A Study of Mental Health Literacy Among North Korean Refugees in South Korea

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate North Korean refugees' knowledge of mental illnesses and treatments and analyze the factors affecting this knowledge. Methods: Subjects were selected via a snowball sampling method, and the survey outcomes of 152 North Korean refugee participants were analyzed. The factors affecting knowledge of mental illnesses were analyzed via a regression analysis by constructing a multivariate model with mental illness knowledge score as the dependent variable. Results: The North Korean refugees' mental illness scores ranged from 3 to 24 points, with an average score of 13.0. Regarding the factors that influence mental illness knowledge, the subjects with South Korean spouses and those who had spent more time in South Korea had higher knowledge scores. Furthermore, the subjects who considered the mental health of North Korean refugees to be a serious issue revealed lower knowledge scores than those who did not believe it was a serious issue. The subjects who visit psychiatric clinics showed higher knowledge scores than those who do not. The South Korean subjects who had at least a college education exhibited higher scores than did those without advanced education. The subjects who are satisfied with life in South Korea manifested a higher mental illness knowledge score than those who are not. Conclusions: This study is significant as being the first study to ever measure and evaluate the level of North Korean refugees' knowledge of mental illnesses. In addition, the evaluations of North Korean refugees' mental illness knowledge and influencing factors while residing in South Korea created basic data that formed the foundation of an effort to enhance mental health literacy and provide proper mental health services. The results of this study can be utilized to solve mental health problems that might frequently occur during the unification process of North and South Korea in the future.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge and prevention attitudes of female North Korean refugees regarding cervical cancer and human papillomavirus(HPV) infection. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted. Data were collected from November 2015 to March 2016 and 130 female North Korean refugees participated. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0. Results: Score on knowledge and prevention attitudes regarding cervical cancer and HPV were 2.53 out of 8 points, 1.67 out of 17 points, and 28.90 out of 36 points. There were significant differences between entry duration, the number of children, previous cervical cancer tests, Precognition about HPV, preferred education method, and knowledge of cervical cancer. There were significant differences between previous cervical cancer tests, Precognition about HPV and knowledge of HPV. The correlation between knowledge and prevention attitudes regarding cervical cancer and HPV was significant positive. Conclusion: Female North Korean refugees' knowledge level of cervical cancer and HPV is very low. However, their attitudes towards prevention was higher. These results imply a need for education, aimed at guiding North Korean female refugees, so as to enhance their knowledge regarding cervical cancer and HPV, and to promote their sexual health.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge and attitude on tuberculosis by parents of North Korean refugees' children. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted. Data were collected from July to November, 2014 in Hanawon and 74 North Korean refugee parents participated in the study. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0. Results: The score for knowledge was 17.72 out of 30 points, for awareness in attitude, 49.34 out of 60 points and for prevention behavior in attitude, 48.39 out of 60 points. There were positive significant correlations among knowledge, attitude and health interest. There was also a significant positive correlation between awareness and prevention behavior in attitude, and between prevention behavior and health interest. Conclusion: North Korean refugee parents showed a low level of knowledge and a negative attitude. The implication of these results is an awareness of the need for education on the causes, transmission and importance of treatment for tuberculosis. This kind of education can guide North Korean refugee parents to obtain correct information and positive attitudes and therefore, be able to effectively practice appropriate health behaviors in tuberculosis management for their children.

중학생의 북한에 대한 지식과 새터민에 대한 고정관념의 관계에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Relationship of Stereotypical Attitudes of Middle School Students toward Saeteomins (North Korean Refugees) to Knowledge of North Korea)

