  • The effects of interface boundary strength on wear and wear transition during sliding have been investigated in silicon carbide ceramics. Three different microstructures, i.e., solid state sintered silicon carbide, liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and liquid phase sintered silicon carbide composite reinforced with TiB$_{2}$ particulates, were designed by hot pressing. Examinations of crack patterns and fracture modes indicated that interface boundaries were relatively strong between silicon carbide grains in the solid state sintered silicon carbide, intermediate in the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and weak between silicon carbide grains and TiB$_{2}$ particles in the composite. Wear data and examinations of worn surfaces revealed that the wear behavior of these silicon carbide ceramics could be significantly affected by the interface strength. In the solid state sintered silicon carbide, the wear occurred by a grooving process. In the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and composite, on the other hand, an abrupt transition in wear mechanism from initial grooving to grain pull-out process occurred during the test. The transition occurred significantly earlier in the composite than in the carbide.

  • A study has been investigated on the effect of mechanical properties (tension strength, rotary bending fatigue strength, wear resistance, hardness) according to the carbide particle size variation by the treatment of 1) quenching tempering, and 2) quenching, subzero treatment and tempering. The material used in this investigation was a typical bearing steel, high C high Cr, AISI E 52100. The result obtained in this study were as follows : (1) Finer the carbide particle size increasing the hardness and retained austenite in same quenching condition. (2) Finer the carbide particle size reduced the tension and rotary bending fatigue which were resulted from austenite grain growth and carbide precipitation on grain boundry that induced by carbide refine heat treatment. (3) Finer the carbide particel size increasing the wear resistance which were resulted by uniform distribution of carbide and increased hardness induced by microstructural uniform hardenability of matrix. (4) When the carbide particles were refinded, subzero treatment is effective only wear resistance and hardness.

  • Occupational exposure to silicon carbide dust of manufacturing industries has seldom been evaluated in Korea. Accordingly, we evaluated various silicon carbide dust concentrations in the breathing zone of workers between May 2010 and July 2010. To compare silicon carbide dust concentrations, three dust samplers including the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) sampler, 37mm cassette sampler, and Aluminum cyclone sampler were used. A total of 5 manufacturing industries producing abrasive and refractory materials using silicon carbide were investigated. The geometric mean concentrations were 2.04, 0.97, and $0.48mg/m^3$ in inhalable, total and respirable silicon carbide dust, respectively. The geometric mean concentrations of silicon carbide in abrasive material manufacturing industries were slightly higher than that of refractory manufacturing industries, and finishing operations were higher than that of other operations. It was found that the results of exposure assessment in airborne dust at manufacturing industries using silicon carbide in Korea showed exceeding rate to American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Value ($3mg/m^3$) was 10% in respirable dust samples. Therefore, with the consideration of the close relationship between smaller dust size and the occurrence of occupational respiratory diseases, it is suggested to promulgate the new occupational exposure limit for respirable silicon carbide dust.

  • Directional solidification experiments were carried out at 0.5-150 $\mu\textrm{m}$/s in the Co-base superalloy ECY 768. As increasing solidification rate, the dendrite length increased and it reached the maximum at 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$/s, where the tip temperature is close to the liquidus. The liquidus and eutectic temperatures could be estimated by comparing the dendrite lengths and the temperature gradients at the solid/liquid interface and those were estimated as $1424.6^{\circ}C$ and $1343^{\circ}C$ respectively. Between the dendrites just below final freezing temperature, MC carbide and $M_{23}$$C_{6}$ carbide were found. It was confirmed that the script or blocky shape was Ta or W-rich MC carbide, and the lamellar shape was Cr-rich eutectic carbide. The solid/liquid interface morphology clearly showed that the Cr-rich eutectic carbide formed just after the script type MC carbide.

  • The effect of chemical constituents of $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase on its hardness in the chromium-carbide type Cr white iron hardfacing weld deposits has been investigated. In order to examine $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase, a series of filler metals with varying chromium contents was used. The alloys were deposited once or twice on a mild steel plate using the self?shielding flux cored arc welding process. The hardness of $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase was measured by the micro-Vickers hardness test. It was shown that hardness of $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase increased with increasing Cr content in $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase. This behavior of the hardness of $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase was explained by the types of chemical bonds that hold atoms together in $(Cr,\;Fe)_7C_3$ carbide phase.

  • The effect of cooling rate on carbide precipitation during quenching of austenitic manganese steel was investigated by optical microscopy, image analyzer and numerical analysis. A computer program based on the finite difference method for analyzing heat treatment processes was developed in order to evaluate cooling rates and the possibility of carbide precipitation during quenching. The area ratio of carbide precipitated in the austenite matrix was measured by the image analyzer, and used to determine the critical point of carbide precipitation. Temperature-dependent critical cooling rates at the critical points were calculated using the present simulation program, The calculated results showed a good agreement with the experimental ones.

  • The effects of microstructure on fretting wear were investigated in Inconel 690 tube. The microstructure observation indicated that the solution annealing temperature and time affected the grain size of the Inconel 690 tubes. The carbide morphology, along grain boundaries, was mainly affected by thermal treatment time and temperature. The wear test results showed that specimens with larger grain size and with coarse carbides along grain boundaries had better wear resistance. Cracks were found in specimens with carbides along the grain boundary, while few cracks were found in carbide free specimens. It seemed that the carbides on grain boundary assisted crack formation and propagation in carbide containing specimens. On the other hand, the micro-hardness of specimen did not have a major role in fretting wear. It could be inferred from the SEM images of worn surfaces that the main wear mechanism of carbide containing specimen was delamination, while that of carbide free specimen was abrasion.

  • The mechanical properties of silicon carbide deposited by chemical vapor deposition process onto a graphite substrate are studied using nanoindentation techniques. The silicon carbide coating was fabricated in a chemical vapor deposition process with different microstructures and thicknesses. A nanoindentation technique is preferred because it provides a reliable means to measure the mechanical properties with continuous load-displacement recording. Thus, a detailed nanoindentation study of silicon carbide coatings on graphite structures was conducted using a specialized specimen preparation technique. The mechanical properties of the modulus, hardness and toughness were characterized. Silicon carbide deposited at $1300^{\circ}C$ has the following values: E=316 GPa, H=29 GPa, and $K_c$=9.8 MPa $m^{1/2}$; additionally, silicon carbide deposited at $1350^{\circ}C$ shows E=283 GPa, H=23 GPa, and $K_c$=6.1 MPa $m^{1/2}$. The mechanical properties of two grades of SiC coating with different microstructures and thicknesses are discussed.

  • The HSS consists of hard carbide and matrix of martensite, and so its characteristics of wear resistance, fracture resistance, and surface roughness are good. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of Nb and V and manufacturing conditions on microstructural behaviors and characteristics in the HSS cylindrical specimens(90 $mm^{O.D.}$ ${\times}$ 60 $mm^{I.D.}$ ${\times}$ 50 $mm^H$) manufactured using VCC(Vertical Centrifugal Casting). In the specimen of Fe-2C-6Cr-1.5W-3Mo-4V alloy, the amount of MC carbide was increased and $M_7C_3$ carbide was decreased with the increase of V and Nb contents. The primary VC carbide was formed and followed by the rod-type eutectic MC carbide was formed in the cell boundary in 9%V added specimen. MC carbide was increased, and $M_7C_3$ carbide was decreased with the addition of Nb content. In the specimen containing more than 3%Nb, primary NbC carbide was formed within the cell of matrix. With increase in rpm, cell and carbides became fine, and amount of carbide $M_7C_3$ was decreased due to increase in cooling rate.
