  • A rapid and simple test to distinguish halloysite from kaolinite in mineral mixtures has been developed based on differences in the rate and extent of formamide intercalation. The results of quantitative analysis by formamide intercalation reaction GEC contained 90% of kaolin minerals, GEC contained of 86% of halloysite and GYK contained of 59% kaolinite. The extent of formamide intercalation by kaolinite was likely influenced by sample crystallinity.

  • In this work, we investigated kaolinite raw materials from China, Vietnam, and Seongju (Korea) used for the manufacture of porcelain products in Korea. According to chemical analysis results, for the kaolinites from Seongju, more feldspar components containing CaO, K2O, and Na2O are found than in those from China or Vietnam, of which the composition is close to that of pure kaolinite. Through X-ray Rietveld quantitative analysis, kaolinite and muscovite are found to be the main phases for all the raw materials. Halloysite, quartz, gibbsite, and andesine are found at more than 5% for KM-85 (China), LKC-60 (Vietnam), KC-009 (China), and WA (Seongju). Absorption rate is on order of LKC-60 < KC-009 < KM-85 < PA < WA, and the sample, sintered in reductive atmosphere, exhibits the lowest absorption rate. Comparing the color of the sintered samples, kaolinites of KM-85, LKC-60, and KC-009 (L*: 94 - 97%) show higher whiteness value than those of WA and PA (L*: 82 - 91%).

  • An investigation was conducted to find out formation and is mechanism of kaolinite from pyrophyllite under hydrothermal conditions. First, a pyropyllite sample from the Heenam district, Korea, was activated by heat-treating at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs. The kaolinite powder was successfully obtained by subjecting the dried feedstock to autoclaving at $200^{\circ}C$, 15atm, pH<1 for 5days with addition of 17.4mol/l $AlCl_3$. Evidently, the $AlCl_3$ addition as a mineralizer strongly promoted incorporation of $Al^{3+}$ ion into pyrophyllite structure which was subdequently converted into kaolinite. It also indicated that the formation of octahedral feed solution. The final pH of the solution was decreased to ~0.3. The transformation reaction was not noticeably accelerated when 10wt% natural kaolinite was added as the seeds, suggesting that the transformation was not reconstructional, but substitutional type.

  • When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.

  • Plate anchors are primarily used in the foundation construction of earth-supported and earth-retaining structures. In order to estimate uplift capacity as well as suction force of clay, model tests were peformed with respect to various embedment depths and two different moisture contents in the prepared saturated kaolinite. Further, suction effects on the ultimate uplift capacity, at the various embedment depths of anchor, were also taken into account. Test results show that ultimate uplift capacity including suction force increases from 4.2kg at H/D=1 upto 11.6kg at H/D=5 in K1 and from 2.3kg at H/D=1 upto 7.3kg at H/D=5 in K2 respectively. The ratio of $F_s/Q_n/$ decreases along with the increases in the embedment ratio. In general, mud suction force under the ultimate uplift capacity in kaolinite decreases or becomes constant along with the increase of the embedment ratio.

  • Coagulating effects of eco-friendly coagulant materials such as zeolite, kaolinite, loess and chitosan upon sewage sludge were evaluated. And coagulating effects of the mixtures of those materials and polymer (polyacrylamide) were also investigated. Coagulating efficiency of loess was higher than that of kaolinite and zeolite at the treatment levels of 2,500~50,000mg/L. Coagulating efficiencies of zeolite, kaolinite and loess at the treatment level of 20,000mg/L were lower than that of 1,000 mg/L of polymer, which meant that single application of those materials in real plant were not feasible. At the treatment level of 1,000 mg/L, coagulating efficiency of Chitosan was much lower than that of polymer, which also meant that single use of chitosan in real plant could be unrealistic because of its high price. However, the application of the mixture of 'polymer 80mg/L + kaolinite or loess 500 mg/L + chitosn 10mg/L' or the mixture of 'polymer 80mg/L + kaolinite or loess 500mg/L' was promising way for coagulating sewage sludge.

