  • In this study, a jetty construction is taken into account for the reduction of sediment diffusive concentration incoming from the upstream river due to the urbanization and industrial development and to minimize the effects on the coastal ecosystems. The field observation and numerical calculation are conducted to analyze the diffusion zone of sediment concentration in the small estuary and coastal area. The specification of the installed jetty which is able to control the sediment concentration was decided based on the prediction of the dispersion area changes in space and time. The selected size and layout for the jetty design were examined for the dispersion zone by numerical calculation and field observation. As a result, the jetties constructed in the estuary retarded the dispersion rate of sediment concentration, so that the effect area of sediment dispersion was obviously decreased. In addition, the measured field data indicated that the sediment deposition in the inside of dikes could be controlled and the right side area of jetties could be preserved without influx sediment diffusion.

  • The ships have a lot of electric machinery needed to supply electricity from the moment of launching coming out of dry dock to docking at jetty. Thus, the ships always have to use alternator and electric machinery that has low efficiency under the low load. Many government service ships like the MMU training ship have been spending lots of time at jetty rather than sailing at sea. These ships are operated under the condition of low load due to the operation of basic machinery at jetty and electric machineries are driven with the status of low efficiency. This paper would suggest the energy saving method for these ships. The investigation describes that shore connection is a great asset to these ships and that the flow rate control by adjusting revolution with the adoption of inverter is better than flow rate control by using throttle valve to save energy. The result is based on the investigation of cooling pump at MMU training ship.

  • 23 cap beams on the 1 Km length jetty bridge in Shin-da power plant (Taipower co., Taiwan) utilize far-end telecontrol cathodic protection technology which is the first case ever used in Taiwan. The system comprises cathodic protection system and te1econtrol monitoring system. The control and monitoring such as protection current adjustment, protection potential and depolarization measurement of the 23 cap beams can be adjusted through system telecontrol operations. Thereby allows monitoring and control of the 23 anode zones in a convenient and cost effective way. This system is at present still in its best running condition since Sept. 1997 when it was completed. All the 23 cap beams can achieve the 100 mV depolarization potential criteria of protection. It meet the specifications of reinforced concrete cathodic protection standard and proved to be very excellent.

  • In recent years, as environmental problems have become great concerns among many people, th loss of beach sand has become one of the highly controversial issue. Major reasons for the beach erosion within the cases of West Coast can be classified as: 1) erosion at Unyeo, Baeksajang beaches are caused by the wave refraction according to the large-scale sand dredging, 2) erosion at Kkotji, Baeksajang, and Unyeo beaches are caused by large-scale embankment construction and the coastal road construction, and 3) erosion at Chollipo and Hakampo beaches are caused by construction of small ports. Erosion in the west coast of Korea coast beach erosion control measures, include groin, zeotube, terraced stone, jetty groin, and beach nourishment. Erosion control measures initially installed to prevent erosion showed a positive effect. However, if there is no continuous source of sand, the effect of measures is fewness.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the mid-term changes of beach and dune morphology at Sohwang beach, Korea using by Total Station. Measurements executed 4 times during two year. Based on ArcInfo as point cloud obtained through precise measurement data by Total Station, alteration of beach and dune was analyzed at DEM, of which cell size is about 1m. Since these artificial constructions have influenced current systems of this region, the large-scale sand movements above mentioned have occurred around the jetty and the sea-wall. There occurred sedimentation in the north of the Jetty and erosion in the south of the Jetty, which is installed at the central part of object area. The direction of recent topographic development does not coincide with that of wind, and, rather, topographic changes occurred mainly at beaches and dunes due to the transformation of coastal water flow caused by artificial structure nearby. If precise measurement is conducted periodically, and long term monitoring is carried out by installing equipment measuring movement pattern of sediment around artificial structure, cause of topographic change around the object area could be discovered.

