The unsteady supersonic flow over tandem cavities has been analyzed by the integration of Navier-Stokes equations with the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in cavities. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the van Leer limiters is used. The results show the principal frequency is very reasonable. The principal frequency of the rear cavity due to the front cavity has been analyzed by the combination of the several aspect ratios of cavities. In the case of the front cavity of low aspect ratio, the frequencies of tandem cavities are almost same, because two shear layers developed from each cavity are mixed and developed to one shear layer. However, in the case of the front cavity of high aspect ratio, the characteristis of frequency are very different, because the second shear layer is developed in the diffused first shear layer.

A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.

Numerical calculations are carried out for the swirling turbulent flow in a pipe. Calculations are made for the flow with swirl parameter of 2.25 and the Reynolds number of 24,300. The turbulence closure models used in these calculations are two different types of Reynolds stress model, and the results are compared with those of $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the experimental data. The finite volume method is used for the discretization, and the power-law scheme is employed as a numerical scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is used for velocity-pressure correction. The computational results show that GL model gives the results better than those of SSG model in the predictions of velocity and stress components.
In engine room, proper enclosure system is preferable for reducing noise level but the enclosure system in the engine room causes bad influence on cooling performance due to poor ventilation. Cooling efficiency of the enclosure system can be improved by varying fan speed and proper flow path for ventilation. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to assess cooling effect of the enclosure system using finite volume method. The RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model is adopted for turbulence model along with heat exchanger model and porous media model for heat exchanger analysis, and moving reference frame model for rotational fan. Verification result shows reasonable agreement with experimental data. Analysis results show direct effect of velocity and temperature distribution on cooling ability in the enclosure system. Enclosure system of case B shows high heat transfer coefficient and has the smallest area ratio of opened flow passages which is good for noise level reduction.
An Euler-Lagrange two-phase flow model is presented fur simulation sheet-flow transport under wave and current. The flow is computed by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation in conjunction with the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model for turbulence closure. The sediment transport is introduced as a motion of granular media under the action of unsteady flow from the Lagragian point of view. In other word, motion of every single particle is numerically traced with Movable Bed Simulator (MBS) code based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM), in which the frequent interparticle collision of the moving particles during the sheet-flow transport is sophisticatedly taken into account. The particle diameter effect on time-dependent developing process of sheet-flow transport is investigated, by using three different diameter sizes of sediment. The influence of an imposed current on oscillatory sheet-flow transport is also investigated. It is concluded that the sediment transport rate increases due to the relaxation process related to the time-lag between flow velocity and sediment motion.
Density currents have been easily observed in environmental flows, for instance turbidity currents and pollutant plumes in the oceans and rivers. In this study, we explored the propagation dynamics of density currents using the FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme, a turbulence numerical technique, is employed in a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (RANS). The numerical simulations focused on two different types of intrusive density flows: (1) propagating into a two-layer ambient fluid; (2) propagating into a linearly stratified fluid. In the study of intrusive density flows into a two-layer ambient fluid, intrusive speeds were compared with laboratory experiments and analytical solutions. The numerical model shows good quantitative agreement for predicting propagation speed of the density currents. We also numerically reproduced the effect of the ratio of current depth to the overall depth of fluid. The numerical model provided excellent agreement with the analytical values. It was also clearly demonstrated that RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme within RANS framework is able to accurately simulate the dynamics of density currents. Simulations intruding into a continuously stratified fluid with the various buoyancy frequencies are carried out. These simulations demonstrate that three different propagation patterns can be developed according to the value of $h_n/H$ : (1) underflows developed with $h_n/H=0$ ; (2) overflows developed when $h_n/H=1$ ; (3) intrusive interflow occurred with the condition of 0 < $h_n/H$ < 1.

3-D numerical studies are performed to investigate the effect of the trunk height and approaching air velocities on the pressure distribution of notchback road vehicle. For this purpose, the models of test vehicle with four different trunk heights are introduced and PHOENICS, a commercial CFD code, is used to simulate the flow phenomena and to estimate the values of pressure coefficients along the surface of vehicle. The standard k-$\xi$ model is adopted for the simulation of turbulence. The numerical results say that the height variation of trunk makes almost no influence on the distribution of the value of pressure coefficient along upper surface but makes very strong effects on the rear surface. That is, the value of pressure coefficient becomes smaller as the height is increased along the rear surface and the bottom surface. Approaching air velocity make no differences on pressure coefficients. Through the analysis of pressure coefficient on the vehicle surfaces one tried to assess aerodynamic drag and lift of vehicle. The pressure distribution on the rear surface affected more on drag and lift than pressure distribution on the front surface of the vehicle does. The increase of trunk height makes positive effects on the lift decrease but negative effects on drag reduction.
In order to analyze the heat transfer phenomena in the plasma flames, a mathematical model describing heat and fluid How in an electric arc has been developed and used to predict heat transfer from the arc to the steel bath in a DC Electric Arc Furnace. The arc model takes the separate contributions to the heat transfer from each involved mechanism into account, i.e. radiation, convection and energy transported by electrons. The finite volume method and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing MHD equations, i.e., conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy together with the equations describing a standard $k-\varepsilon$ model for turbulence. The model predicts heat transfer for different currents and arc lengths. Finally these calculation results can be used as a useful insight into plasma phenomena of the industrial-scale electric arc furnace. from these results, it can be concluded that higher arc current and longer arc length give high heat transfer.

The flow and heat transfer characteristics inside a solar chimney power plant system are analyzed in this article. 3-D model with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure was developed. In this model, to solve the radiative transfer equation the discrete ordinates radiation model was implemented, using a two-band radiation model. To simulate radiation effects from the sun's rays, the solar ray tracing algorithm was coupled to the calculation via a source term in the energy equation. Simulations were carried out for a system with the geometry parameters of the Manzanares power plant. Based on the numerical results, the velocity and temperature distributions were illustrated and the results were validated by comparing with experimental data of the Manzanares prototype power plant. Moreover, temperature profile of the ground surface of the system was illustrated.
