Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of a taping method on pain and ROM of the knee joint in the elderly. Method: The subjects were seniors registered in a senior welfare center in D city. An experimental group of 30 persons and acontrol group of 33 persons were chosen and according to the proper conditions and a knee pain score was marked from 1-5 on a Numerical Pain Rating Scale. For the experimental group, the taping method was conducted three times a week for four weeks (twelve times in all) but the control group did not receive taping.. The measuring instrument of knee pain was a numerical pain rating scale from 0 to 10 and the ROM score was the average value of three measured values with a goniometer. The data was analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 using an $x^2-test$, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and time contrast. Result: Knee joint pain was significantly decreased in the experimental group over that of the control group (p=.001). In addition, knee joint ROM of the experimental group was significantly improved over that of the control group (p=.001). Conclusion: It was proven that the taping method was effective for pain relief and increasing ROM of the knee joint in the elderly.

It is necessary to have a model that describes the feature of the knee Joint with a sufficient accuracy. Koreans, however, do not have their own knee joint model to be used in the total knee replacement arthroplasty. They have to use European or American models which do not match Koreans. Three-dimensional visualization techniques are found to be useful in a wide range of medical applications. Three-dimensional imaging studies such as CT(computed tomography) and MRI(magnetic resonance image) provide the primary source of patient-specific data. Three-dimensional knee joint models were constructed by image processing of the CT data of 10 subjects. Using the constructed model, the dimensions of Korean knee joint were measured. And this study proposed a three-dimensional model and data, which can be helpful to develop Korean knee implants and to analyze knee joint movements.

Purpose: The purpose of this is to identify the relationship among the age, body mass index(BMI) and exercise frequency(EF) with knee joint position sense in korean healthy women. Methods: Healthy women of 328 who participated in this study were tested knee joint position sense; reposition error was measured with a Myrin goniometer. Each reposition error was analyzed using descriptive statics, pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean reposition error by age groups was significant decrease getting older. The mean reposition error by BMI groups was significant decrease getting higher. And the mean reposition error by EF groups was significant decrease getting lower. The knee joint position sense showed a significantly correlation with age(r=0.36, p=.00), BMI(r=0.34, p=.00) and EF(r=-0.50, p=.00). The most powerful predictor of knee joint position sense was EF. The reposition error according to stepwise multiple regression is $3.36+(-2.64){\times}EF+0.13{\times}age$, and account for 46%($R^2=0.46$) of the variance in the knee joint position sense. Conclusion: The older the women are, for prevent of knee injuries due to decreased joint position sense, regular exercise is essential factor.
The purpose of this study was to compare the joint position sense at the knee joint at 3 different surface conditions by using the active knee joint angle reproduction test in the standing position. Twenty healthy volunteers (10 males and 10 females) age 20~29 years were recruited for this study. The knee joint position senses were assessed at three different surface conditions: on the floor (stable condition), TOGU (soft condition), and seat fit (unstable condition) in a closed kinetic chain. Testing orders were selected randomly. The absolute angle error was defined as the absolute difference between target angles ($30^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ knee flexion) and subject perceived angle of the knee flexion. One way ANOVA was used to compare the absolute angle of error among 3 different conditions. The Independent t-test was used to compare the absolute angle of error between male and female. The error angles were significantly different among surface conditions ($1.3^{\circ}{\pm}1.2^{\circ}$ for the floor, $2.1^{\circ}{\pm}0.9^{\circ}$ for the TOGU, and $4.4^{\circ}{\pm}1.8^{\circ}$ for the seat fit, p<.05). There was no significant difference in error angle between male and female. In conclusion, the joint position sense of the knee joint in the closed kinetic chain decreased at unstable surface conditions. The result of this study indicates that surface conditions should be considered when assessing and training the joint position sense of the knee joint in clinical setting.
Fat pad syndrome is a knee joint condition/disease where acute or chronic inflammation occurs in the fat pad of the knee joint, and it is a cause of anterior knee pain. Fat pad syndrome usually occurs concurrently with other conditions/diseases to collectively cause anterior knee pain. No study to date has reported the treatment of anterior knee pain solely due to fat pad syndrome. Here, we report a case of fat pad syndrome of the knee joint as the sole cause of anterior knee pain in a 49-year-old woman who received integrated Korean medicine treatments (pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, herbal medicine, deep fascial meridian therapy, and chuna). Using patient-reported pain scale scores, the level of the patient's pain was relieved, and her mobility improved. Integrated Korean medicine treatments could be effective for patients who have fat pad syndrome of the knee joint.

