Objectives: This study reports on the improvement of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis with ovarian teratoma after Korean medicine treatment. Methods: A patient was treated with Korean medicine treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal medications (Gami-ondam-tang and Samulanshin-tang-gamibang). The patient's improvement was evaluated using manual muscle testing (MMT), the Mini-Mental State Exam-Korea (MMSE-K), the modified Barthel index (MBI), and the Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). Results: After using Korean medicine treatments, the patient's MMT, MMSE-K, and MBI scores increased, and the CASE score decreased. Conclusion: This case suggests that Korean medicine can be effective in treating the symptoms of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

A patient with central post-stroke pain was treated for 4 weeks with scalp acupuncture and traditional Korean medicine (following a cerebral infarction in 2013). The patient presented at Chungju hospital in January 2019 with left side weakness and tingling, numbness in the left hemisphere, chronic pain and dysarthria. Initially, herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacupunture, indirect moxibustion, and physiotherapy were administered together with Western medicine, with no improvement in the patient's condition. On Day 5, scalp electroacupuncture (MS1, MS5, MS10, MS11) was introduced. The numbness feeling in the patient's head resolved, and the pain in his upper body decreased. Grip force difference between the left and right hand improved from 3 kg to 0-0.5 kg. Sleep disturbance was resolved after 4 weeks treatment, and his average numeric rating scale score for pain improved from an admission score of 10, to a discharge score of 5. The patient could walk unaided after treatment.

Objectives This study was conducted to investigate randomized controlled trial studies about clinical treatment of traditional Chinese medicine for chondromalacia patellae. Methods We searched randomized controlled trial studies about traditional Chinese medicine treatment for chondromalacia patella through China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). 27 articles published from 2015-2019 were finally chosen and analyzed by published year, number of samples, evaluation criteria, treatment duration, treatment method. Results Various treatments such as acupuncture therapy, herbal medicine, moxibustion therapy, manipulation, external treatment were practiced in China. Most of them were combined with western medicine or injection, rehabilitation therapy. Conclusions There were diverse studies about traditional Chinese medical treatment for chondromalacia patellae in China. In Korea, more clinical research about chondromalacia patellae is still needed. This study will be helpful for future research on Korean medicine for chondromalacia patellae.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of herbal medicine during the Western medicine therapy in adenomyosis. Methods: The author searched 5 electronic databases and search keywords were 'Adenomyosis' and 'Herbal Medicine'. We included randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) using herbal medicine therapy combined Western medicine for adenomyosis patients. Results: The author selected 12 studies. The systematic review of the 12 trials indicated that herbal medicine therapy integrated Western medicine therapy was more effective than Western medicine therapy alone. Conclusions: The herbal medicine therapy combined Western medicine for adenomyosis patients seems to improve pain relief and improvement of illness from this research. However, this result should be taken cautiously by unclear risk of bias. More clinical research will be needed to standardize the results of this study through herbal medicine.

To evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture treatment for primary dysmenorrhea (PD), a literature review of a randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed where electroacupuncture was used as a treatment intervention in patients diagnosed with PD. Relevant clinical studies (N = 226) were retrieved from multiple databases according to the study inclusion/exclusion criteria, and interventions and outcomes were analyzed. As a result of the review, there were 6 RCTs which met the criteria. In all 4 studies that measured pain indicators (visual analog scales), electroacupuncture showed significantly positive changes. In addition, positive changes were observed in most indicators (MMDQ, PGF2a, PGE2, 6-keto PGF1, TXB2, clinical efficacy score, uterine arterial blood flow parameters, and blood viscosity). 2 studies showed that electroacupuncture had a stronger therapeutic effect than NSAIDs. No major side effects were reported. Electroacupuncture may be an effective and safe treatment for PD however, further RCTs are required.

The purpose of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine and acupuncture in jaw tremor with Agitation. We studied two inpatients who had jaw tremor with agitation in the OO University Korean medicine hospital. They was treated with acupuncture (LU8, LR4, HT3, LR2) and herbal medicine. The effect of treatment was evaluated by Visual Analog Scale(VAS) and motor examination of Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRSIII). Both VAS of jaw tremor symptom and agitation and UPDRSIII score of tremor were decreased. The result suggest the combination treatment of herbal medicine and acupuncture might be effective for the jaw tremor with agitation.

Objectives This study is to investigate domestic trends of chuna manual therapy on traffic accident for recent 10 years. Methods We searched the studies on chuna manual therapy for traffic accident in 6 Korean web databases. Consequently, 17 research papers were founded. We analyzed these papers according to their published year, the titles of journal, the type of study, the number of cases, the sites of injury, assessment scales of study, and ethics of research. Results 17 papers were published since 2005. The studies on chuna manual therapy about traffic accident were mainly published in the journal of korean society of chuna manual medicine for spine & nerves and the journal of korean medicine rehabilitation. All papers were clinical research include 2 case series, 2 non randomized controlled trials (NRCTs), 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The most frequently occured symptom was neck pain. In assessment scales, visual analog scale (VAS) was mainly used. All clinical studies were not mentioned about approval of institutional review board (IRB). Conclusions In this study, we analyzed the trends of chuna manual therapy on traffic accident in Korea from 2005 to 2014. In reviewing published papers, we found several weak points in methods of research and quality of study protocol. It is needed to adjust these problems for development of future researches.

The effect of combined Korean medicine treatment including facial chuna manual therapy was retrospectively investigated in patients with Bell's palsy. There were 16 patients (14 males) who received 2 months outpatient treatment following > 14 days of hospitalization. The Yanagihara score and House-Brackmann grade were used to measure the severity of symptoms and recovery. The patients (mean age 58.5 ± 24.74 years) were categorized based on their medical history of hypertension (n = 10), diabetes millitus (n = 10), or oral intake of steroids early in the diagnosis of Bell's palsy (n = 10). There was no difference between patients who had or did not have a previous history of diabetes mellitus or oral steroid. Both the Yanagihara-score and House-Brackmann grade improved significantly in the total patient sample after treatment (p < 0.001). Combined Korean medicine including facial chuna manual therapy may have a beneficial effect on patient symptoms and recovery.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments on an elderly patient with acute hematochezia and anemia Case presentation: An 81-year-old female with chronic multifocal middle cerebral artery infarction had symptoms of acute hematochezia and anemia. Method: The patient was treated with Korean medicine therapy. Results: Treatment with Korean medicine, including herbal medicine, significantly improved the patient's symptoms. After treatment, her hematochezia was improved and the results of a complete blood count (CBC) also improved. No side effects were observed during treatment. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment can be considered an effective treatment for acute hematochezia and anemia in an elderly patient.

This study aimed to report the improvement in a vascular oculomotor nerve palsy patient treated with Korean medicine. A 68-year-old man with vascular oculomotor nerve palsy was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and an herbal medicine (Gangwhalyufung-tang). This case was measured and assessed by the numerical rating scale (NRS), EuroQol-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D), score of diplopia, and ratio of MRD1. The NRS decreased, and the patient showed improvement in EQ-5D, score of diplopia, and ratio of MRD1. Korean medicine treatments are considered helpful in treating diplopia and ptosis due to vascular oculomotor nerve palsy.
