A new full scale testing apparatus generically named the Wall of Wind (WoW) has been built by the researchers at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at Florida International University (FIU). WoW is capable of testing single story building models subjected up to category 3 hurricane wind speeds. Depending on the relative model and WoW wind field sizes, testing may entail blockage issues. In addition, the proximity of the test building to the wind simulator may also affect the aerodynamic data. This study focuses on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assessment of the effects on the quality of the aerodynamic data of (i) blockage due to model buildings of various sizes and (ii) wind simulator proximity for various distances between the wind simulator and the test building. The test buildings were assumed to have simple parallelepiped shapes. The computer simulations were performed under both finite WoW wind-field conditions and in an extended Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) wind flow. Mean pressure coefficients for the roof and the windward and leeward walls served as measures of the blockage and wind simulator proximity effects. The study uses the commercial software FLUENT with Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations and a Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results indicated that for larger size test specimens (i.e. for cases where the height of test specimen is larger than one third of the wind field height) blockage correction may become necessary. The test specimen should also be placed at a distance greater than twice the height of the test specimen from the fans to reduce proximity effect.
This paper describes the smoke movement of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP(Smoke Movement Estimating Program) code to the simulation of fire induced flows in the two types of compartment space containing the radiation effect under smoke movement in room fire. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon $ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown reasonable agreement compared with the experimental data. On the other hand, a difference of a lot was found between the temperature predicted by the SMEP with only convection effect and obtained by the experimental result. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire may be necessary in order to produce more realistic result.

This paper is concerned with the development of a three-dimensional numerical model for coastal circulation and heat transport with improved prediction ability. The model uses fully nonlinear, time-dependent three-dimensional, $\sigma$-transformed equations of motion and equation of heat transport The model was verified with experimental data for wind-driven current in a one-dimensional channel and thermal jets flowing into stagnant waters and applied for unsteady flow induced by tide and thermal jets in coastal waters around Kori nuclear power plant. The model results were in good agreements with experimental data sets for wind-driven current and thermal jet, and field observed data sets in coastal waters. This study has shown that the $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is applicable to various coastal conditions without any modification of turbulence constants.

Industrial ejector system is a facility to transport, to compress or to pump out a low pressure secondary flow by using a high pressure primary flow. An advantage of the ejector system is in its geometrical simplicity, not having any moving part, compared with other fluid machinery. Most of the previous works have been performed experimentally and analytically. The obtained data. are too insufficient to improve our current understanding on the detailed flow field inside the ejector. In order to provide more comprehensive data on this ejector flow field, two-dimensional computations using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were performed for a very wide range of operating pressure ratio of the supersonic ejector with a secondary throat. The current results showed that the supersonic ejector system has an optimum pressure ratio for the secondary flow total pressure to be minimized. The numerical results clearly revealed the shock system, shock/boundary layer interaction, and secondary flow entrainment inside the supersonic ejector.

