Effects of Maize Source and Complex Enzymes on Performance and Nutrient Utilization of Broilers

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of maize source and complex enzymes containing amylase, xylanase and protease on performance and nutrient utilization of broilers. The experiment was a $4{\times}3$ factorial design with diets containing four source maize samples (M1, M2, M3, and M4) and without or with two kinds of complex enzyme A (Axtra XAP) and B (Avizyme 1502). Nine hundred and sixty day old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were used in the trial (12 treatments with 8 replicate pens of 10 chicks). Birds fed M1 diet had better body weight gain (BWG) and lower feed/gain ratio compared with those fed M3 diet and M4 diet (p<0.05). Apparent ileal crude protein digestibility coefficient of M2 was higher than that of M3 (p<0.05). Apparent metabolisable energy (AME) and nitrogen corrected AME (AMEn) of M1 were significant higher than those of M4 (p<0.05). Supplementation of the basal diets with enzyme A or B improved the BWG by 8.6% (p<0.05) and 4.1% (p>0.05), respectively. The fresh feces output was significantly decreased by the addition of enzyme B (p<0.05). Maize source affects the nutrients digestibility and performance of broilers, and a combination of amylase, xylanase and protease is effective in improving the growth profiles of broilers fed maize-soybean-rapeseed-cotton mixed diets.

A Survey on Foods of Principal Products in Jeollabukdo Area (전라북도 지역의 주요 특산물 중 식품에 대한 조사)

  • This survey was performed to investigate the distribution of specialities which cultivated importantly in Jeollabukdo area in order to understand food culture of this area. Foods in speciality were divided into 4 groups, agricultural, aquatic, animal and the others products. Total number of 93 species of specialities, including 40 species of agricultural products, 29 species of aquatic products, 8 species of animal products and 16 species of the miscellaneous products, were identified from Jeollabukdo area. Especially, there were various fruits and vegetables among agricultural products and fishes among aquatic products in this region. Rice, pepper, pear, Mandarin fish, beef, pine mushroom, lentinus edodes and honey were determined as specialities in Jeollabukdo area. Various aquatic products were specialities in Gochang, Gunsan, Buan and Gimje region. Fruits, mushrooms, wild edible greens and animal products were specialities in Muju, Jangsu, Jeongeup and Jinan. Sweet fish, cat fish and freshwater crab were caught off in Sumjin river region only such as Namwon, Sunchang and Imsil, Recently, pumpkin(Cucurbita maxima) and paprika were determined as specialities in Jeollabukdo. In case of aquatic products, mushrooms and wild edible greens, their wild type products decreased, while cultivated type increased Commercialization by brand naming of agricultural and animal products were rapidly increasing. The kinds of specialities in Jeollabukdo area were changing by the influence of geographical, religious and social factors.

  • A study was carried out to compare the daily foods which were eaten during $14{\sim}19$ century among Korea (Chosun dynasty), China (Ming, thing dynasty), and Japan (Muromachi, Edo era). Specially, in Ming, Ching dynasty, Noodles and dumpling were cooked very often and in Muromachi, Edo era, many kinds of beans were used so much, and there were many kinds of steamed rice to compare with Korea and China. Also, in Japan at these era Woodong, Morisoba, and Somyen were used as favorite foods harbitually. 1. The crops were used as staple foods in three countries such as steamed rice, gruel, noodle, dumpling, rice cake etc. commonly. 2. In Chosun, a roe deer, deer, antelope, and wild boar were more favoite dishes than cow, chicken, and dog, generally people enjoyed to eat pork and chicken. In Ming Ching, pork, chicken, goose, dove, lamb, ass, and duck were used as food materials, also wild animals such as deer, rabbit, and monkey etc. were used. In Muromach era, wild animal as racoon dog, otter, deer, antelope, bear, were used as food materials, in early Edo era (Yayoi and Momoyama), beef and pork were used as daily foods but they were eaten decreasingly in Edo era. So in Japan at those era, the dishes prepared of fishes were more than those of meats. For example, Sushi was made from that time, people all over the world are enjoying to have Sushi at present time. 3. Also in these era, many kinds of vegetables and fruits were used in three countries, and new kinds of vegetables and fruits were introduced from foreign countries, for example, red pepper, pumpkin, sweet potato, potato in Korea, corn, sweet potato, red pepper in China, and water melon, pumpkin, corn, red pepper, marmellow, sweet potato, sugar beet in Japan.

