  • The mechanism of the blowhole and the pit formation in lap-jointed fillet CO₂ arc welds of Zn-coated steel sheet was established by the direct observation of the gas behavior in the molten pool with the high speed camera system. Main conclusions obtained are as follows1) Some blowholes were formed by incomplete back-filling to the pits at the last stage of the solidification. This type of blowhole was formed through four stages of gas in the molten pool, incubation, explosion, back-filling and completion of back-filling stage.2) Most of the pits was back-filled at the last stage of their formation.   • Recently, rock slope in large scale is often accompanied with the construction of mountain roads and power plants. Rock in nature has a number of discontinuities such as bedding plane, joints, fracture zones and others. In order to improve rock slope stability, it is necessary to research shear properties of rock joint. In this paper shear properties of rock joint were studied by tilting test. Relations between properties of roughness and shear behavior of rock joint are investigated experimentally. The roughness are examined by compared with shear strength. Consequently, it becomes clear that the engineering properties and failure state modes of slope is different by JRC, and the peak friction angle is different by percent of filling.

Optimization of FSW of Nano-silica-reinforced ABS T-Joint using a Box-Behnken Design (BBD)

  • This experimental study investigated friction stir welding (FSW) of the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) T-joint in the presence of various nano-silica levels. This study aim to handle the drawbacks of the friction stir welding (FSW) of an ABS T-joint with various quantity of nanoparticles and assess the performance of nanoparticles in the welded joint. Moreover, the relationship between the nanoparticle quantity and FSW was analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM) Box-Behnken design. The input parameters were the tool rotation speed (400, 600, 800 rpm), the transverse speed (20, 30, 40 mm/min), and the nano-silica level (0.8, 1.6, 2.4 g). The tensile strength of the prepared specimens was determined by the universal testing machine. Silica nanoparticles were used to improve the mechanical properties (the tensile strength) of ABS and investigate the effect of various FSW parameters on the ABS T-joint. The results of Box-Behnken RSM revealed that sound joints with desired characteristics and efficiency are fabricated at tool rotation speed 755 rpm, transverse speed 20 mm/min, and nano-silica level 2.4 g. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed the crucial role of silica nanoparticles in reinforcing the ABS T-joint. The SEM images also indicated a decrease in the nanoparticle size by the tool rotation, leading to the filling and improvement of seams formed during FSW of the ABS T-joint.

  • Insertional bone cysts of the knee joint mainly appear in the form of small cysts at the bone attachment of the cruciate ligaments, and are usually not associated with symptoms. The authors report a 31-year-old man diagnosed with a huge insertional bone cyst connected to the femoral attachment of the posterior cruciate ligament in the knee joint, who obtained good results after curettage and bone cement filling.

  • In this study, the engineering characteristics of CLSM mixed with GBFS and GF were identified to review the applicability as a replacement material and further evaluate the recharge and field applicability as a joint filler material. First, Using more than 30% of GBFS to replace FA enabled bleeding control through improved fluidity. Second, When using more than 30% of FNS to replace sand, it was found that adding 0.25~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Third, When using more than 30% of both GBFS and FNS in combination, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Also, it was confirmed that proper mixing of 15~60% of GF secured the effective strength and desired quality as a refiller and joint filler material.

Study on shear fracture behavior of soft filling in concrete specimens: Experimental tests and numerical simulation

  • In this paper, the shear behavior of soft filling in rectangular-hollow concrete specimens was simulated using the 2D particle flow code (PFC2D). The laboratory-measured properties were used to calibrate some PFC2D micro-properties for modeling the behavior of geo-materials. The dimensions of prepared and modeled samples were 100 mm×100 mm. Some disc type narrow bands were removed from the central part of the model and different lengths of bridge areas (i.e., the distance between internal tips of two joints) with lengths of 30 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm were produced. Then, the middle of the rectangular hollow was filled with cement material. Three filling sizes with dimensions of 5 mm×5 mm, 10 mm×5 mm, and 15 mm×5 mm were provided for different modeled samples. The parallel bond model was used to calibrate and re-produce these modeled specimens. Therefore, totally, 9 different types of samples were designed for the shear tests in PFC2D. The shear load was gradually applied to the model under a constant loading condition of 3 MPa (σc/3). The loading was continued till shear failure occur in the modeled concrete specimens. It has been shown that both tensile and shear cracks may occur in the fillings. The shear cracks mainly initiated from the crack (joint) tips and coalesced with another one. The shear displacements and shear strengths were both increased as the filling dimensions increased (for the case of a bridge area with a particular fixed length).

  • In laser welding, automatic seam tracking is important to adjust the laser head position in real time as it moves along the seam. Also if the joint gap is occurred, filling the missing material into the joint gap is necessary to prevent welding defects and bad welding quality. In general, the joint gap width is not constant along the seam due to a variety of reason. So it is essential to control the filler wire speed into the joint gap to acquire good welding quality. This paper describes an intelligent filler wire feeding device which can control 3-dimensional seam tracking and the filler wire speed by measuring the gap position and the joint gap width in laser welding. We call this device as Smart Micro Control system(SMC). To achieve this objective, we assessed weld quality in 2mm sheets of A16061 which had various gap width by using the developed device. From the experimental results, It was found the possibility that the developed device could be used in welding various 3-dimensional structures.

Synchronous Monomelic Juxta-articular Multicentric Chondrosarcoma -A Case Report- (동시성 단지성 관절 근접 다발성 연골 육종 -증례 보고-)

  • Chondrosarcoma is one of the most common types of primary bone sarcoma. With the exception of the mesenchymal subtype, chondrosarcomas are usually low-grade lesions and rarely show multicentricity or distant metastasis. Only rare cases of multicentric chondrosarcomas have been reported in association with Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome. To our knowledge, no report has been issued of a synchronous multicentric chondrosarcoma occurrence across a joint. We experienced a 30-year-old man with a synchronous monomelic juxta-articular multicentric chondrosarcoma across a shoulder joint in the absence of pulmonary and visceral metastases. He was treated by curettage and cement filling with allograft in the acromion and wedge resection with cement filling in the proximal humerus. At the 18-month follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence, and the patient had full range of motion without pain.

  • This technology employs a method of forming a single-ply PLUS waterproofing sheet layer comprised of applying a single-ply synthetic polymer layer on a vibrating structure (steel frame, RC) or an inclined surface by using a T joint lap-filling coil and an embedded metal coated sheet. The T - joint reinforcing lap-filling coil was used to block the ingress channel of the rainwater by applying the material in the vulnerable area where the three sides of the waterproof sheet overlapped. Conventional waterproofing techniques have a problem in that the waterproof sheet is pierced because the end portion of the waterproof sheet applied to the vertical portion is fixed by a nail, and the sealant applied to the end portion of the sheet cannot easily secure long-term waterproof durability due to the influence of the external environment. Therefore, the developed technology secured the waterproof durability against the vertical part by using the embedded metal sheet. In addition, automatic hot-air fusing is used to improve the quality of waterproof construction and point fixation method using fixed hardware. This is a technology that is not significantly restricted in the high degradation level regions of domestic waterproof construction environments in Korea such as low-temperature environment, wet floor.
