The water status of the leaves of several evergreen plants was investigated in order to discuss the geopgraphical distribution of them. Relastionship between relative water content and water potential of the leaves showed linear decrease for evergreen conifers but exponential decrease for Korean box tree (Buxus microphylla var. koreana). On the basis of the leaf water potential, the water status of the conifers during wintering was distinctly divided into three periods; hardening, cold resistance and dehardening, but lacking in those periods for the Korean box tree, where the status continously decreased. In the cold resistance the leaf water potentials were -23 bar for both spruce (Picea jezoensis) and yew (Taxus cuspidata). From these results and threshold temperature at beginning of hardening, distribution of the conifers was explained that in order of the red pine, the Korean white pine, the yew and the spruce the distribution could be extended at higher altitudes and in more northward areas, whereas the distribution of the Korean box tree was restricted to the lowland of temperate zone.
According to the test of suitability on the acting volume table based upon D.B.H. and Height, the volume by the standing volume table of soft woods produced in Kangwon Province is larger than the true volume and the volume by the standing volume table prepared in form factor 0.45 is smaller than the true volume on the all species obviously. But the volume by the standing volume table of the red pine produced in Kangwon Province and that of Korean white pine prepared in Forest Expriment Station equal to the true volume well.
The adsorption of water vapor and equilibrium moisture content(EMC) of the specimens for four softwood species dried by conventional- and high temperature method and equilibrated to 15% of the target EMC condition at 25$^{\circ}C$ were determined by oven drying method and with moisture meters. The amount of adsorption for high temperature dried red pine was significantly higher than that of conventional kiln dried wood, while those of eastern white pine, eastern hemlock and Norway spruce were not significantly different between drying methods. EMCs of these four species determined by oven drying method and with capacitive admittance moisture meter were not significantly different between drying methods. EMC of high temperature dried red pine determined with resistance moisture meter was significantly higher than that of conventional kiln dried wood. But EMCs of other species did not show significant difference between drying methods. EMCs of conventional and high-temperature dried wood determined with electronic moisture meters, especially in the case of the capacitive-admittance moisture meter measurement, were lower than that determined by oven drying method.
Tree species of wooden structural members of the Beomeo Temple were identified based on light and scanning electron microscopic characters in the present study. Of 10 structural members, 9 softwoods and 1 hardwood were identified. Among softwood members, 7 belonged to hard pine of the Sylvestris section, and the remaining 2 to hard pine of other than the Sylvestris section and hemlock of the genus Tsuga, respectively. A single hardwood member was identified as white oak of the Prinus section under the subgenus Lepidobalanus.
Investigation of nutrient movement in soil and soil water is necessary to clarify water purification functions and nutrient circulation within a forest ecosystem. In this study, seasonal changes in the nutrient content of soil and soil water was investigated in Korean white pine(Pinus koraiensis) and Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) forest applied urea ($150kg\;ha^{-1}$). Soil pH was decreased rapidly in Japanese larch plot for a long period. On the other hand, soil pH was increased slightly in Korean white pine plot. T-C and T-N content were increased in both plots. In Japanes larch plot, exchangeable Ca and Mg contents were decreased remarkably than those in korean white pine plot while exchangeable K was increased rapidly after application. The effect of urea application on exchangeable K was not obvious compared to other cations. The pH, Ca, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl concentrations in the sampled soil water at surface soil were increased only temporarily after fertilization, with the only exception of the decrease in pH of the soil water in Japanese larch plot. On the other hand, the peak value of K, Mg concentrations in the soil water was shown between 2 and 5 months after fertilization. The concentrations of Ca, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl returned to the values found before fertilization after about 1 month. Those of K, Mg, and $NO_3-N$ after 6-12 months.