Analysis of Actual Use Situation of Animal Medicine in Hanwoo Farms (한우농가의 동물약품 이용실태 분석)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the actual situation of animal medicine use in Hanwoo farms, which were a total of 114 farms. Items surveyed were preference of animal medicine, choice criterion, purchase route, purchase frequency, antibiotics substitution products, etc. Data were collected from May to June, 2010. The kinds of animal medicine which preferred in Hanwoo farms is probiotics (40.4%). Whereas the lowest preference is immunizing agent (12.3%). There was significant difference among regional group (p<0.05), and the significant difference was also found in different farm size group (p<0.05). The factor of choice for purchase of animal medicine was efficiency (31.6%), first of all. There was significant difference among regional group (p<0.05). The purchase route of animal medicine was mostly supplied with the help of government (41.6%). The significant difference were showed in regional group (p<0.05). But that was not found in farm size group (p>0.05). The highest frequency at purchasing antibiotics was less than 1 time per 1 year (38.6%). There was statistically significant difference among regional group (p<0.05). However, there was not significant difference among farm size group (p>0.05). Probiotics of antibiotics substitution products was mostly preferred (50.9%).

Possible Production of Transgenic Chicken by Transferring Foreign Genes and Germ Cells (외부유전자의 전이에 의한 배아세포와 트란스젠닉 가금 생산의 가능성)

  • In recent years, numerous researches have been carried out in author's laboratory to develop several kinds of methods for producing transgened chicken, leaving a lot of new findings. Some of them are very useful to search for new approaches necessary to improve the efficiency of hatchability and the survival rate of developing trasgened embryos. The results obtained hitherto might be summarized as follows: (1) foreign gene(Lac Z/ Miw Z) introduced into blastodermal cells of developing embryos was successfully transferred to embryos, leading to the production of primordial germ cells(PGCs) carrying foreign DNA. However, hatched hickens failed to show the incorporation of introduced gene into the gonads. (2) When foreign gene was introduced into germinal crescent region (GCR), the gene was also efficiently incorporated into germ cells, resulting in the production of transgened chickens(offspring) which produced fruther offspring having foreign gene in the gonads. In this case, 2nd and 3rd generations of chickens were obtained through the reproduction of transgened birds. (3) In another way, the gene was injected into blood vessels of developing embryos at stage 13∼15, creating PGCs having foreign gene, and produced some transgened chickens. In this work, the PGCs were transfered between embryos, resulting in the production of transgenic chickens. (4) in these experiments, PGCs were effectively employed for producing transgenic birds, developing some kinds of chimeric chickens from homo- or hetero-sexual transfer of the PGCs from embryos. This means that the gonads from donor PGCs developed in some degree to the stage of hatching. However, these gonads showed slightly abnormal tissues similar to ovotestis like organs through histological examination. (5) Avian Leukosis Virus(ALV) induced B cell line(DT40) successfully carried foreign genes into chicken embryos, suggesting the possibility of the cells as a vector in this field of study in the future. A Study of Ku on the costume of the variant races dynasty in China-based on Khitai, Mongols and Manchus costume- (중국 민왕조 복식에서 에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the Ku which was worn by nomadic tribes which was Khitai, Mongols and Manchus. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The fur clothes were very important clothes that nomadic tribes put on in order to protect them against the cold. The Ku was an outfit for protection against the cold. It was made of ani-mal fur and its style was tight sleeve and long dress. 2. The Ku was worn in all social classes including emperor, nobles and the masses in ancient China and Asia dynasty. After the nomadic tribes estabilished dynasty in China the style of Ku was changed. All kinds of animal fur was used to make the Ku but the volume of fur, kinds and colors were classified severely by their social position. In Khitai dynasty the Ku was worn in same style. But the emperor wore the Ku of silver marten. The noble class wore the Ku of purple, black and blue marten and silver squirrel skin. The masses wore the Ku of the other colors marten, sheep, squirrel and dessert fox skin. In Mongol dynasty, the emperor wore the Ku of purple marten, silver squirrel, silver fox and black fox skin. The nobles wore the Ku of the other colors marten and squirrel. The masses wore the Ku of degraded animal fur. Before the Manchus estabilished the varient races dynasty in China, the rich man preferred the Ku of marten, squirrel, fox, goat furs. But the poorman preferred the Ku of cow, horses, pig, sheep, cat, dog, snake and deer skin. After the manchus conquered the China, the manners of dress were changed. Generally the fur did not appear in right side of garment, but high quality or noble fur appeared outside. Sometimes the inside or outside of Ku was made of silk fabrics and sleeves, neck-band was made of the high quality fur.