  • 다문화 교육의 실천은 세계 여러 나라마다 다문화 사회 형성의 특징에 따라 다양하게 전개되고 있는 가운데, 최근 우리나라는 다문화 사회로의 변화에 대해 여러 분야에서 다문화 교육의 필요성이 제기되고 있는 있다. 본 연구에서는 새터민에 대한 고정관념과 사회적 친밀감의 정도가 북한에 대한 지식과 어떤 관련성이 있는지 살펴보았다. 새터민은 세계 여러 지역에서 이주해 온 이주자들처럼 한국사회에 적응해야하는 상황이면서, 언어적, 민족적 동질성을 가진 특수성을 가진다. 같은 민족이면서 다른 문화속에서 살아왔기 때문에 새터민과 남한 사람사이에는 문화적 이질감이 존재하고 있는데 새터민의 문화적 다양성을 인정하고 수용할 수 있는 태도를 갖도록 하는 것은 다문화적 감수성을 함양의 한 축이라고 할 수 있다. 새터민의 탈북양상이 최근 가족단위의 이주가 증가하면서, 학령기 아동의 한국사회 적응은 관련 당사자 모두의 과제인 가운데, 본 연구는 학교현장에서 중학생들이 새터민 학생들을 바라보는 시각에 주목하게 되었다. 본 연구에서 북한에 대한 지식을 범주화하여 교과지식, 북한상식, 시사이슈로 나누었으며 각각의 설명력 분석 결과, 북한에 대한 지식은 새터민에 대한 태도에 영향을 주고 있었다. 2007년 개정 교육과정의 적용에 따라 북한에 대한 교육 내용이 변화되는 상황에서 본 연구 결과는 지리교육 내용을 구성에 시사점을 가지며, 다문화교육 실천에 교과의 내용지식의 활용 가능성을 밝혔다는데 연구의 의의를 두고자 한다.

북한이탈 학령기 아동에 대한 구강건강교육 효과 (Effect of Oral Health Education on Oral Health Knowledge, Oral Health Behavior and Oral Hygiene Status in Children from North Korea)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health education on oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status of children from North Korea. Methods: Participants were 32 North Korean children defectors (15 in the education group, 17 in the control group). The oral health education program, including theoretical training and toothbrush training, was done once a week for 4 weeks. Effects of the education program were assessed for oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status at pretest, 0, and 4 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA with the SAS program. Results: Children in the education group showed increased oral health knowledge and behavior over time compared to the control group and an improvement in oral hygiene status including significantly decreased S-PHP and Snyder test for oral micro-organism. Conclusion: Results indicate that oral health education is effective in improving oral health knowledge, oral health behavior and oral hygiene status. These improvements could lead to a better quality of life for North Korean children defectors.

새터민의 B형간염 인식과 지식에 관한 연구 (Awareness and Knowledge about Hepatitis B among North Korean Immigrants)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify awareness and knowledge about hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among North Korean immigrants who had resided in South Korea. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, community based study. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 198 North Korean immigrants aged 18 years old through 65 years old among those who had attended community centers, local churches, and gathering places in four cities. The questionnaire included 15 items about participants' knowledge on HBV infection and its consequences, mode of transmission, and preventive measures. Results: The mean score of HBV knowledge was $6.3{\pm}3.8$ (range 0~15). The items that over 60% of the respondents checked correct answer regarding knowledge about HBV were 'There is blood screening for hepatitis B infection', 'Hepatitis B can be transmitted through sharing needles with infected person'. Multivariate analysis showed that received education for the prevention of HBV infection and disease morbidity were significantly associated with the knowledge of HBV infection. Overall, approximately 11% of total variability in the knowledge of HBV infection could be explained by the 2 variables in this model ($R^2=.109$, p<.001). Conclusion: The results showed that North Korean immigrants need more education on HBV infection and prevention to improve their knowledge about HBV.

Knowledge of atopic dermatitis and food allergies, as well as health information literacy, among North Korean refugee mothers: a descriptive survey study

  • Purpose: This study investigated knowledge of atopic dermatitis and food allergies, as well as health information literacy, among North Korean refugee mothers with preschool-age children and explored how these variables were related to participants' characteristics. Methods: A descriptive study design was used. Data from 130 North Korean refugee mothers were collected between January and March 2023. Results: The mean scores were 14.48 of 30 for atopic dermatitis knowledge; 2.77 of 10 for food allergy knowledge, and 56.95 of 80 for health information literacy. Significant differences were observed in knowledge of atopic dermatitis based on breastfeeding duration (F=4.12, p=.009), and in knowledge of food allergies based on mixed feeding (F=3.11, p=.049). Health information literacy showed significant relationships with education level (F=3.76, p=.026), occupation (F=3.99, p=.021), checking nutritional information (t=2.91, p=.004), mixed feeding (F=4.50, p=.014), and atopic dermatitis diagnosis (t=6.86, p=.001). Significant positive correlations were observed between atopic dermatitis knowledge, food allergy knowledge, and health information literacy. Conclusion: Personalized educational programs should be implemented to improve awareness of allergies and health information literacy among North Korean refugee mothers, which would help them find, evaluate, and understand health-related information. These programs should focus on providing nutrition and dietary education to promote healthy growth in children and prevent diseases.

