  • Herein, we report the effectiveness of Korean medicine for the treatment of postherpetic upper limb weakness and pain. The patient received a combination of Korean medicine treatment modalities, including electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine. Muscle strength and pain were evaluated using a manual muscle test (MMT) and a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), respectively. The overall MMT score improved after hospitalization, and elbow extension improved from 3+ at admission to 5 at discharge. The NRS score improved to 2 at discharge. This study suggests the effectiveness of a combination of Korean medicine modalities in treating postherpetic motor nerve paralysis.

  • Objectives: Term standardization is important in every field of study. There have been several attempts to standardize terms in Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM). We undertook a review of Romanized prescription nomenclature of main titles in the Journal of Korean Medicine to analyze the methods of Romanized prescription nomenclature. Methods: We extract Romanized prescription names from Vol. 26, No. 4 to latest Issue Vol. 34, No. 2, Journal of Korean Medicine. Results: The Society of Korean Medicine has guidelines for Romanized prescription nomenclature. However, only 72 out of 142 Romanized prescription names conformed with the guidelines. In addition, 117 out of 142 names were italicized without guideline. Also, there were several ways of marking prescription names. Conclusions: For making information and easy searching of terms, we need normative regulations for Romanized prescription nomenclature by the Society of Korean Medicine.

  • A review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using electroacupuncture (EA) to treat patients with foot drop was performed to analyze the effectiveness of EA for this condition. Relevant studies (n = 183) from 7 databases (Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica Database, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Korean Studies Information Service System, Research Information Sharing Service, and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System) were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 12 RCTs met the selection criteria. In all 12 studies, EA showed significantly positive changes. In most indicators, positive changes were observed in the EA group compared with that in the control group. Significant increases were confirmed in muscle strength-related indicators such as the Fugl-Meyer motor scale, surface electromyography, active range of motion, and gait-related indicators such as the Tinetti score, maximum walking speed, and Berg balance scale. No notable adverse events were reported. EA is suggested as an effective treatment for post-stroke foot drop; however, more RCTs are required.

NRS, ODI and improvement rate of each group were investigated. Treatment every patient has received as follow; acupuncture, herbal medicine, Chuna manipulation, bee venom, and physical treatment. Results Acute patients showed improvement with NRS of $3.98{\pm}2.50$ and ODI of $28.04{\pm}21.54$. The NRS of sub-acute patients showed improvement with NRS of $2.81{\pm}2.07$, ODI also showed improvement with $11.64{\pm}13.94$. Statistically significant difference was observed in NRS, ODI and improvement for acute patients. Improvement in pain and disability was observed to be larger. Conclusions It demonstrated that receiving valid conservative Korean medicine treatment is beneficial for low back pain patients in improvement of their pain and disability.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate liver function test results in admitted patients before and after herbal treatment. Methods: 54 subjects admitted to hospital had liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin) before and after herbal treatment from 1 March 2017 to 30 June 2019. Results: Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were not significantly changed (p>0.05). On admission, 11 patients had abnormal liver function, while seven patients had abnormal results in alkaline phosphatase upon discharge. Three of the seven were normal when they were hospitalized. Conclusions: This study suggests that herbal treatment may have no effect on liver injury.
