The interaction of turbulent mixed convection and surface radiation in a three-dimensional channel with the heated blocks is analyzed numerically. Two blocks are maintained at high temperature and the other bottom and horizontal walls are insulated. S-4 method is employed to calculate the effect of the radiative heat transfer. The low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model proposed by Launder and Sharma is used to estimate the turbulent influence on the heat transfer enhancement. From above modeling, the effects of various channel specifications on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The variables used for the present study are Reynolds number, block spacing, the channel height spacing for block and the emissivity. Average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are correlated and presented in terms of Reynolds number, emissivity and dimensionless geometric parameters. For the range of conditions in this study, average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are strongly influenced by the Reynolds numbers and channel height spacing for block but weakly influenced by the block spacing and the emissivity of the adiabatic walls.

The viscous free surface flow around KRISO container ship (KCS) is computed using the finite volume based multi block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO. The free surface is captured with the Level-Set method and the realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed for turbulence closure. The computations are carried out at model scale. For accurate free surface solution and its stable convergence the computations are performed with a suitable grid refinement around the free surface by applying an implicit discretization method based on a finite volume method to the Level-Set formulation. In all computational cases the numerical results agree well with experimental measurements.
In general the swirl jet is generated by the injected flow that is forced to the tangential direction. A spiral nozzle which is composed of an annular slit and a convergent nozzle, is released the spiral jet that is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit. The objective of the present study is to investigate the additional study that is studied a changed the convergent nozzle angle and nozzle length. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The convergent nozzle angle and the nozzle length of the spiral nozzle are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained show that the convergent nozzle angle and the nozzle length of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as a tangential and a jet width.
A general purpose program NUFLEX for the analysis 3-D thermo/fluid flow and pre/post processor in complex geometry has been developed, which consists of a flow solver based on FVM and GUI based pre/post processor. The solver employs a general non-orthogonal grid system with structured grid and solves laminar and turbulent flows with standard/RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. In addition, NUFLEX is incorporated with various physical models, such as interfacial tracking, cavitation, MHD, melting/solidification and spray models. For the purpose of evaluation of the program and testing the applicability, many actual problems are solved and compared with the available data. Comparison of the results with that by STAR-CD or FLUENT program has been also made for the same flow configuration and grid structure to test the validity of NUFLEX.

In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system (ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system (RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, thermal stratification phenomenon can occur due to coolant leaking in the check valve. The thermal stratification produces excessive thermal stresses at the pipe wall so as to yield thermal fatigue crack (TFC) accident. In the present study, effects of turbulence penetration on the thermal stratification into T-branches with square cross-section in the modeled ECCS are analysed numerically. $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model is employed to calculate the Reynolds stresses in momentum equations. Results show that the length and strength of thermal stratification are primarily affected by the leak flow rate of coolant and the Reynolds number of the main flow in the duct. Turbulence penetration into the T-branch of ECCS shows two counteracting effects on the thermal stratification. Heat transport by turbulence penetration from the main duct to leaking flow region may enhance thermal stratification while the turbulent diffusion may weaken it.

Modeling swirling wakes is of considerable interest to wind farm designers. The present work is an attempt to develop a computational tool to understand free, far-wake development behind a single rotating wind turbine. Besides the standard momentum and continuity equations from the boundary layer theory in two dimensions, an additional equation for the conservation of angular momentum is introduced to study axisymmetric swirl effects on wake growth. Turbulence is simulated with two options: the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and the Reynolds Stress transport model. A finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations for mean flow and turbulence quantities. A marching algorithm of expanding grids is employed to enclose the growing far-wake and to solve the equations implicitly at every axial step. Axisymmetric far-wakes with/without swirl are studied at different Reynolds numbers and swirl numbers. Wake characteristics such as wake width, half radius, velocity profiles and pressure profiles are computed. Compared with the results obtained under similar flow conditions using the computational software, FLUENT, this far-wake model shows simplicity with acceptable accuracy, covering large wake regions in far-wake study.

A nonlinear low-Reynolds-number heat transfer model is developed to predict turbulent flow and heat transfer in separated and reattaching flows. The $k-{\varepsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model of Park and Sung (1997) is extended to a nonlinear formulation, based on the nonlinear model of Gatski and Speziale (1993). The limiting near-wall behavior is resolved by solving the $f_{\mu}$ elliptic relaxation equation. An improved explicit algebraic heat transfer model is proposed, which is achieved by applying a matrix inversion. The scalar heat fluxes are not aligned with the mean temperature gradients in separated and reattaching flows; a full diffusivity tensor model is required. The near-wall asymptotic behavior is incorporated into the $f_{\lambda}$ function in conjunction with the $f_{\mu}$ elliptic relaxation equation. Predictions of the present model are cross-checked with existing measurements and DNS data. The model preformance is shown to be satisfactory.
In order to analyze the sensitivity on the pulverized coal flames of the several variables, a numerical study was conducted at the gasification process. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas lagrangian approach is used for the solid phase. Turbulence is modeled using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The turbulent combustion incorporates eddy dissipation model. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step two-reaction model was employed for the devolatilization of Kideco coal. In pulverized flame of long liftoff height, the initial turbulent intensity seriously affects the position of flame front. The radiation heat transfer and wall heat loss ratio distort the temperature distributions along the reactor wall, but do not influence the reactor performance such as coal conversion, residence time and flame front position. The primary/secondary momentum ratio affects the position of flame front, but the coal burnout is only slightly influenced. The momentum ratio is a variable only associated with the flame stabilization such as flame front position. The addition of steam in the reactor has a detrimental effect on all the aspects, particularly reactor temperature and coal burnout.

This study presents the wave run-up height around single and multiple surface-piercing cylinders according to wave period and steepness. In order to simulate 3D incompressible viscous two-phase turbulent flow, the present study employed a volume of fluid (VOF) method with realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model based on commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, "STAR-CCM". The wave periods at model scale were 1.269s and 1.692s for a single cylinder and 1.716s for multiple cylinders. In each case, wave steepness of has 1/30 and 1/16 were used, respectively. Consequently, the results for wave run-up height with regard to wave steepness and period were compared with those of relevant previous experimental studies. The numerical simulation results showed a good qualitative agreement with experiments.
Accurate prediction of a supersonic missile base drag continues to defy even well-rounded CFD codes. In an effort to address the accuracy and predictability of the base drags, the influence of grid system and competitive turbulence models on the base drag is analyzed. Characteristics of some turbulence models is reviewed through incompressible turbulent flow over a flat plate, and performance for the base drag prediction of several turbulence models such as Baldwin-Loman(B-L), Spalart-Allmaras(S-A), k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ model is assessed. When compressibility correction is injected into the S-A model, prediction accuracy of the base drag is enhanced. The NSWC wind tunnel test data are utilized for comparison of CFD and semi-empirical codes on the accuracy of base drag predictability: they are about equal, but CFD tends to perform better. It is also found that, as angle of attack of a missile with control fins increases, even the best CFD analysis tool we have lacks the accuracy needed for the base drag prediction.