  • A low resistivity zone is found in many places such as a fractured fault zone, weathered zone and aquifer. The electrical resistivity is influenced mainly by pore fluid as well as the clay mineral types and contents, Hence, it is very important to understand the relationship between the electrical resistivity and clay contents associated with the low resistivity zone for geotechnical applications such as civil engineering. This study examines the characteristics of clay mineral types and contents to electrical resistivity through sample measurements, and proposes an expression relating the resistivity and clay content. The electrical resistivity is measured for an artificial agar specimen with clay minerals instead of a natural rock. The clay minerals used are Kaolinite and Montmorillonite. Montmorillonite shows remarkably lower resistivity than Kaolinite, although its clay content is fewer than that of Kaolinite. Also, the proposed expression shows a good correlation coefficient as high as 0.89 or more in all clay minerals.

  • To study phosphate adsorption on kaolinite, $^{31}$ P MAS NMR(magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy)has been used for kaolinite reacted in 0.1 M phosphate solutions at pH’s from 3 to 11. There are at least 3 different forms of phosphate on kaolinite. One is the phosphate physically adsorbed on kaolinite surface (outer-sphere complexes) or species left after vacuum-filtering. The second is the phosphate adsorbed by ligand exchange (inner-sphere complexes), and the third is Al-phosphate precipitates which are pH dependent. Most of the inner-spherer complexes and surface precipitates are mainly on hydroxided Al(aluminol) rather than hydroxided Si(silanol). These are pertinent with the results obtained from the phosphate adsorption experiments on silica gel and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ as model compounds, respectively. The two peaks with more negative chemical shifts(more shielded) than the ortho-phosphate peak (positive chemical shift) are assigned to be the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates. The $^{31}$ P chemical shifts of the Al-phosphate precipitates are more negative than those of inner-sphere complexes at a given pH due to the larger number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron. The chemical shifts of both the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates are more negative than those of inner-sphere complexes at a given pH due to the larger number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron. The chemical shifts of both the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates become progressively less shielded with increasing pH. For the inner-sphere complexes, decreasing phosphate protonation combined with peak averaging by rapid proton exchange among phosphate tetrahedra with different numbers of protons is though to be the reason for the peak change. The decreasing shielding with increasing pH for surface precipitates is probably due to the decreasing average number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron combined with decreasing protonation like inner-sphere complexes.

  • The characteristics of phosphate desorption on kaolinite was studied by batch adsorptiondesorption experiments. Desorption procedure was carried out through sequential extraction method at pH 4. The phosphorous contents were measured using UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer with 820 nm wavelength. The adsorption-desorption reaction of P on kaolinite was irreversible, and most of adsorbed P on kaolinite were not easily dissolved to aqueous solution, but may might be fixed on kaolinite surface. The desorption isotherms were well fitted with the Freundlich and Temkin equations in the case of short reaction and long reaction time, respectively. The desorption reaction was divided into the early fast reaction and the later slow reaction. The percentage of desorption generally decreased with increasing adsorbed P concentration and increasing desorption reaction time.

  • This study considers to electrical resistivity characteristics for clay minerals types and contents in fractured and fault zone. The electrical resistivity is measured for an artificial agar specimen with clay minerals instead of a natural rock. The artificial agar specimen with clay minerals was special worked in study. The clay minerals used are Kaolinite and Montmorillonite in test, the clay mineral contents increases until $0\~40\%$ to the same specimen. As results, the electrical resistivity of the specimen decreased gradually as the clay mineral contents increases for all types of clay minerals. Montmorillonite shows remarkably lower resistivity than Kaolinite, although its clay content is fewer than that of Kaolinite. Also, a proposed experimental expression shows a good correlation coefficient as high as 0.89 or more in all clay minerals.
