  • The perlid stonefly Brahmana flavomarginata Wu, originally described from China from the male adult, is described using reared male and female adults and nymphs from Vietnam. The male adult of B. flavomarginata is distinguished from its congeners by the blackish-brown body color and distinct head marking, hemitergal triangular chitin plates, and a median semicircular smooth subgenital plate (hammer) on the abdominal sternum IX. The female adult has a large and round subgenital plate which extends to the posterior margin of the abdominal sternum X. The nymph can be distinguished by the relatively small compound eyes and the body covered by many long stout setae and short golden brown hair-like setae. This species is known in southwestern China (Yunnan Province) and northern Vietnam (Lao Cai Province, Cao Bang Province).

  • The effects of bisphenol A on the catalase activities in the development stage of zebrafish were investigated. In this study, the catalase activities for zebrafish fries exposed to bisphenol A of 1${\times}$10$\^$-10 g/$\ell$ during 1 week, 2 week, and 4 week post-hatching were examined. Also, the changes of organs weight and the catalase activities for adult zebrafishes exposed to bisphenol A during 3 weeks were investigated. Catalase activities for zebrafish fries exposed to bisphenol A of 1${\times}$10$\^$-10/ g/$\ell$ during 1 week post-hatching were significantly lower, compared to the control. Somewhat, for zebrafish fries exposed to bisphenol A during 4 week post-hatching, catalase activities were significantly increased. For adult zebrafishes, the effects of bisphenol A were higher for female than male. Specially, catalase activities were significantly increased in the ovary of zebrafishes exposed to bisphenol A during 3 weeks. The ovary weight were increased for zebrafishes exposed to bisphenol A during 3 weeks. Catalase activities were increased in the intestine of female exposed to bisphenol A during 3 weeks. Catalase activities were increased in testis exposed to bisphenol A during 3 weeks but there was no significance. In conclusion, the damages of an endocrine disrupter were higher in the earlier development stage compared with adult. The damages were higher for female exposed to an endocrine disrupter compared with male.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of calcium levels(50, 100 and 200% of requirement) on metabolism of Ca, Na and K in Young and adult female rats for 3 weeks. There was no significant difference in feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio among the groups of different Ca intake level. Serum Na level of high-Ca group was significantly lower than that of low-Ca or normal-Ca group in Young rats. There was no significant difference in liver Ca and K contents among the groups of different Ca intake levels. But, Na content in liver was decreased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. Ca content in kidney of high-Ca group in young rats and normal-Ca group in adult rats were significantly higher than those of other groups. Na content in kidney of low-Ca group was lower than those of normal-Ca and high-Ca groups. Urinary excretions of Na and K and fecal excretion of Ca were increased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. But, fecal excretions of Na and K were not affected by dietary Ca intake. According to this study, it was found that the high Ca consumption promotes excretions of fecal Ca and urinary Na and K in rats. The study verifies the need for more study on the interrelationship among Ca, Na and K metabolism and bood pressure.

  • Adults of Prosimulium kiotoense and Twinnia japonensis were collected and reported from Korea for the first time. Since adult black flies are notorious for morphological homogeneity particularly in female, larval and pupal characters have been mainly used to identify them. Adults of P. kiotoense can be identified by the following combination of characteristics: Adult, wing with radial sector (Rs) branched into R2+3 and R4+5; hind leg basitarsus without calcipala; first tarsomere without pedisulcus. Female, claw without basal thumblike lobe; hypogenial valve elongate, convex, heavily sclerotized medially, posterior end touching each other, space between valves rhomboid. Male, claw with basal thumblike lobe; ventral plate keel shaped; gonostylus with 2-3 spinules. Adults and pupa of T. japonensis can be identified by the following combination of characteristics: Adult, antenna with 7 flagellomeres. Female, hypogenial valve broad, posterior end of valve not touching each other; cercus elongate, subquadrate; spermatheca slightly wider and long, round. Male, claw with basal thumblike lobe; gonostylus with 1 spinule; ventral plate flat. Pupa, gill of 16 filaments, arising from 3 swollen stalks; abdominal tergites without spine combs except tergites III and IV with small recurved hooks; terminal spine well developed, wavy shaped.

  • Despite the abundance of research on alcoholic-beverage consumption in the food and beverage marketing literature, research directly assessing and comparing consumers' psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages is relatively limited. There is also a paucity of research comparing drink-type specific consumption motivations in an Asian market. Paying attention to some recent new changes in the alcoholic-beverages market of South Korea, this study investigated South Korean young adult female consumers' alcoholic-beverage type-specific drinking motives. A self-administered online survey of 340 young adult female drinkers about their alcohol-consumption patterns, alcoholic-drink preferences, involvement with alcohol, and four types of drinking motives (coping, social, conformity, and enhancement motives) revealed differences in: (1) the association between the consumer's alcohol involvement level, alcohol consumption frequency/amount, and preferences for alcoholic beverages across different types of alcoholic drinks; (2) the underlying psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages; (3) the association between consumption contexts and alcoholic drink types; and (4) the consumption patterns and drinking motives across different consumer groups that are segmented in terms of their most preferred type of alcoholic beverages. These findings point to the importance of investigating drink-type-specific consumption motivations in alcoholic-beverage consumption research. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed.