This study is to investigate the effects of temperature, light and water deficit on apparent phytosynthesis rate (Pn) and dark respiration rate(Rd) of leaves in the series of studies dealing with primary productivity of korean white pine forest. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The light saturation for Pn occured at about 40 Klux, and light compensation at 1.0 to 1.3 Klux. 2. The Pn of current leaves was highest, and Pn was decreased with increasing leaf age. 3. The Rd on the response of temperature in February was about two times value in all of the temperature ranges as compared with the ones in August. 4. The incipient water stress, above which Pn and Rd declined from 100%, was different for Pn(-10bar). The high water stress required to reduce Pn to nearly 0%, at -24 bar, but Rd was only 43% at -24 bar. 5. The optimum temperature range for Pn showed about 15 to $18^{\circ}C$ in February and 23 to $26^{\circ}C$ in August.
Oribatid mites communities at plantations of the Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) were investigated for the composition and distribution at the Sudong area, Namyangju-gun, Kyung-gido, Korea. Oribatid mites collected were classified into 38 families, 64 genera, and 109 species. Among them the eurysphere, stenosphere, and sporosphere species were 35, 49, and 25 species, respectively. The species diversity of oribatid mites increased at sites from 3 years after to 5 years after transplanting and then decreased by afforested years. The dominant species of oribated mites at the surveyed areas were 6 species including Ceratozetes japonicus. Number of dominent species and recessive species decreased by afforested years. However, influential species increased. According to the MGP analysis I, type G was found in all sites. The eurysphere and the sporosphere species were type G. The stenosphere species were type P at an earlier planting stage, type G at a middle planting stage, type M at a latter planting stage. The semieurysphere species were type M. According to the MGP analysis II, site 1, 2, and 4 were type G, but site 3, 5, and 6 were type P.
In this study, the stand structure of the Korean White Pine stand is analysed by the changing growth situation and the growth model for DBH, Height, and Volume per ha, which is estimated with the data collected for Korean White Pine stand in the Research Forests of Kangwon National University. The results were summarized as follows The estimated equations were (1) Y=20.687Ln(X)-50.431 for DBH, (2) Y=12.951Ln(X)-31.225 for Height, (3) Y=171.06Ln(X)-462.16 for Volume per ha. The mean volumes per ha according to the age classes using the estimated equations were $27.45m^3$$91.05m^3$, $147.71m^3$, $190.03m^3$, $223.84m^3$, $252.01m^3$ and $276.15m^3$ for the age class II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, respectively. And also, the relationship between mean annual increment(MAI) and periodic average increment(PAI) was analysed.

Airborne pollen is known as one of the major causal agents to respiratory allergic reactions. Daily number of pollen grains was monitored using Burkard volumetric spore traps at seven locations including Seoul and Jeju during 1997-2007. Pollen grains were observed throughout the year especially from February to November. They showed similar distribution patterns of species among locations except in Jeju, where Japanese cedar vegetation is uniquely found. Peak seasons for pollen grains from trees and weeds were March to May and August to October, respectively. Tree pollens were mainly composed of pine, oak, alder, and birch. Weed pollens were mainly from Japanese hop, Worm wood, and ragweed. Diameter of pollen grains, which has a typical range of $20{\sim}60{\mu}m$, has close relationship with allergenicity. Allergenicity of tree and weed pollens is higher than that of grass pollens in general. In the case of trees and shrubs, pine trees account for about 70% of all tree pollens. However, pine pollens are weak allergens. The remaining 30% of tree pollens, including alder trees, white birches, and oaks, are moderate to strong allergens despite the smaller numbers. Grass and weeds are also highly likely to cause allergies. Especially, the pollens of Wormwood and Japanese hop are highly likely to cause allergies. Daily fluctuations in the number of pollens have to do with a variety of meteorological factors, such as temperature and rainfall.
The new preparative separation techneque of dihydroquercetin (2, 3-trans-dihdroxy-3, 3', 4', 5, 7-pentahydroxydihydroflavonol) was investigated by liquid chromatography. Also some typical coniferous wood bark were examined for the sources of dihydroquercetin. The good sources of dihydroquercetin were Douglas-fir[Pseudotsuga menziesii] bark and pitch pine [Pinus rigida] bark. There is no dependance the produced place and species dihyroquercetin which is separated by silica-gel column chromatography was taken with white needle-like crystals. This crystals were very stable in the humidity and on the light. It also can stored very long without derivatives.
