The effect of the foliar application of amino acid mixture on the growth of melon (Cucumis melo L.) seedlings was investigated. The amino acid treatments were initiated at the first (Ll) or second (L2) fully expanded leaf stage. The concentrations of amino acid mixture used were 0,10, 20, and 30 mg . L$^{-1}$ . At Ll stage, the fresh and dry weights of shoot were high in the amino acid treatments. Plant height was the highest in 30 mg . L$^{-1}$ at the third sampling of Ll. At L2 stage, shoot fresh weight was the greatest when the concentration of amino acid mixture was 30 mg.L$^{-1}$ at the third sampling. Plant height was the highest in 30 mg L$^{-1}$ at the second and third samplings. At the third sampling of Ll stage the amino acid mixture affected leaf length and leaf width of the first true leaf. At the third sampling of L2 stage leaf length was not significantly dirtferent between treatments, while leaf width was greater in amino acid treatments. At the second and third samplings of Ll stage the amino acid mixture had effect on leaf length and leaf width of the second true leafs which were not significantly different between treatments at L2 stage. Leaf length and leaf width of the third true leaf were affected by amino acid treatments. In conclusion, when the first true leaf expanded\ulcorner three foliar applications of 20-30 mg . L$^{-1}$ amino acid mixture can stimulate the growth of melon seedlings. If the amino acid mixture is sprayed at the second true leaf stage, two foliar applications of 30 mg . L$^{-1}$ amino acid mixture can improve the growth of melon seedlings.
The experiments were carried out to improve culture efficiency of rhizome and mericlone propagation through settlement of problems occurring during culture period of temperate Cymbidium species. Shooting efficiency from rhizome of C. forrestii 'Nokwoon' was improved, when cultured in $H_3P_4$ medium (Hyponex 3+peptone 4g/L) supplemented with 170mg/L $NaH_2PO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ and 0.4mg/L Thiamin e HCl, but the other varieties were not influenced to shooting efficiency by additives. Medium in which rhizome of C. nishiuchianum 'Hodukjiwha' was cultured became less browned in $H_3P_4$ medium added with 150mg/L PVP, but the other treatments of antioxidants was failed to prevent the medium browning. Re-formation of rhizome from young shoots of C. forrestii 'Sojub', 5.5cm in length occured in $H_3P_4$ enriched with 2.0 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA under darkness, but axillary buds were elongated in the medium with 1.0 mg/L NAA and 3.0 mg/L BA under light condition. On the other hand, rhizomes from young shoot of C. forrestii 'Seosinmae' and 'Songmae', 5.5cm and 2.5cm in length respectively were reformed in 2.0 mg/L NAA and 5.0mg/L kinetin under darkness, but multishoot from young shoot were emerged in 2.0mg/L NAA and 3.0mg/L BA.
In making liquid yoghurt, the influences of proteolytic ability of lactic acid bacteria on acid production and on protein stability were investigated. L. bulgaricus CH-2, L. helviticus IAM 1042 and L. jugurti 3048 showed a comparatively high proteolytic activity in milk, while L. casei YIT 9018 did not show any marked proteolysis. Starter organisms having high proteolytic ability showed more rapid growth and acid production than those having low ability in milk. The most active proteolysis occurred during logarithmic growth phase of yogurt organisms, and most of the proteolysis took place in the first 24-48 hrs of incubation. Highly proteolysed yogurts made by L. bulgaricus CH-2, L. jugurti 3048, L. helviticus IAM 1042, L. acidophilus L-54 and L. casei 3012 had low protein solubility at pH 3.5 and had much protein precipitates during storage of product, but those having little protein hydrolysates made by L. casei YIT 9018 or artificial acidification showed no precipitation during keeping.
