  • Flow characteristics and contamination behavior in a three-dimensional room with the desk-type obstacle have been investigated numerically by the k-${\varepsilon}$ two equation turbulence model. The room model has one supply opening on the ceiling and two exhaust openings on the side walls. Thirty six sets of calculation have been performed for twelve contamination sources of $1{\times}10^{-4}kg_c/(m^3{\cdot}s)$ strength at different inlet velocities(0.1, 1, 10m/s). This study can conclude that the source points of contaminant are located near the obstacle edge of Z-axis, at which the maximum contaminant diffusion fields are occured.

  • In this paper, numerical simulation are conducted to predict the characteristics of the heat transfer and smoke flow and evacuation in the road tunnel. Fire source are used about 30 MW and the turbulent flow characteristics are considered by standard k-epsilon turbulent model. The effect of transient thermal behavior and disaster prevention can be used for designing the road tunnel.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of automobiles have received substantial interest recently. Detailed knowledge of the vehicle aerodynamics is essential to improve fuel efficiency and enhance stability at high-speed cruising. In this study, a numerical simulation has been carried out for three-dimensional turbulent flows around a commercial bus body. Also, the effect of rear-spoiler attached at rear end of bus body was investigated. The Wavier-Stokes equation is solved with SIMPLE method in general curvilinear coordinates system. RNG $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model with the MARS scheme was used for the evaluating aerodynamic forces, velocity and pressure distribution. The results showed details of the three-dimensional wake flow in the immediate rear of bus body and the effect of rear-spoiler on the wake structure. A maximum of 14% reduction in drag coefficient was achieved for a model with a rear-spoiler.

  • A numerical study of turbulent condensing vapor jet submerged in subcooled liquids has been conducted. A physical model of the process is presented employing the locally homogeneous flow approximation of two phase flow in conjunction with a $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$-g model of turbulence properties. In this model the turbulence is represented by differential equations for its kinetic energy and dissipation. A differential equation for the concentration fluctuations is solved and a clipped normal probability distribution function is proposed for the mixture fraction. Effects of steam mass flux, pool temperature and nozzle internal diameter on the condensing vapor jet are also analyzed. The model is evaluated using existing data for turbulent condensing vapor jets. The agreement between the predictions and the available experimental data is good.

  • A 1 : 20 laboratory scale test rig of a 200 MW tangentially fired boiler is built up with completely simulated structures such as platen heaters and burners. Iso-thermal turbulent flow in the boiler is mapped by 3-D PDA (Particle Dynamic Analyzer). The 3-D numerical models for the same case are proposed based on the solution of к-$\varepsilon$ model closed RANS (Reynolds time-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations, which are written in the framework of general coordinates and discretized in the corresponding body-fitted meshes. Not only are the grid lines arranged to fit the inner/outer boundaries. but also to align with the streamlines to the best possibility in order to reduce the NDE (numerical diffusion errors). Extensive comparisons of profiles of mean velocities are carried out between experiment and calculation. Predicted velocities in burner region were quantitatively similar with measured ones, while those in other area have same tendency with experimental counterpart.

  • Wind flow perturbations, recirculations and turbulence generated by buildings often dominate air pollutant distributions around buildings. This paper describes dispersion of contaminants in the vicinity of a building by solving the concentration equation based on previously simulated wind flow field. Turbulence closure is achieved by using the standard k-e two-equation model. The paper shows application of the CIP method for solving a species concentration equation of contaminant gas around a rectangular building for two different sources under conditions of neutral atmospheric stratification. Results have been compared to the experimental data and the previous numerical results by hybrid scheme. The computational results of concentration profiles by the CIP method agree well with experimental data.

  • Most of the domestic cold storage rooms are inefficient for agricultural products because of temperature gradients inside the storage rooms. Temperature gradients are developed mainly by improper airflow pattern inside the storage room, which is a main cause of the spoilage of the agricultural products. There proper airflow pattern is essential to minimize these temperature gradients and the spoilage. The performance and characteristics of a cold storage room were determined as a function of airflow pattern and temperature distribution in forced circulation cold storage room. A commercial CFD(computational fluid dynamics) code was used to simulate 3-D airflow in the cold storage room. Solving the flow equations for the storage room, a standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model was implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distribution. The CFD prediction results were compared with temperature measurements inside the cold storage room. In case of pallet storage, Temperature gradients inside pallet storage was reduced because the contact area of cold air expanded through an alley of airflow in storage. But is case of bulk storage, the last temperature of storage considerably rose more than the initial temperature of storage. The reason was that bulk storage didn't include any alley of airflow in storage.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the prediction accuracy of developed large eddy simulation (LES) program for complex turbulent flows, such as recirculating and swirling flows. To save the computational cost, a Beowulf cluster system consisting 16 processors was constructed. The flows in backward-facing step and dump combustor were examined as representative recirculating and swirling flows. Firstly, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) for laminar backward-facing step flows was previously conducted to validate the overall performance of program. Then LES was carried out for turbulent backward-facing step flows. The results of laminar flow showed a qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulations and experiments. The simulations of the turbulent flow also showed reasonable results. Secondly, LES results for non-swirling and swirling flows in a dump combustor were compared with the results of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) using standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The results show that LES has a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, comer recirculation zone (CRZ) and center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) than those of RANS. Finally, it was examined the capability of LES for the description of unsteady phenomena.

  • The seawater lift pump system is responsible for maintaining the open canal level to provide the suction flow of circulating water pump at the set point. The objective of this paper is to design a 2-stage mixed flow pump(for seawater lifting) by inverse design and to evaluate the overall performance and the local flow fields of the pump by using a commercial CFD code. Rotating speed of the impeller is 1,750 rpm with the flow rate of 2,700 $m^3/h$. Finite volume method with structured mesh and Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model is used to guaranty more accurate prediction of turbulent flow in the pump impeller. The numerical results such as static head brake horse power and efficiency of the mixed flow pump are compared with the reference data. Also, the periodic condition calculation method for the mixed flow pump was carried out in order to investigate the pump performance characteristics with the modification of impeller geometry.

  • Experimental and computational studies were carried out to confirm the turbulent enhancement of the cooling system of nuclear reactor by large scale vortex generation in nuclear fuel bundle. The large scale vortex motions were generated by rearranging the inclination angles of mixing vanes to the coordinate directions. Axial development of mean and turbulent velocities in the subchannels were measured by the 2-color LDV system. Eddy diffusivity heat flux model and $k-varepsilon$ model were employed to analyze the turbulent heat and fluid flows in the subchannel. The turbulence generated by split mixing vanes has small length scales so that they maintain only about $10 D_H$ after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex continue more and remain up to $25 D_H$after the spacer gird.
