconstruction and noise reduction from many sources including quantum noise, especially when the SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) of the image is relatively low. A nonlinear reconstruction model is also proposed to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter image due to attenuation effects, beam hardening, and irregular distributions of the fibers and the matrix in composites. Delaminations masked or distorted by the first few delaminations near the front surface are detected and characterized both in width and location, by application of an error minimization algorithm.

The fiber metal laminate is a type of hybrid materials laminated thin metallic sheets with fiber reinforced plastic sheets. The laminate has been researched or applied in automotive and aerospace industries due to their outstanding impact absorbing performance in view of light weight aspect. Specially, the replacement of side-impact beam as the fiber reinforced plastic has been researched actively. The objective of this paper is the primitive investigation in the development of side-door impact beam using the fiber metal laminate. First, the three-point bending simulations were conducted to decide the shape of impact beam using the numerical analysis. Next, two cases impact beam (pure DP 980 and fiber metal laminate) were installed in the side-door, and then the bending tests (according to FMVSS 214S) were simulated using the numerical analysis. It is noted that the side-door impact beam can be replaced with the fiber metal laminate sufficiently based on the numerical analysis results.
A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross-sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by D. H. Kim in 1974. This method has been developed for two-dimensional problems including the laminated composite plates and was proved to be very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the building slabs with passive and active control devices is presented. Finite difference method is used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

This paper introduces a new hybrid structural connection joint that combines shear walls with section steel beams, fundamentally resolving the construction complexity issue of requiring pre-embedded connectors in the connection between shear walls and steel beams. Initially, a quasi-static loading scheme with load-deformation dual control was employed to conduct low-cycle repeated loading experiments on five new connection joints. Data was acquired using displacement and strain gauges to compare the energy dissipation coefficients of each specimen. The destruction process of the new connection joints was meticulously observed and recorded, delineating it into three stages. Hysteresis curves and skeleton curves of the joint specimens were plotted based on experimental results, summarizing the energy dissipation performance of the joints. It's noteworthy that the addition of shear walls led to an approximate 17% increase in the energy dissipation coefficient. The energy dissipation coefficients of dog-bone-shaped connection joints with shear walls and cover plates reached 2.043 and 2.059, respectively, exhibiting the most comprehensive hysteresis curves. Additionally, the impact of laminated steel plates covering composite concrete floors on the stiffness of semi-rigid joint ends under excessive stretching should not be disregarded. A comparison with finite element analysis results yielded an error of merely 2.2%, offering substantial evidence for the wide-ranging application prospects of this innovative joint in seismic performance.
An understanding of the failure mechanisms of the adhesive layer is decisive in interpreting the performance of a particular adhesive joint because the delamination is one of the most common failure modes of the laminated composites such as the fiber metal laminates. The interface between different materials, which is the case between the metal and the composite layers in this study, can be loaded through a combination of fracture modes. All loads can be decomposed into peel stresses, perpendicular to the interface, and two in-plane shear stresses, leading to three basic fracture mode I, II and III. To determine the load causing the delamination growth, the energy release rate should be identified in corresponding criterion involving the critical energy release rate ($G_C$) of the material. The critical energy release rate based on these three modes will be $G_{IC}$, $G_{IIC}$ and $G_{IIIC}$. In this study, to evaluate the fracture behaviors in the fracture mode I and II of the adhesive layer in fiber metal laminates, the double cantilever beam and the end-notched flexure tests were performed using the reference adhesive joints. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the experimental results of the adhesive fracture toughness can be applied by the comparison with the finite element analysis using cohesive zone model.
The RFI process is an OoA process that fiber mats and resin films are laminated and cured in a vacuum bag. In case that resin film is insufficient to fill empty space in fibers, it makes void defect in composites and this void decrease mechanical properties of the composites. For this reason, non-destructive testing is usually used to evaluate void of manufactured composites. So, in this study, a manufacturing method of standard void specimens, which are able to be used as references in non-destructive testing, was proposed by controlling resin film thickness in the RFI process. Also, a fiber compaction test was proposed as a method to set the resin film thicknesses depending on target voids of manufacturing panels. The target void panels of 0%, 2%, and 4% were made by the proposed methods, and signal attenuation depending on void was measured by non-destructive testing and image analysis. In addition, voids of specimens for tensile, in-plane, short beam and compressive tests were estimated by signal attenuation, and mechanical properties were evaluated depending on the voids.