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of phosphorus deficiency on nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis of nitrogen fixing soybean plant under $CO_2$ enrichment condition. The soybean plants(Glycine max [L.] Merr.) inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum MN 110 were grown with P-stressed(0.05 mM-P) and control(1 mM-P) treatment under control$(400\;{\mu}l/L\;CO_2)$ and enrichment$(800\;{\mu}l/L\;CO_2)$ enviromental condition in the phytotron equipped with high density lamp$(1000\;{\mu}Em^{-2}S^{-1})$ and $28/22^{\circ}C$ temperature cycle for 35 days after transplanting(DAT). At 35 DAT, phosphorus deficiency decreased total dry mass by 64% in $CO_2$ enrichment condition, and 51% in control $CO_2$ condition. Total leaf area was reduced significantly by phosphorus deficiency in control and enriched $CO_2$ condition but specific leaf weight was increased by P deficiency. Phosphorus deficiency significantly reduced photosynthetic rate(carbon exchange rate) and internal $CO_2$ concentration in leaf in both $CO_2$ treatments, but the degree of stress was more severe under $CO_2$ enrichment condition than under control $CO_2$ environmental condition. In phosphorus sufficient plants, $CO_2$ enrichment increased nodule fresh weight and total nitrogenase activity(acetylene reduction) of nodule by 30% and 41% respectively, but specific nitrogenase activity of nodule and nodule fresh weight was not affected by $CO_2$ enrichment in phosphorus deficient plant at 35 DAT. Total nitrogen concentrations in stem, root and nodule tissue were significantly higher in phosphorus sufficient plant grown under $CO_2$ enrichment, but nitrogen concentration in leaf was reduced by 30% under $CO_2$ enrichment. These results indicate that increasing $CO_2$ concentration does not affect plant growth under phosphorus deficient condition and phosphorus stress might inhibit carbohydrate utilization in whole plant and that $CO_2$ enrichment could not increase nodule formation and functioning under phosphorus deficient conditions and phosphorus has more important roles in nodule growth and functioning under $CO_2$ enrichment environments than under ambient condition.

Two different groups (30 and 60 inds.) of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were abruptly (within 30 min) exposed to hypo-salinities from seawater (SW, 35$\textperthousand$) to freshwater (FW, 0$\textperthousand$) (30FW and 60FW) and to 35$\textperthousand$ (30SW and 60SW) in a flow through seawater culture systems. Analysis of plasma samples showed the following significant increase at 0$\textperthousand$: cortisol from $2.8\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ to $66.9\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ (30FW) and from $2.7\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ to $314.1\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ (60FW) after 24 hours of exposure; glucose from $15.8\;mg\;dL^{-1}$ to $257.7\;mg\;dL^{-1}$ after 3 hours exposure and to $164.0\;mg\;dL^{-1}$ after 24 hours in 60FW. Plasma $Na^+$ concentration of 30FW and 60FW were decreased until 24 hours after expose. However that in 30SW and 60SW showed no significant differences. Plasma $Cl^-$ concentration of 60FW was decreased from $59.0\;mEq\;L^{-1}$ to $43.5\;mEq\;L^{-1}$ and to $30.0\;mEq\;L^{-1}$ after 3 and 24 hours of exposure, respectively. At all experimental groups, survival were 100% until 24 hours.
The plant height and internodal length of Mentha piperita, Origanum vulgare L., and Thymus vulgaris L. were reduced according to the treatment of 500, 2,500, 5,000 mg/L B-9 and 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 mg/L uniconazole. On the efficiency of dwarfing in 3 herb species, uniconazole was more effective than B-9, but plant height of Thymus vulgaris was more shortened with 2,500mg/L B-9 treatment than 3 levels of uniconazole treatments. Cuttings from 3 kinds of herbs tested were died with 5,000mg/L B-9 treatment. The number of lateral shoots per plant was heighest at control plants and uniconazole was more effective in reducing lateral shoots than B-9. There was no significant difference in leaf growth between B-9. There was no significant difference in leaf growth between B-9 and uniconazole treatments. The root growth of Mentha poperita, Origanum vulare, and Thymus vulagris was not significantly affected by B-9 or uniconazole.
The results about the myocardial protection of recta of the nitric oxide precursor L-arginine upon reperrusion injury after ischemia are diverse. These diversities may be model dependent. Experiments were designed and performed to investigate myocardial protection effects according to the concentration of L-arginine. The Isolated rat hearts were subjected in a 30 minutes oi normothermic ischemia and reperfused for 30 minutes with reperfusate containing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 moil L-arginine. After 30 minutes of reperfusion, group with 1 and 2 mM/L L-arginine showed a trend of better recovery in left ventricular systolic function(left ventricular developed pressure, positive maximum dpfdt), diastolic function(negative maximum dpfdt) and coronary flow compared to control group(reperfusate no L-arginine). Recovery was impaired with a higher concentration, and at 4 moil L-arginine r covery was worse than control(p (0, 05). These results suggest that optimal concentration of L-arginine Is Important or the recovery of myocardial and endothelial function after ischemia and reperfusion.