Elevating Utilization Efficiency of Excellent Embryos in Mammals IV. Study of Improving the Implantation of Transferred Embryos (우수 포유동물 수정난의 이용효율 제고에 관한 연구 IV. 이식한 수정난의 착상율 증진에 관한 기초연구)

  • These experiments were investigate the effects of bacterial infection of uterus and vagina during bovine embryo transferring on the development of embryo. We examined the distribution of reproductive disordered cow by akind of disease, identified the bacteria isolated from the vagina of those cows and bacterial infectin of media and its treatment with several kinds of antibiotics at that. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The total 592 reproductive disordered cows were caused by ovarian dysfunction(43.4%), ovary-uterus complication(24.5%), endometrities(17.7%), and repeat breeder(12.0%). 2. The main bacteria among 11 kinds of bacteria(113 colonies) was E. coli(38 colonies, 33.6%). Likewise, E. coli was propotioned to 23 and 22.7% among bacteria from vagina of endometritis and repeat breeder, respectively. 3. The sensitivities of viginal bacteria to pencillin and streptomycin were 6.2 and 4.4% respectively, but those to gentamycin and chloramphenicol were 22.1 and 16.8%, respectively. The similar sensitivities were found in the embryo recovery media. 4. The rates of bacterial infection of recovery medim and that of abnormal development of embryo were 75 and 80%, respectively. 5. The antibiotic sensitivity assay of ova recovery media showed gentamicin and chloramphenicol gave better results than streptomycin and penicillin. 6. The developmental rate of 1-cell stage mice embryos was 34.0% in bacterial infected culture media, but was 40.0, 58.0, 40.0 or 30.0% with the treatment of kanamycin, gentamycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, or penicillin, respectively.

Analysis of the current status of quantitative literature evidence for the prescription of 56 herbal medicines covered by health insurance (건강보험 급여 한약제제 56종 처방의 계량적 문헌 근거 현황 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the current state of quantitative literature evidence for the prescription of 56 herbal medicines covered by health insurance that have been studied in Korea for the past 30 years, to evaluate the reliability of the evidence, and to find out the research direction of herbal medicine prescription in the future. Methods: 56 kinds of herbal medicine prescriptions were searched in domestic literature search databases OASIS, DBpia, and overseas PubMed, classified into chemistry, toxicity, cells, animals, clinical cases, and clinical trial studies, and built into an EBM pyramid structure. Results: When classified according to research contents, there were 61 cases (7.5%) of physicochemical analysis to identify constituent substances, 80 cases (9.8%) of toxicity evaluation, and 672 cases (82.7%) of efficacy evaluation. The efficacy evidence was classified according to the evidence-based medical pyramid structure: 196 cell trials (29.1%), 372 animal trials (55.4%), 89 case and case reporting series (13.3%), 7 comparative case studies (1.1%), and 8 randomized control clinical trials (1.2%). In the pyramid composition, the basis for the validity of 56 kinds of herbal medicines prescribed was 568 cases (84.5%) in cell and animal units, which could not be said to be highly reliable. There was no relationship between the ranking of quantitative literature evidence for herbal medicine prescriptions and the ranking of salary administration. Conclusions: In an era that continues to require scientific evidence for herbal medicine, traditional herbal medicine should secure the basis for safety validity even for the 10th most frequent prescription among 56 herbal medicine prescriptions for consumers. In particular, traditional herbal medicine should increase the quantitative and qualitative level of case reports on related herbal medicine prescriptions, focusing on each clinical society, and move toward comparative case studies and randomized clinical trial so that traditional herbal medicine is positioned as Evidence-based medicine.

