  • This paper presents a new method for seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings with reference to their operational limit state. The importance of this kind of evaluation arises from the civil protection necessity that some buildings, considered strategic for seismic emergency management, should retain their functionality also after a destructive earthquake. The method is based on the identification of experimental modal parameters from ambient vibrations measurements. The knowledge of the experimental modes allows to perform a linear spectral analysis computing the maximum structural drifts of the building caused by an assigned earthquake. Operational condition is then evaluated by comparing the maximum building drifts with the reference value assigned by the Italian Technical Code for the operational limit state. The uncertainty about the actual building seismic frequencies, typically significantly lower than the ambient ones, is explicitly taken into account through a probabilistic approach that allows to define for the building the Operational Index together with the Operational Probability Curve. The method is validated with experimental seismic data from a permanently monitored public building: by comparing the probabilistic prediction and the building experimental drifts, resulting from three weak earthquakes, the reliability of the method is confirmed. Finally an application of the method to a strategic building in Italy is presented: all the procedure, from ambient vibrations measurement, to seismic input definition, up to the computation of the Operational Probability Curve is illustrated.

  • It tends to be emphasized that mathematics is the important discipline to develop students' mathematical reasoning abilities such as deduction, induction, analogy, and visual reasoning. This study is aimed for investigating the present state about mathematical reasoning in secondary school. We survey teachers' opinions and analyze the results. The results are analyzed by frequency analysis including percentile, t-test, and MANOVA. Results are the following: 1. Teachers recognized mathematics as knowledge constructed by deduction, induction, analogy and visual reasoning, and evaluated their reasoning abilities high. 2. Teachers indicated the importances of reasoning in curriculum, the necessities and the representations, but there are significant difference in practices comparing to the former importances. 3. To evaluate mathematical reasoning, teachers stated that they needed items and rubric for assessment of reasoning. And at present, they are lacked. 4. The hindrances in teaching mathematical reasoning are the lack of method for appliance to mathematics instruction, the unpreparedness of proposals for evaluation method, and the lack of whole teachers' recognition for the importance of mathematical reasoning

  • There exists a structural problem for link structures in the unstable state. The primary characteristics of this problem are in the existence of rigid body displacements without strain, and in the possibility of the introduction of prestressing to change an unstable state into a stable state. When we make local linearized incremental equations in order to obtain knowledge about these unstable structures, the determinant of the coefficient matrices is zero, so that we face a numerically unstable situation. This is similar to the situation in the stability problem. To avoid such a difficult situation, in this paper a simple and straightforward method was presented by means of the generalized inverse for the numerical analysis of stability problem.

  • The test method using simulator to objectively measure the steering feel from several drivers was proposed. It has also described the ideas to analyse the principal factors affecting the steering feel of the driver using the correlation analysis of the measured data and the questionnaire. Proportional Derivative(PD) controller has been used to measure the steering feel, and the control parameters have been selected to obtain the optimal steering feel. Membership frictions of Sugeno fuzzy model are constructed from the assist torque values calculated from PD controller at each steering state. Moreover to verify the performance, this fuzzy controller has been compared with the another fuzzy controller of which membership frictions are derived from the knowledge of drivers. As a result it can be concluded that the proposed fuzzy controller improves the steering feel at each steering state more than any other conventional methods.

  • Purpose: To identify the status of regular cervical cancer screening practices among middle-aged women, the associations between regular practice and research factors, and the predictive model and factors effecting such behavior was studied. Method: Two hundred women, aged 40 to 60, were selected by convenience in one urban area of Seoul. They were asked about their regular attendance for screening, knowledge of cancer and screening, health belief, health self-determination index and certain personal factors. Result: Approximately 54.5% of the women had periodic screening tests every 6 months to 2 years. Their knowledge of cervical cancer and health belief were at the medium level of each scale, but their health self-determination scores (HSDI) were low. Some influencing factors, and their cancer odds ratio were identified through univariate regression analysis. These variables were included in a predictive model, and this model proved to have enough fit and classification power (83.5%). In this model, the financial state, self-belief and self-determination scores were found to be significant. Conclusion: Middle-age women's intrinsic motivation for healthy behavior was found to be low in those who felt to be in a poor financial state, had higher perceived barriers, lower perceived benefits and a lower prevalence of undergoing regular screening test.

  • A three-component coupling reaction of phenylacetylene, p-toluenesulfonyl azide, and water through copper catalysis is described to provide knowledge of spectroscopy and catalytic reactions and to introduce current research topics in organic chemistry for second-year undergraduate students. In the presence of stoichiometric amounts of phenylacetylene, p-toluenesulfonyl azide, and triethylamine, the reaction was performed with 4 mol% CuCl in water as the sole solvent and was completed in 1.5 h. A practical purification method and recrystallization of the crude reaction mixture resulted in the rapid isolation of the desired product with yields of 42~65%. Students characterized 4-methyl-N-(phenylacetyl)benzenesulfonamide by using melting-point determination, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This experimental procedure and spectroscopic data analysis will serve as a platform for students to apply classroom knowledge in practical state-of-the-art research.
