  • This paper presents the prediction of shear strength of oil contaminated clay using fall cone test used to determine the liquid limit of soil. The penetration depth of fall cone is related to water content of soil. Laboratory vane shear can also be related to water content. To explore the relative correlation between penetration depth of fall cone and laboratory vane shear, both fall cone tests and laboratory vane shear test were carried out with water contents of soil. The developed empirical relationships in this studys showed that the shear strength is reduced to 3.9% with 1% increase of oil content. And, the lesser initial water content of contaminated clay, the more shear strength of contaminated clay is affected by oil content.

  • Soil conditioning improves the performance of EPB (earth pressure balance) shield TBMs (tunnel boring machines) by reducing shear strength, enhancing workability of the excavated soil, and supporting the tunnel face during EPB tunnelling. The mechanical and rheological behavior of the excavated muck mixed with additives should be properly evaluated to determine the optimal additive injection condition corresponding to each ground type. In this study, the laboratory pressurized vane test apparatus equipped with a vane-shaped rheometer was developed to reproduce the pressurized condition in the TBM chamber and quantitively evaluate rheological properties of the soil specimens. A series of the pressurized vane tests were performed for an artificial sand soil by changing foam injection ratio (FIR) and polymer injection ratio (PIR), which are the injection parameters of the foam and the polymer, respectively. In addition, the workability of the conditioned soil was evaluated through the slump test. The peak and yield stresses of the conditioned soil with respect to the injection parameters were evaluated through the rheogram, which was derived from the measured torque data in the pressurized vane test. As FIR increased or PIR decreased, the workability of the conditioned soil increased, and the maximum torque, peak stress, and yield stress decreased. The peak stress and yield stress of the specimen from the laboratory pressurized vane test correspond to the workability evaluated by the slump tests, which implies the applicability of the proposed test for evaluating the rheological properties of excavated soil.

  • The index properties of cohesive soils play an important role to examine entire tendency of soil properties. Especially, the Atterberg limits have a good correlation with compression and shear strength of cohesive soils. However, these values strongly depend on their testing methods. In this study, for Pusan clays the Atterberg limits were peformed under different conditions; for example, four kinds of specimen preparation, two kinds of testing equipment, and four kinds of estimating method. And a laboratory vane test was peformed to compare the undrained shear strength with that of the fall cone test. As experimental results, the value of liquid limit performed for oven-dried sample, followed in ASTM D4318, underestimated by about 10% compared to those of another three methods, irrespective to the used equipments. But the value of plastic limit was not influenced by sample preparation methods and equipments. The liquid limits by one-point methods(Leroueil et al., 1996; Nagaraj et al., 1981) were agreed well with those of different methods. Finally, the undrained shear strength by laboratory vane test was relatively larger than that of fall cone test, and the relationship between both showed a bad trend.

  • In earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunnelling, the application of soil conditioning which improves properties of the excavated muck by additives injection, is generally used for enhancing the performance of TBM. Therefore it is important to apply the soil conditioning in the numerical model which simulates excavation performance of TBM equipment, but related studies on a method that simulates soil conditioning are insufficient to date. Accordingly, in this study, an laboratory pressurized vane test apparatus was devised to evaluate the characteristics of conditioned soil. Using the apparatus, the vane shear tests were performed on foam-conditioned soil with different shear rates, and the test was numerically simulated with discrete element method (DEM). Finally, the contact properties of particles in DEM were determined by comparing the results of test and analysis, and it indicates that the applicability of pressurized vane test and DEM model for reproducing soil conditioning in TBM excavation model with DEM.

  • Results of in-situ test, laboratory test and strength prediction method for the soft soil underlain by failed road embankment were compared each other. Comparing cone penetration test results with the field vane test results it can be seen that cone factor is 12. Undrained shear strengths determined from the cone factor which was predicted by prediction equation were smaller than those obtained from field vane tests. Among the prediction methods Jamiolkowsky's method gave close strengths to the measured undrained shear strengths by field vane tests and strength ratio were 0.88~1.23.