북한이탈여성을 위한 자궁경부암 예방 교육의 효과 (Effectiveness of Preventive Education on Cervical Cancer for North Korean Refugee Women)

  • 본 연구는 남북 여성 건강 격차 완화에 기여하기 위해 북한이탈여성을 위한 자궁경부암 예방 교육을 개발하여 시행하고 그 효과를 검증한 비동등성 대조군 전후 설계를 이용한 유사 실험 연구이다. 남한에 거주하고 있는 20대 북한이탈여성 42명을 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다. 인유두종 바이러스 연계 자궁경부암 예방 교육을 받은 실험군은 대조군에 비해 자궁경부암 지식(U=40.00, p<.001), 인유두종 바이러스 지식(U=4.50, p<.001), 인유두종 바이러스 백신접종에 대한 태도(U=128.00, p=.013) 점수가 유의하게 증가하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 북한이탈여성을 위한 자궁경부암 예방이 대상자들의 자궁경부암 지식, 인유두종 바이러스 지식, 인유두종 바이러스 백신접종에 대한 태도를 향상시키는 효과적인 간호 중재인 것으로 나타났다. 통일에 대비하여 남북 여성 건강 격차를 완화하기 위해서는 자궁경부암 예방 교육을 집단교육에 지속적으로 적용할 수 있도록 하는 등의 정책 지원이 필요하다.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to help the teachers in school to widen the knowledge and to understand the North Korean society by comparative analysis of South and North Korean elementary school's mathematics education process and text books. It is needless to say that we need to have more knowledge and understanding about North Korea as the international and national situation is changing so rapidly these days. One of the most effective ways to understand North Korea is to understand their education. So, 1 wrote this thesis as a way of getting ready for the united Korea by knowing mathematics texts and their system, composition, contents of elementary school in North Korea If this little try is going to be a help in anyway, I will try to do a better study in future.

북한 소학교와 초급중학교 과학과 교사용 지도서의 교수내용지식(PCK) 요소 분석 (An Analysis of the PCK Components of Science Teacher's Guidebooks for Elementary School and Middle School in North Korea)

  • 본 연구는 북한에서 '2013 제1차 전반적 12년제 의무교육강령'이 시행된 이후에 출판된 소학교 1학년과 초급중학교 1학년 과학과 교사용 지도서에 나타난 PCK 요소를 분석함으로써 북한에서 진행되는 과학교육을 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 분석 결과 두 지도서 모두 '과학 내용에 관한 지식'의 비율이 가장 높았고, '과학 교수전략에 관한 지식', '과학교육과정 관한 지식'이 뒤를 이었다. 반면에 '과학 평가에 관한 지식', '학생에 관한 지식'은 내용이 현저하게 부족하였다. '과학 내용에 관한 지식'에서는 소학교와 초급중학교 모두 '개념 및 이론'의 비중이 가장 높았으며 '실험 및 탐구'의 비중도 다른 PCK 요소에 비해서는 상당히 높았다. 북한의 과학과 지도서는 학생에게 과학 개념 및 이론을 전달하거나 탐구 수업을 진행할 때 '토론'을 활동으로 제시함으로써 구성주의 교수 흐름을 표방하고 있었다. '과학 교수 전략에 관한 지식'은 '주제-특이적 전략' 중 '활동 순서 및 방식'을 안내하는 부분이 주를 이루었으며 '교과-특이적 전략'은 극히 일부분만 제시되었다. 또한 북한의 과학과 지도서는 총론과 각론 모두에서 과학교육의 이론적 배경 요소가 거의 제시되지 않았다. '과학 교육과정에 관한 지식'은 '수업 목표'가 주를 이루었고, '수직 연계'와 '수평 연계'도 일부 제시되었다. '과학 평가에 관한 지식'과 '학생에 관한 지식'은 우리나라의 과학과 지도서와 비교했을 때 차지하는 비중이 작았다.
