  • The purpose of this study was to investigate critically the existing educational contents and methods on knowledge uncombined with our lives and to explore directions for the integration of educational contents and methods on practical knowledge. For this, firstly, this study selected and analyzed Traditionalism and Progressivism as exclusively opposite approach to education, in particular, the aspect of contents and methods. Next, it explored to define Dewey's activity-based inquiry process. Finally, it showed that the educational contents and methods could not be separated in Dewey's activity-based inquiry process. As a result, educational contents and methods in educational practice were experiences as things integrated. Therefore, knowledge for education has been emphasized as meaningful results that learners have experienced. Once the learners recognize the value and meaning of knowledge, they will be able to internalize the genuine knowledge, moreover they will be self-directed learners. In other words, if learners could discovered their own meaning and value of knowledge in the inquiry process, they have sustainable needs, trying to be involved in the new process based on the knowledge they earned.

  • In this research, we propose a mechanism to develop an inference engine and expert systems based on relational database and SQL (structured query language). Generally, former researchers had tried to develop an expert systems based on text-oriented knowledge base and backward/forward (chaining) inference engine. In these researches, however, the speed of inference was remained as a tackling point in the development of agile expert systems. Especially, the forward inference needs more times than backward inference. In addition, the size of knowledge base, complicate knowledge expression method, expansibility of knowledge base, and hierarchies among rules are the critical limitations to develop an expert systems. To overcome the limitations in speed of inference and expansibility of knowledge base, we proposed a relational database-oriented knowledge base and forward inference engine. Therefore, our proposed mechanism could manipulate the huge size of knowledge base efficiently, and inference with the large scaled knowledge base in a short time. To this purpose, we designed and developed an SQL-based forward inference engine using relational database. In the implementation process, we also developed a prototype expert system and presented a real-world validation data set collected from medical diagnosis field.

  • The synthesis of supplementary features of injection molded parts has been done empirically, since it requires profound knowledge about the features' moldability and causal effects on the properties of the part, which are not available to designers through current CAD systems. RIBBER is a knowledge module which contains knowledge to permit non-experts as well as mold design experts to generate acceptable supplementary features of injection molded parts. A knowledge-based CAD system is constructed by adding the knowledge module, RIBBER, for mold feature synthesis and appropriate CAE programs for mold design analysis to an existing geometric modeler in order to provide designers, at the initial design stage, with comprehensive process knowledge-based CAD system is a new tool which enables the concurrent design and CIM with integrated and balanced design decisions at the initial design stage of injection molding.

  • The process of program debugging is essentially an intelligence intensive process. It is thought viable to develop a knowledge-based tool to help programmer perform this process. This paper presents the design of such a system. Unlike other knowledge-based debugging tools which are mostly based on formal program specification and automatic program understanding, this tool is based on debugging heuristic. This tool is a debugging assistant which only suggests the programmer in program debugging what and where to examine using the debugging heuristic stored in the knowledge base. In this paper, a umber of useful heuristic debugging knowledge are explained and their usage in debugging process are described. The, a scheme to organize the knowledge in the knowledge base and an intelligent program debugging assistant using the knowledge are proposed and discussed.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide appropriate direction for triage education by investigating the knowledge level of triage in 119 EMTs before and after the triage education. Methods : The questionnaire was filled out by newly assigned 33 EMTs in the fire service academy in I metropolitan city from November 1, 2013. The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 21.0 program. Results : The lowest knowledge level by 119 triage was the potential emergency related question, but that by case-based triage was the semi-emergency related questions. The knowledge score by case-based triage before education was 51.14 points. This was lower than knowledge score by 119 triage, that is, 75.70 points. After education, the knowledge level by 119 triage was significantly improved(p =.000). However, there was no significant difference in the knowledge level by case-based triage(p =.236). Conclusion : It is necessary to provide systematic and periodic education and training for 119 EMTs toward triage to improve triage accuracy and efficient circulation of the emergency medical service system. Especially, it is very important to provide case-based triage education for field application.