  • A comparative study of 134 mechanical (Dutch cone) and 9. electronic cone (Piezocone) penetration data from the southern part of Korea has been performed. In general, Dutch cone results may be different from piezocone results due to the difference in structure of the cones. Cone penetrometer test data were analyzed and plotted in soil classification chart proposed by Robertson et. al.(1986,1990) Cone factors of Dutch cone and piezocone test have empirically been determined using laboratory and field vane test results. Using this cone factors, it was shown that there was good correlation between shear strength estimated using cone resistance and that of laboratory test and field vane tests. It was found that there was a good correlation between cone resistance from Dutch cone and that from piezocone. Dutch cone test provides a useful means for stratigraphic profiling in large project and has some advantage over piezocone in particular situations, such as very soft clay ground and dredged area.

  • Undrained shear strength is estimated from laboratory tests generally, but the very soft or fluid material is generally incompatible with the test setup. In-situ methods require test to be accomplished at discrete time intervals, which does not provide a method to predict strength increment as a function of time for an ongoing project. Therefore, correlation between slump test value and undrained shear strength was derived through the regression analysis of slump test and laboratory vane shear test results. For the reliability of derived correlation equation statistical analysis using the t-distribution was performed and the comparison between the results of in-situ test and laboratory experiments demonstrated the applicability of the derived correlation.

  • 134 Dutch cone (mechanical cone) and 9 piezocone (electronic cone) penetration tests have been performed in the southwestern part of Korea. In general, Dutch cone results may be different from that of piezocone due to the difference in structure of the cones. 6 Dutch cone and piezocone test data which were obtained at the same point respectively, were analyzed and plotted in soil classification chart proposed by Robertson et. al.(1986, 1990). Cone factors of Dutch cone and piezocone test empirically have been determined using laboratory and field vane test results. Using this cone factors, it was shown that there was good correlation between shear strength estimated using cone resistance and that of laboratory test and field vane tests. It was found that there was a good correlation between cone resistance from Dutch cone and that from piezocone. Relationship formula was also suggested. Dutch cone test provides a useful means for stratigraphic profiling in large project and has some advantage over piezocone in particular situations, such as very soft clay ground and dredged area.

  • In this paper, a rolling piston rotary compressor having a combined vane and roller unit has been introduced. In a conventional rotary compressor, sliding motion takes place between the vane nose and roller. By combining the vane and the roller in one unit, gas leakage through a clearance between the vane nose and the roller can be eliminated, and the frictional loss between them can also be reduced to almost nought. Compressor model with the combined vane and roller has been fabricated and tested in a compressor calorimeter and computer simulation program has been developed to confirm merits of the new mechanism. In a test, cooling capacity has been found to be increased by 1.4%, and the compressor input decreased by 0.3%, resulting in 1.7% increased in EER. Simulation program confirmed the calorimeter test results and the merits of the new model as mentioned above.

  • Using the results from laboratory soil test, field vane test and piezocone penetration test, the engineering characteristics of the soft ground at east side of Gwangyang Port, which is located at south coast of Jeollanam-do, were investigated and optimal piezocone penetration test depth was derived to calculate piezocone factor. In this paper, the results of 61 laboratory soil tests, 226 times of field vane tests and 26 piezocone penetration tests were used. The result of laboratory soil test suggested that some physical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, liquid limit and plastic index and others are higher than other south coast regions, meanwhile uniaxial compression strength, undrained shear strength, defined as mechanical property, appeared to be relatively small, distributed widely. According to the plastic chart, the ground was classified as high compressibility clay and low compressibility clay, mostly represent to Type 3 clay by Robertson (1990)'s classification chart. Piezocone factor was calculated by empirical method, based on the undrained shear strength which was obtained by the field vane test. According to the analysis with 3 different depth range, to set the appropriate measured depth range of piezocone penetration for comparation, using average value of the range of 5 times the vane length showed the highest correlation.