Many people are exposed to accidents by vehicles or sports. The most frequent injuries by these accidents is concerned with a knee joint. The three-dimensional surface model of a knee is needed for dynamic analysis of knee motion and knee reconstruction. three-dimensional motion data of a knee joint were obtained using X-ray and precise magnetic sensors. The surface data of a femur and a tibia were obtained using cross-sectional pictures by CT. The three-dimensional surface models of a femur and a tibia were made by the method of optimal triangular patch. Using obtained motion data, we simulated the motion of three-dimensional knee joint model.

The goal of total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is to replace patient's knee joint with artificial implants in order to restore normal knee joint functions. Since mismatched knee implants often cause a critical balancing problem and short durability, designing a well-fitted implant to a patient's knee joint is essential to improve surgical outcomes. We developed a software system that three-dimensionally (3D) simulates TKR surgery based upon 3D knee models reconstructed from computed tomography (CT) imaging. The main task of the system was to extract precise 3D anatomical parameters of a patient's knee that were directly used to determine a custom fit implant and to virtually perform TKR surgery. The virtual surgery was simulated by amputating a 3D knee model and positioning the determined implant components on the amputated knee. The test result shows that it is applicable to derive surgical parameters, determine individualized implant components, rehearse the whole surgical procedure, and train medical staff or students for actual TKR surgery. The feasibility and verification of the proposed system is described with examples.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the lower extremity muscle activity and knee joint load according to movement speed conditions during the barbell back squat. Method: Nine males with resistance training experience participated in this study. Participants performed the barbell back squat in three conditions (Standard, Fast, and Slow) differing movement speed. During the barbell back squat, muscle activity of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), biceps femoris long head (BFL), semitendinosus (ST), gluteus maximus (GM), gastrocnemius (GCN), and tibialis anterior (TA) was collected using an 8 channel wireless EMG system. The peak flexion angle of the lower extremity joints and the peak resultant joint force in each direction of the knee joint were calculated using eight motion capture cameras and ground reaction force plates. This study was to used the Friedman test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test, to compare lower extremity muscle activity and peak resultant joint force at knee joint according to movement speed conditions during the barbell back squat, and the statistical significance level was set at .01. Results: In the downward phase of the barbell back squat, the RF and TA showed the higher muscle activity in the fast condition, and in the upward phase, RF, VL, VM, BFL, ST, GM, and TA showed the higher muscle activity in the fast condition. As a results, analyzing of the load on the knee joint, in the downward phase, and in the upward phase, the higher peak compressive force of the knee joint was showed in the fast condition. Conclusion: The barbell back squat with fast movement speed was more effective due to increased muscle activity of lower extremity, but one must be careful of knee joint injuries because the load on the knee joint may increase during the barbell back squat with fast movement speed.
Objective : This study was to investigate the clinical effect of Rubiae Radix pharmacopuncture on knee joint pain. Methods : The patients were treated by Rubiae Radix pharmacopuncture, Acupuncture, herbal medicine. To evaluate the effect of the treatment, The patient's symptoms were assessed by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) Score, Knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score(KOOS) and physical examinations. Results : In all cases, the pain was reduced significantly according to improvement of VAS score, KOOS and active Range Of Motion(ROM) of knee joint. VAS score and KOOS of all cases were decreased. In two cases, ROM of knee joint has improved. But in one case, ROM of knee joint has still been restricted. But there are no noticeable changes in physical examinations. Conclusion : These results suggest that Rubiae Radix pharmacopuncture might be an effective method to treat patients with knee joint pain. But, It's necessary to have more observations and experiments with Rubiae Radix pharmacopuncture.

Quantitative information of a three dimensional(3D) kinematics of joint is very useful in knee joint surgery, understanding how knee kinematics related to joint injury, impairment, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation. In this paper, an automated 2D/3D image matching technique was developed to estimate the 3D in vivo knee kinematics using dual X-ray images. First, a 3D geometric model of the knee was reconstructed from CT scan data. The 3D in vivo position and orientation of femoral and tibial components of the knee joint could be estimated by minimizing the pixel by pixel difference between the projection images from the developed 3D model and the given X-ray images. The accuracy of the developed technique was validated by an experiment with a cubic phantom. The present 2D/3D image matching technique for the estimation of in vivo joint kinematics could be useful for pre-operative planning as well as post-operative evaluation of knee surgery.