  • Improving productivity of knowledge workers is an important issue in the 21st century referred as knowledge-based society. The core key word is knowledge sharing among constituents of an organization. The purpose of this study is to combine the social network position factors with attitude and behavior factors, and develop an integrated research model for the knowledge sharing among members of an organization. This study adopted the integrated theoretical framework based on social capital, self-efficacy, transactive memory, and knowledge sharing. Surveys were conducted to 42 organizational members from a department in a leading IT outsourcing company to empirically test the proposed research model. In order to validate the proposed research model, social network analysis tool, UCINET, a structural equation modeling tool, SmartPLS, were utilized. The empirical result showed that, first of all, organizational members' familiarity network position had significant influence on knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability. Second, knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability affected knowledge sharing intention. Third, knowledge sharing intention also had an impact on the job performance. However, organizational members' expertise network position had no significant influence on knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability. This finding reveals the importance of the emotional approach rather than the rational approach in knowledge management. The theoretical and practical implications on the research findings were discussed along with limitations.

  • The paper proposes a knowledge innovation performance model by the dynamic data envelopment analysis with slacks-based measure approach for evaluating the effectiveness of 30 regional knowledge innovation activities in China from 2010 to 2016. In recent years, China has paid more attention to knowledge innovation activities, as central and local governments have pushed on with their innovation projects by lots of investment whatever the difficulties may be. Decision-maker is usually interested in judge its knowledge innovation performance relative to target benchmark by exploring whether one provincial administration region performs better among others and/or if the growth of economy will be benefited greatly by the knowledge innovation activities. To acquire the managerial insight about this issue from a comprehensively designed performance evaluation model, knowledge innovation activity is conceptualized as an intertemporal production process. Invention patent and regional gross product are imposed on desirable outputs, highlighting the need for knowledge economy. The empirical result shows that knowledge innovation has a positive effect on economic development. At the same time, decision-maker should be interest in the economic effect of patents' type and quality. The government should then encourage new technical applications with greater commercial value from a market-oriented perspective, in order to benefit the most from the innovation process in the short-run.

  • This study aims to converge the analysis of institution based view and knowledge based perspectives. Based on the literature review, this study proposed six hypotheses including the moderating effect of institutional characteristics. Hypothesis testing was conducted using PLS(Partial Least Square), which is a structural equation model for 101 start-ups sample. In empirical analysis, all external knowledge characteristics have a positive effect on the knowledge codification capacity. It also positively influenced the performance. The institutional characteristics showed a moderating effects with the novelty of external knowledge and knowledge codification capacity. This study contributes to integrating and analyzing the moderating effects of institution based characteristics with the factor of knowledge based view. Future research needs to analyze the institutional characteristics in a formal and informal way.

  • Objective: We propose empathy as a user research method for service design. Background: We argue that empathy will enable user researchers to go beyond the conceptual knowledge to the design knowledge of user experience. Method: We tested our hypothesis by conducting an experiment in which subjects were required to propose solutions to improve the experience of a family member of a patient hospitalized in an emergency department. Results: We found that the subjects who empathized with the family member of a patient tended to suggest the solutions based on design knowledge rather than the solutions based on conceptual knowledge compared to the subjects who did not empathize. Conclusion: Data support our hypothesis that empathy enables people to focus on design knowledge rather than conceptual knowledge. Application: These findings provide practical implications for user researchers in service design.

  • Although merger and acquisition (M&A) has been considered as an important means to improve firm performance, most prior empirical research have failed to prove the relationship between M&A and firm performance. In order to fill this gap, this study attempts to identify the effect of M&A on firm performance based on knowledge resources relatedness and complementarity theory. For this purpose, this study examines complementarity patterns of knowledge resources and their impacts on acquirer's performance using M&A announcements of electronic commerce industry from 2001 to 2007. The results of this study indicate complementarity among knowledge resources are positively related with acquirer's market value. This study contributes to expand knowledge management research by identifying the relationship among knowledge resources and their impacts on firm performance.
