  • Recently, the valuation of patented technology has been greatly emphasized, and patent citation has been accepted as a very useful index of this technology. In this study, we performed correlation analyses between the patent citation counts and 17 explanatory variables of morphological, technological, and conceptual factors with a test dataset of U.S. patents in five subject fields. Seven variables having 5% or more standardized variances($r^2$) with patent citation counts were identified; number of pages, number of claims, reference-average-citation rate, patent increase/decrease rate, strength of bibliographic coupling, co-citation counts and document similarity. The result of the ANOVA test shows that the mean values of these variables vary among most subject fields.

  • Citation analysis studies have reported many problems associated with data coverage problems common to popular citation databases such as Web of Science(WoS). In addition, the studies that analyzed citation patterns of Korean publications found that up to 75% of references in Korean publications were to international publications. As a first step in investigating the international coverage of WoS database, the study investigated the effect of adding citation data from Korea Science Citation Database(KSCD) to the impact factors and journal rankings of the journals listed in Journal Citation Reports. Specifically, the study mined the reference data from top 5 Korean Library and Information Science(KLIS) journals to recompute the impact factors reported in JCR 2009. Since the resulting journal rankings did not significantly differ from JCR 2009 rankings except for minor ranking changes, we analyzed additional citation data from 45 computer science and electrical engineering journals. Although the overall ranking difference was not statistically significant, one of the ranking partitions showed significant change. Such study findings despite its limited data sample suggest the potential impact of non-Western citation databases such as KSCD to bibliometric indicators provided by popular citation databases like WoS.

  • Recently, the valuation of research papers has been greatly emphasized, and their citation has been accepted as a very useful indicator. In this study, we performed correlation analyses between the paper citation counts and 11 explanatory variables of morphological and conceptual factors with a test dataset of the papers of 11 journals in library and information science. The analysis results of the correlations show that only the document similarity has 5% or more standardized variances(r2) with paper citation counts and the document similarity with citation counts get higher as the variable value increases.

  • This study aims to investigate the scholarly communications and citation influences in library and information science field by conducting journal citation network analysis. For data collection, four major journals in library and information science field were chosen and 4,471 of research papers and 18,424 of citation records were collected from Korean Citation Index. The results show that Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science was the most influential journal with highest citation in LIS fields, while Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science Management influenced other research fields.

  • Purpose This study intended to introduce new approaches to identify the intellectual structure of supply chain management(SCM) researches, which combines author co-citation analysis(ACA) and social network analysis(SNA). Design/methodology/approach We searched RISS(www.riss.kr) and NDSL(www.ndsl.or.kr) database and collected 292 academic papers on supply chain management between 2001 and 2011. Among 9,637 references of these papers, we analyzed 1,848 references that were published by domestic authors. We produced a correlation matrix of 32 author co-citation matrix and conducted multi-variate statistical analysis such as factor analysis. We also performed social network analysis to identify the main researchers in SCM. Findings We found four main sub-areas of supply chain management research: SCM adoption factors, logistics, SCM performance, and SCM structure. We could present the authors who played important roles within the network by using SNA indicators. The finding of this research also suggests more collaborations among domestic researchers are required to overcome the low co-citation rates among domestic authors.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify highly cited articles and examine trends and characteristics in research on periacetabular osteotomy. Materials and Methods: The 50 most highly cited articles on periacetabular osteotomy research were identified using Scopus. Data regarding article demographics and publication were collected from each article and an analysis was performed. Results: The mean citation count was 125±37. The article with the highest total citation count (796), five-year citation count (327), and five-year citation density (65/year) was reported by Reinhold Ganz. The five-year citation density showed strong correlation with total citation density (r=0.930, P<0.001). Reinhold Ganz, the most productive author, was listed on 13 articles in the cohort with 455 weighted citation points. Conclusion: This study provides a collection of articles examining periacetabular osteotomies and demonstrates that citation count can be regarded as an acceptable measure of the contemporary academic influence of an article.

  • The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the citation habit of Korean social scientists by making use of citation analysis and content analysis, and to assess the nature of interdisciplinary flow of information in Korea in terms of the citation dependency on other disciplines, the types of channels used in formal scientific communication, the countries published the literatures of other disciplines cited in the source articles, and the languages used in the literatures of other disciplines. The major findings and conclusions reached at this study are summarised as follows: 1. Korean social scientists mainly cite the literatures of economics, sociology, politics, and history when they cite the literature of other disciplines. 2. The citation dependency on other disciplines of the economists, polictial scientists, and sociologists are 6 percents, 14 percents, and 19 percents, respectively. 3. The citation dependency on history of the economists is 25 percents, the dependency on sociology of the political scientists is 34.9 percents, and the dependency on economics of the sociologists is 50. 19 percents. 4. The types of channels used in formal scientific communication in social sciences are firmly book and journal. 5. The countries published the literatures of other disciplines .cited in the source articles are Korea and the U. S. firmly. 6. The languages used in the literatures of other disciplines cited in the source articles are Korean and English overwhelmingly.

  • This study compared Author Profiling Analysis(APA) to Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA). The former is a new analytic technique on the intellectual structure of a science whereas the latter is a traditional analytic technique. The purpose of this study was to propose appropriate methods to analyze intellectual structure of a science in the Korean research environment. In order to achieve the goal, this study adopted APA using Text Mining for analysis on the intellectual structure of a science rather than relying on citation index in order to determine a potential utility of the new analytic technique that can identify the intellectual structure.