Study on the Effect of Cysteine and Myo-inositol on In Vitro Maturation of Porcine Oocytes

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of morphology of oocytes, kinds of media, cysteine and myo-inositol supplementation on IVM rate of porcine oocytes. Cumulus- enclosed oocytes were incubated in maturation NCSU-23 and TCM-199 medium with supplementation with 3, 5, 10, 20 mM myo-inositol and 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mM cysteine. 1. When classified by morphology, excellent, good and fair of cumulus-enclosed oocytes were incubated for 48 hrs and the IVM rate were $14.2{\pm}3.7%{\sim}58.7{\pm}4.0%$, respectively. The rate were greater in oocytes with excellent cumulus cells than those without cumulus cells. 2. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured in TCM-199 and NCSU- 23 medium supplementation or non-supplementation with 1.0 mM myo-inositol were $7.5{\pm}4.5%,\;45.0{\pm}4.8%\;and\;4.4%,\;42.5{\pm}4.2%,\;18.0{\pm}5.2%$, respectively. Supplementation with myo-inositol significantly increased the IVM rate of oocytes. 3. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured in NCSU-23 medium supplementation of 3, 5, 10, 20 mM myo-inositol for 48 hrs were $47.5{\pm}4.5%,\;57.5{\pm}4.2%,\;62.5{\pm}4.9%,\;50.0{\pm}5.2%$, respectively. The IVM rate of oocytes in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 10 mM myo-inositol were significantly increased compared to control ($42.5{\pm}4.0%$). 4. The IVM rate of oocytes cultured for 48 hrs in NCSU-23 media supplement with 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mM myo-inositol were $50.0{\pm}4.5%,\;62.5{\pm}4.2%,\;52.5{\pm}4.9%,\;45.0{\pm}4.2%$, respectively. The IVM rate of oocytes in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 10 mM cysteine were significantly increased compared to control ($42.5{\pm}4.0%$).

Nutritional Characteristics and Quality Changes of Duck By-products During Frozen Storage at -20℃ (오리 부산물 종류별 영양학적 특성 및 냉동저장 (-20℃)에 따른 품질변화)

  • The objective of this study is to increase the utilization of duck by-products. The nutritional characteristics of four kinds of duck by-products (liver, heart, gizzard, and feet) were determined. The quality changes of four kinds of duck by-products were evaluated during frozen storage at $-20^{\circ}C$. The crude protein and cholesterol contents showed the highest level in liver while the crude fat content was determined to be the highest content in feet at 13.90%, and lowest in gizzard at 0.57%. Duck by-products contained USFA in the range of 48.69-77.66%, and the highest level in feet (p<0.05). During storage of duck by-products at $-20^{\circ}C$, the pH of duck by-products was in the range of 6.24-7.15, and there were no significant differences during the 4 mon storage period at $-20^{\circ}C$. Microbial counts of duck by-products except the gizzard were decreased significantly as storage time elapsed. In the sensory evaluation, overall acceptability of by-products (liver, heart, gizzard and feet) showed a tendency of decreasing value through storage, because off-flavor was increased with increased storage. Considering the combined results, one can conclude that duck by-products provide a good source of protein, and it was judged that the use of raw meat would be most appropriate within 3 mon of frozen storage.