  • The most important factor affecting the berthing energy generated when a ship berths is the berthing velocity. Thus, an accident may occur if the berthing velocity is extremely high. Several ship features influence the determination of the berthing velocity. However, previous studies have mostly focused on the size of the vessel. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze various features that influence berthing velocity and determine their respective importance. The data used in the analysis was based on the berthing velocity of a ship on a jetty in Korea. Using the collected data, machine learning classification algorithms were compared and analyzed, such as decision tree, random forest, logistic regression, and perceptron. As an algorithm evaluation method, indexes according to the confusion matrix were used. Consequently, perceptron demonstrated the best performance, and the feature importance was in the following order: DWT, jetty number, and state. Hence, when berthing a ship, the berthing velocity should be determined in consideration of various features, such as the size of the ship, position of the jetty, and loading condition of the cargo.

  • Integrated sand control including sediment discharge from hinterland rivers is necessary to maintain coastal sand resources over a long term. In this regard, the following subjects should be considered; efficient ways to transfer discharged sand from a river to the neighboring coast, measures to improve storage efficiency of the discharged sand at the river delta and/or river terrace, measures to prevent the sand resources from being discharged into the deep sea during flooding. From the 1997 to January 2004, the jetty of 156 m length was constructed the Heoya-river mouth to protect the blockade of river mouth. Several tests were carried out to investigate the characteristics of sediment transport and morphological change due to the construction of the jetty at the Heoya-river mouth. Firstly, The sand discharge from Heoya river is quantified by one-dimensional numerical analysis assuming the mixed sand of three different particle diameters. Also the numerical mode system, which predicts the sea bed changes obtained from the Bailard's energy model(1981), was combined with the wave, wave-induced currents and sediment transport models. Then, to understand the changes to the blockade of the river mouth, several aerial photographs were compared, which showed that the changes were significant.

  • Recently, in the light of environments and utilization, countermeasures to preserve beaches in coastal area are required without depending on such as jetties and breakwaters. The necessity of integrated sand management including not only coastal sediment but also sediment discharge from hinterland rivers is increased so as to establish long-term counterplan for sediment transport. In this regard, the following subjects are examined in this study; efficient ways for discharged sand to be transported from a river to the neighboring coast, the river terrace occurrence and its growth at the river delta, measures to improve storage efficiency of the discharged sand and measures to prevent the sand resources from being discharged into the deep sea during flooding. In recent, A jetty of 260 m length was constructed at Namdae River mouth in the year of 2005 as a countermeasure against the occurrence of sand-bar at river mouth and its close. In this study, a series of numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of sediment transport and morphological change due to the construction of jetty at the entrance of Namdae River mouth. Firstly, The sand discharge from Namdae River is quantified by one-dimensional numerical analysis assuming the mixed sand of three different particle diameters. Then, in order to understand the transport behavior of the sand discharge from river and river mouth phenomena the numerical experiments were then conducted to examine the flow behaviors of river efflux and wind generated circulations in coastal area. And, after establishing the numerical model system, which predicts the sea bed changes obtained from the flux model combining with the wave propagation, wave-induced currents and sediment transport models, the sediment transport in the vicinity of Namdae River mouth is analyzed.

  • This research was described the prevention of coastal topographical change and sediment diffusive concentration incoming from small estuary after construction jetties. This structure is constructed to decrease sediment deposition incoming from the upstream river due to the urbanization and industrial development and to minimize effects on the coastal ecosystem. The physical modeling and numerical modeling for waves were conducted to analyze the configuration of Imrang sand beach deformation without and with construction of jetty. The specification of the installed jetty, which is able to control sedimentation concentration was decided based on the prediction of the Imrang beach area changes by space and time. As a result, the jetties constructed in the estuary retarded the rate of sand sediment, so that the effect area of sand sedimentation was obviously decreased. In addition, the measured field data indicated that the sediment deposition inside of dikes could be controlled and the right side area of jetties could be preserved without sediment deposition.