As operating frequency is raised and as more integration with active and passive elements is required, it becomes difficult to fabricate more than 120 ${\Omega}$ characteristic impedance of a mierostrip line. To solve this problem, an equivalent high impedance transmission-line section is suggested, which consists mainly of a pair of coupled-line sections with two shorts. However, it becomes a transmission-line section only when its electrical length is fixed and its coupling power is more than half. To have transmission-line characteristics(perfect matching), independently of coupling power and electrical length, two identical open stubs are added and conventional design equations of evenand odd-mode impedances are modified, based on the fact that the modified design equations have the linear combinations of conventional ones. The high impedance transmission-line section is a passive component and therefore should be perfectly matched, at least at a design center frequency. For this, two different solutions are derived for the added open stub and two types of high impedance transmission-line sections with 160 ${\Omega}$ characteristic impedance are simulated as the electrical lengths of the coupled-line sections are varied. The simulation results show that the determination of the available bandwidth location depends on which solution is chosen. As an application, branch-line hybrids with very weak coupling power are investigated, depending on where an isolated port is located, and two types of branch-line hybrids are derived for each case. To verify the derived branch-line hybrids, a microstrip branch-line hybrid with -15 dB coupling power, composed of two 90$^{\circ}$ and two 270$^{\circ}$ transmission-line sections, is fabricated on a substrate of ${\varepsilon}_r$= 3.4 and h=0.76 mm and measured. In this case, 276.7 ${\Omega}$ characteristic impedance is fabricated using the suggested high impedance transmission-line sections. The measured coupling power is -14.5 dB, isolation and matching is almost perfect at a design center frequency of 2 GHz, showing good agreement with the prediction.
The objective of this study is to investigate numerically the effect of building roof shaps on wind flow and pollutant dispersion in a street canyon with one row of trees of pore volume, $P_{vol}=96%$. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to evaluate air flow and pollutant dispersion within an urban street canyon using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM) based on k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to close the equation system. The numerical model is performed with ANSYS-CFX code. Vehicle emissions were simulated as double line sources along the street. The numerical model was validated by the wind tunnel experiment results. Having established this, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons (with six roof shapes buildings) are simulated. The numerical simulation results agree reasonably with the wind tunnel data. The results obtained in this work, indicate that the flow in 3D domain is more complicated; this complexity is increased with the presence of trees and variability of the roof shapes. The results also indicated that the largest pollutant concentration level for two walls (leeward and windward wall) is observed with the upwind wedge-shaped roof. But the smallest pollutant concentration level is observed with the dome roof-shaped.
In this study, a 40 GHz band pass filter(BPF) employing a hair-pin structure has been designed, fabricated, and characterized for millimeter-wave wireless communication applications. Using the 3 dimensional(3-D) electromagnetic(EM) tool and design equations of the hairpin BPF, the BPF was desgned on the 5 mil-thick Duroid substrate(RT5880) with a relative dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) of 2.2. The tapping point (t) of the U-shape resonator in the input and output port has been determined using extracted an external Q-factor ($Q_e$). The coupling coefficients between the other resonators are calculated by adjusting the physical dimensions for the desired response of the BPF. The fabricated BPF was characterized using probing method on a probe station. Its measured center frequency(fc) and fractional BW are 41.6 GHz and 7.43 %, respectively. The measured return loss is below -10 dB at the pass band and the insertion loss is 3.87 dB. The fabricated BPF is as small as $9.1{\times}2.8mm^2$.
A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.
Background: Heat recovery is one of the prominent ways to save a considerable amount of conventional fossil fuel and minimize its adverse effects on the environment. The rotary heat exchanger is one of the most effective and efficient devices for heat recovery or heat exchanging purposes. It is a regenerative type of heat exchanger, which has been studied and used for many heat recovery purposes. However, regenerative thermal wheels have been mostly used as heat recovery systems in buildings. For modeling a rotary regenerator, it is very important to numerically consider all the factors involved, such as effectiveness, rotational speed, geometrical size and shape, and pressure drop (${\Delta}p$). In recent times, several researchers have actively studied the rotary heat exchangers, both theoretically and experimentally. Reviews: In this paper different advances in the numerical modeling of regenerative rotary heat exchangers in relation to fluid flow and heat transfer have been discussed. Researchers have indicated that the effectiveness of the regenerative rotary heat exchanger depends on various factors including, among many others, rotational speed, rotational period and combustion power. It is reported that with the increase of periodic rotation the deviation of theoretical results from the experimental result increases. The available literature indicates that regenerative heat exchangers are having relatively more effectiveness (60-80%), compared to other heat exchangers. It is also observed that the finite difference method and finite volume methods are mostly used for discretizing the heat transfer governing equations, under some assumptions. Research also indicates that for the effectiveness calculation the ${\varepsilon}-NTU$ method is the most popular and convenient.
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a solid-liquid separation process that uses fine rising bubbles to remove particles in water. Most of particle-bubble collision occurs in the DAF contact zone. This initial contact considered by the researchers to play a important role for DAF performance. It is hard to make up conceptual model through simple mass balance for estimating collision efficiency in the contact zone because coupled behavior of the solid-liquid-gas phase in DAF system is 90 complicate. In this study, 2-phase(gas-liquid) flow equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and turbulence quantities were solved using an Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on the assumption that very small particle is applied in the DAF system. For the modeling of turbulent 2-phase flow in the reactor, the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ mode I(liquid phase) and zero-equation(gas phase) were used in CFD code because it is widely accepted and the coefficients for the model are well established. Particle-bubble collision efficiency was calculated using predicted turbulent energy dissipation rate and gas volume fraction. As the result of this study, the authors concluded that bubble size and recycle ratio play important role for flow pattern change in the reactor. Predicted collision efficiency using CFD showed good agreement with measured removal efficiency in the contact zone. Also, simulation results indicated that collision efficiency at 15% recycle ratio is higher than that of 10% and showed increasing tendency of the collision efficiency according to the decrease of the bubble size.
