  • After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated with $Sr^{2+}$ ion. the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. In the first experiment. NaCl solution was used as an electrolyte to raise the electric field strength. After remediation for 0.8 days. the pH of the cathode side of the soil column was elevated from 4.0 to 11.7. and thereby precipitation $Sr(OH)_2$, started to be formed in the side. Therefore. efficiency of soil remediation was reduced significantly and the 32% of total $Sr^{2+}$ ion in the column was decontaminated in 6.7 days. In the second experiment. ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and $CH_3COOH$ was continuously inputted in cathode reservoir to restrain the pH elevation. The pH of the cathode side of the soil column was only ascended from 4.0 to 6.0 in 3.8 days and $Sr(OH)_2$ was not formed. The 21% of total $Sr^{2+}$ in the soil column was decontaminated in 0.6 days. and the 33% of total $Sr^{2+}$ in 0.9 days. and the 84% of total $Sr^{2+}$ in 1.6 days. and the 92% of total $Sr^{2+}$ in 2.5 days. and the 97% of total $Sr^{2+}$ in 3.8 days. Meanwhile. the residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment.

  • The pellets from a culture of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) that were submerged shaken were disintegrated into numerous hyphal fragments by DNase treatment. The pellets were increasingly dispersed by hyaluronidase treatment, and mycelial fragments were easily detached from the pellets. The submerged mycelium grew by forming complexes with calcium phosphate precipitates or kaolin, a soil particle. Therefore, the pellet formation of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) can be considered a biofilm formation, including the participation of adhesive extracellular polymers and the insoluble substrates.

  • A number of batch isotherm and electrokinetic experiments were conducted in order to investigate the migration of zinc and its removal efficiency during electrokinetic soil processing. Sorption and desorption characteristics of zinc spiked kaolin clay have been examined by comparison with electrically induced desorption and precipitation occurring in the anode and cathode regions, respectively. The removal efficiency of zinc under the applied voltage gradient of 300 V/m was found to be up to approximately 80 % within 4 hours of the electrokinetic treatment. The study is significant with respect to the remediation of contaminated areas.

  • After kaolin clay was artificially contaminated with Co$^{2+}$ ion, the remediation characteristics were analyzed by the electrokinetic method. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and $CH_3$COOH was continuously inputted to the cathode reservoir to restrain the pH increase. Since the pH of the cathode side of the soil column was 4.0 initially and increased to only 6.5 after remediation for 43.6 hours, precipitate, Co(OH)$_2$, was not formed in the column. The effluent rate increased with the passage of time and Co$^{2+}$ removal in the column at the initial time were mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of the total amount of Co$^{2+}$ in the soil column was removed in 10 hours, 46.8% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 20.8 hours, 71.7% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 30.1 hours, and 94.6% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 43.6 hours. Meanwhile, residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment. experiment.

  • Cone and T-bar penetrometers have been frequently used to estimate the undrained shear strength of clay. For small-size model tests, miniature penetrometers should be used but their correlation factors have not been well published. In this study, a testing setup was developed to derive empirical factors of the miniature cone and T-bar penetrometers. A 350mm-diameter chamber and kaolin clay were utilized to prepare soil specimens consolidated under four different pre-consolidation pressures controlling undrained shear strength. Two miniature cones with two diameters of 10-mm and 16-mm and a T-bar penetrometer with 10-mm diameter were used to investigate boundary effect, penetration rate effect, and diameter and shape effect. Unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests were carried out with samples taken from the specimens to measure undrained shear strength. Finally, empirical factors for the penetrometers were constructed to correlate tip resistance to undrained shear strength.

  • Coastal and offshore structures such as ports and offshore wind farms will often need to be built on fine-grained sediments. Geotechnical properties associated with sediment compressibility are key parameters for marine construction designs especially on soft grounds, which involve clay-mineral dominated fines that can consolidate and settle significantly in response to engineered and environmental loads. We conduct liquid limit tests and 1D consolidation tests with fine-grained soils (silica silt, mica, kaolin and bentonite) and biogenic soils (diatom). The pore fluids for the liquid limit tests include deionized water and a series of brines with NaCl salt concentrations of 0.001 m, 0.01 m, 0.1 m, 0.6 m and 2.0 m, and the pore fluids for the consolidation tests deionized water, 0.01 m, 0.6 m, 2 m. The salt concentrations help the liquid limits of kaolin and bentonite decrease, but those of diatom slightly increase. The silica silt and mica show minimal changes in liquid limit due to salt concentrations. Accordingly, compression indices of soils follow the trend of the liquid limit as the liquid limit determined the initial void ratio of the consolidation test. Diatoms are more likely to be broken than clastic sediments during to loading, and diatom-rich sediment is therefore generally more compressible than clastic-rich sediment.

  • Ground improvement technique of cement stabilization via Deep Soil Mixing with dry cement is gaining popularity, particularly in Japan and other parts of Southeast Asia and in Scandinavia. Cement can be mixed with deep soft clay deposits, typical of marine environments, to improve the bearing capacity and/or reduce the compressibility of the material so that an otherwise poor site can be developed. However, the strength/deformation behaviour and resulting soil structure of the clay-cement mixture is presently not well understood with respect to both dry and wet mix methods. An extensive laboratory test was carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of kaolin-cement, with some brief examination of the effects of curing environment. Laboratory tests include triaxial tests, unconfined compression tests, isotropic consolidation testis and oedometer tests. Cement contents up to 10 percent were considered and water curing was employed. Samples were cured for 7 to 112 days while submerged in distilled water. Conventional laboratory tests were also performed. In this paper, the laboratory testing program is described and various sample preparation techniques are discussed. Preliminary triaxial compression test results and trends at varying moisture contents, cement contents, confining pressures and curing times will be presented.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression testes were performed to increase field applications of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected and auto cutter was used to obtain reliable length of fibers. Remolded soil specimens were tested for obtaining the basic data to be applied to the reinforcement of soft clay, embankment or barrier and clay liner of wastes landfill etc. Conversion equations from weight to volume of clay mixed with short fiber are introduced and relationships between fiber content and fiber concentration are derived. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure increases. The best efficient reinforcing effect is given at the aspect ratio of 80~120 and the fiber content of 1.2%~2.4% and the fiber diameter of 0.27mm.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests for compacted short fiber reinforced clay were performed to increase the field applications, e.g. retaining wall, waste landfill, soft ground etc. of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected. To acquire reliable length of fibers, an auto cutter was used and a helical mixer was also used to avoid floating of fibers during mixing soil and fibers. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure is increased. Reinforcing effect has a maximum value at the aspect ratio of 120 and the fiber content of 0.6%∼1.2% and low confining pressure like 50kPa.