In this study, the antioxidative effects, inhibitory effects on elastase, and components of Quercus glauca extracts were investigated. The free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity $(FSC_{50})$ of extract I fractions of Quercus glauca leaf was in the order: 50% ethanol extract $(12.45{\mu}g/mL)$ < ethyl acetate fraction $(10.47{\mu}g/mL)$ < deglycosylated flavonoid aglycone fraction $(8.57{\mu}g/mL)$. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities $(OSC_{50})$ of some Quercus glauca leaf extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The order of ROS scavenging activity was 50% ethanol extract $(OSC_{50},\;4.2{\mu}g/mL)$ < deglycosylated flavonoid aglycone fraction $(1.58{\mu}ug/mL)$ < ethyl acetate fraction $(0.66{\mu}g/mL)$. Ethyl acetate fraction showed the most prominent scavenging activity. The protective effects of extract / fractions of Quercus glauca leaf on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The Quercus glauca leaf extracts suppressed photohemolysis in a dose dependent manner, particularly deglycosylated flavonoid aglycone fraction exhibited the most prominent celluar protective effect $({\tau}_{50}$, 398.67 min at $50{\mu}g/mL$). Aglycone fractions obtained from the deglycosylation reaction of ethyl acetate fraction among the Quercus glauca leaf extracts, showed 2 bands in TLC and 2 peaks in HPLC experiments (360 nm) as well. Two components were identified as quercetin (55.77%), and kaempferol (44.23 %). TLC chromatogram of ethyl acetate fraction of Quercus glauca leaf extracts revealed 6 bands $(QG1{\sim}QG6)$, Among them, isoquercitrin (QG3), hyperin (QG4), and rutin (QG6) were identified. The inhibitory effect of aglycone fraction on tyrosinase $(IC_{50},\;73.5{\mu}g/mL)$ and elastase $(IC_{50},\;16.2{\mu}g/mL)$ was high. These results indicate that extract / fractions of Quercus glauca can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS. And component analysis of Quercus glauca leaf extract and inhibitory activity on tyeisinase and elastase of the aglycone fraction could be applicable to new functional cosmetics.
This study was conducted to establish mass propagation system from the tissue culture using immature embryos in Eleutherococcus senticosus. Immature embryos from seeds were removed under the microscope and placed on MS, $MSB_5\;and\;B_5$ medium containing several plant growth regulators. While the calli were well formed on media containing 2 mg/l of 2, 4-D, 2 mg/l of 2, 4-D and 0.7 mg/l of TDZ, shoot regeneration was better on MS medium with combinations of high concentrations of TDZ and low concentrations of 2, 4-D. Treatment of 2, 4-D alone was better than treatment of TDZ alone in callus induction, but plant regeneration was reversed. The results of callus formation and shoot regeneration on $MSB_5\;and\;B_5$ media were similar to those of MS media. The rate of callus formation was nearly 100% when 2, 4-D was added to $B_5$, medium on concentration of 2 mg/l or 0.7 mg/l. TDZ showed very significant effect on the formation of multiple shoots.

Physiological responses (hematological factors, cortisol, glucose, osmolality, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Cl^-$) in starry flounder Platichthys stellatus were investigated during freshwater acclimation in the conditions of different speeds in salinity change with acute-decrease (AD) or stepwise-decrease (SD I and II). In AD of acute-decrease salinity, hematocrit (Ht), red blood cell (RBC) and hemoglobin (Hb) were rapidly increased more than SD I of stepwise-decrease salinity. But in case of SD II, Ht, RBC and Hb were no significant difference from beginning to end of this experiments. In AD, cortisol level significantly increased from $2.1{\pm}1.0{\mu}g/mL$ at the beginning to $13.7{\pm}0.2{\mu}g/mL$ at 6 hours and recovered to the basal levels ($3.1{\mu}g/mL$) at 10 days. In SD I, cortisol level was significantly increased from $2.1{\pm}1.0{\mu}g/mL$ at the beginning to $13.6{\pm}0.6{\mu}g/mL$ at 6 hours and recovered to the basal levels ($3.1{\pm}0.4{\mu}g/mL$) at 10 days. In SD II, cortisol level was a little increased from $2.1{\pm}1.0{\mu}g/mL$ at the beginning to $10.5{\pm}2.5$, $10.8{\pm}5.6{\mu}g/mL$ at 6, 12 hours and recovered to the basal level at 48 hours. Glucose level of AD, SD I, II were no significant difference from beginning to end of this experiments. Osmolality was $286.8{\pm}3.3\;mOsm/kg$ at the beginning. In SD II of stepwise-decrease, osmolality was no significant difference during rearing in freshwater (FW). But AD of stepwise-decrease and SD I of stepwise-decrease, osmolality was a little decreased end of this experiments. In AD of acute-decrease, only $Cl^-$ level was showed no significant difference from beginning to end of experiment and $Na^+$, $K^+$ levels were decreased. In case of SD I, $Cl^-$ level was showed no significant difference from beginning to end of experiment and $Na^+$, $K^+$ levels were decreased.
