  • Interfacial fracture toughness under various mixed-mode loading is measured to provide a mixed-mode fracture criterion of a composite/metal bonded joint. Experimental fracture characterization tests were carried out using a SLB (single leg bending) specimen, which controls mode ratio with the specimen thickness. The experimental result of the SLB test conforms that interfacial fracture toughness increases as the mode II component increases. The effect of loading mode on interfacial crack growth is investigated on the basis of crack path observation using microscopic image acquisition technique. The influence of interfacial roughness on adhesion strength is also discussed.

  • This study investigated the so far little-researched characteristics of the behaviors of rock slopes at the time of an earthquake. For the selection of the rock block, a proper model was formed by applying the similarity in consideration of the roughness and strength of the rock slope(10m) on the site, and shaking table tests were carried out according to seismic excitement acceleration, and seismic waves. In the case of the inclination angle of the joint plane of 20°, the long period wave at 0.3g or more at the time of the seismic excitement surpassed the length of 100mm, the permissible displacement (0.01H, H:slope height), which brought about the collapse of the rock; the short period wave surpassed the permissible displacement at 0.1g, which caused the collapse of the slope. The rock slope was close to a rigid block and a structure more vulnerable to the long period wave than to the short period wave. It collapsed in the short period wave even at the seismic amplitude smaller than the maximum design acceleration in Korea.

  • Real-Time Traversability should be analyzed from the equiped sensors' data in real time for autonomous outdoor navigation. However, it is difficult to find out such traversability that considers the terrain roughness and the vehicle dynamics especially in case of skid type vehicle. The traversability based on real time dynamic analysis was proposed to solve such problem but in navigation with strait driving path. To adapt the method into the navigation with curved driving path, a path following controller should be incorporated into the dynamic model even though it cause the real time problem. In this paper, a dynamic model is proposed to solve the real time problem in the traversability analysis based on real time dynamic simualtion. The dynamic model contains the control dummy which is connected to the vehicle body with a universal joint to follow the curved path without controller. Simulation and experimental results on $6{\times}6$ articulated unmanned ground vehicle demonstrate the method's effectiveness and applicability into the traversability analysis on terrain with bumps.

  • The biocompatibility and the fatigue strength of Co-Cr-Mo alloy are excellent, so it is used well for the material of artificial joints. The head of artificial joint needs mirror surface for reduction of abrasive resistance. Mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy with geometrically defined single crystal diamond cutting tools is handicapped by micro chipping of tool edge. In general, it is said that the micro chipping of diamond tool is caused by work hardening of Co-Cr-Mo alloy for the cut. In the present research, mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy by applying ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting was carried out. The experimental results show that the micro chipping of diamond tool was suppressed and the tool wear was remarkably reduced as compared with the ordinary diamond cutting without elliptical vibration motion. It was confirmed that the good mirror surface of maximum surface roughness of 25 nmP-V was obtained for the cutting length of about 14 m. It is expected that mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy can be achieved by applying ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting practically.

  • The requirements for harsh environment electronic controllers in automotive applications have been steadily becoming more and more stringent. Electronic substrate technologists have been responding to this challenge effectively in an effort to meet the performance, reliability and cost requirements. An effect of the plasma cleaning at the alumina substrate and the IMC layer between $Sn-37wt\%Pb$ solder and Ag-Pd thick film conductor after reflow soldering has been studied. Organic residual carbon layer was removed by the substrate plasma cleaning. So the interfacial adhesive strength was enhanced. As a result of AFM measurement, Ag-Pd conductor pad roughness were increased from 304nm to 330nm. $Cu_6Sn_5$ formed during initial ref]ow process at the interface between TiWN/Cu UBM and solder grew by the succeeding reflow process so the grains had a large diameter and dense interval. A cellular-shaped $Ag_3Sn$ was observed at the interface between Ag-Pd conductor pad and solder. The diameters of the $Ag_3Sn$ grains ranged from about $0.1\~0.6{\mu}m$. And a needle-shaped $Ag_3Sn$ was also observed at the inside of the solder.

  • Proper understanding of offshore wind speed variability is of essential importance in practice, which provides useful information to a wide range of coastal and marine activities. In this paper, long-term wind speed data recorded at various offshore stations are analyzed in the framework of fractal dimension analysis. Fractal analysis is a well-established data analysis tool, which is particularly suitable to determine the complexity in time series from a quantitative point of view. The fractal dimension is estimated using the conventional box-counting method. The results suggest that the wind speed data are generally fractals, which are likely to exhibit a persistent nature. The mean fractal dimension varies from 1.31 at an offshore weather station to 1.43 at an urban station, which is mainly associated with surface roughness condition. Monthly variability of fractal dimension at offshore stations is well-defined, which often possess larger values during hotter months and lower values during winter. This is partly attributed to the effect of thermal instability. In addition, with an increase in measurement interval, the mean and minimum fractal dimension decrease, whereas the maximum and coefficient of variation increase in parallel.

  • In the fossil power plant, the reliability of the components which consist of the many welded parts depends on the quality of welding. The residual stress is occurred by the heat flux of high temperature during weld process. This decreases the mechanical properties as the strength of fatigue and fracture or causes the stress corrosion cracking and fatigue fracture. Especially, the accidents due to the residual stress occurred at the weld parts of high-temperature and high-pressure pipes and steam headers. Also, the residual stress of the welded part in the recently constructed power plants has been brought into relief as the cause of various accidents. The aim of this study is the measurement of the residual stress using the x-ray diffraction method. The merits of this are more accurate and applicable than other methods. The materials used for the study is P92 steel for the use of high temperature pipe on super critical condition. The variables of tests are the post-weld heat treatment, the surface roughness and the depth from the original surface. The test results were analyzed by the distributed characteristics of the full width at half maximum intensity (FWHM) in x-ray diffraction intensity curve and by the relation of hardness with FWHM.

  • The processes of regional scales in the East Korean coastal waters were investigated by analysis of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images taken by the European Research Satellites ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat. More than 500 quick look frames taken in 1991-2003 were examined to detect the frames with clearly surface expressions of oceanic phenomena. 26 ERS-1/2 SAR and 11 Envisat wide swath Advanced SAR (ASAR) frames were selected and obtained from the European Space Agency in a form of the precision high-resolution images. The following oceanic phenomena and processes were evident in the radar imagery through the Korean costal waters: fronts, currents, eddies, internal waves, island and ship wakes, oil pollution, etc. They manifested themselves in the field of sea surface roughness, their scale ranged from several tens meters to about 100 km. The most common morphology of these phenomena was a series of contrast dark or light curvilinear lines and bands. The joint analysis of the discussed SAR images with other satellite and in situ data supported and enhanced our interpretation of SAR signatures.

  • Laser welding has attracted great attention as a tool used to join electrical steel coils. In this study, laser butt welding for electrical steel coil joining was conducted using the Taguchi method. It was found that structural defects such as void sand cracks were not produced in welds. This indicated that the performance of laser welding in electrical steel was excellent. According to the Taguchi analysis, the total welding quality index (TWQI) considering the bead height and roughness and tensile strength of the weld joint was almost evenly affected by laser power, welding speed, and focal position. The optimum welding conditions to maximize the TWQI were a laser power of 1220W, welding speed of 90 mm/s, and a focal position of 1mm. The regress model predicting the TWQI was also developed using the surface response method. We found that the model predicts measured values with an average error of 16.36%.
