When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.
The flow characteristics of film coolant issuing into turbulent boundary layer developing on a convex surface have been investigated by means of flow visualization and three-dimensional velocity measurement. The Schlieren optical system with a spark light source was adopted to visualize the jet trajectory injected at 35° and 90° inclination angles. A five-hole directional pressure probe was used to measure three-dimensional mean velocity components at the injection angle of 35°. Flow visualization shows that at the 90° injection, the jet flow is greatly changed near the jet exit due to strong interaction with the crossflow. On the other hand, the balance between radial pressure gradient and centrifugal force plays an important role to govern the jet flow at the 35° injection. The velocity measurement shows that at a velocity ratio of 0.5, the curvature stabilizes downstream flow, which results in weakening of the bound vortex structure. However, the injectant flow is separated from the convex wall gradually, and the bound vortex maintains its structure far downstream at a velocity ratio of 1.98 with two pairs of counter rotating vortices.

Energy systems working coherently in different conditions may not have a specific design which can provide optimal performance. A system working for a longer period at lower efficiency implies higher energy consumption. In this effort, a methodology demonstrated by a jet pump design and optimization via numerical modeling for fluid dynamics and implementation of an evolutionary algorithm for the optimization shows a reduction in computational costs. The jet pump inherently has a low efficiency because of improper mixing of primary and secondary fluids, and multiple momentum and energy transfer phenomena associated with it. The high fidelity solutions were obtained through a validated numerical model to construct an approximate function through surrogate analysis. Pareto-optimal solutions for two objective functions, i.e., secondary fluid pressure head and primary fluid pressure-drop, were generated through a multi-objective genetic algorithm. For the jet pump geometry, a design space of several design variables was discretized using the Latin hypercube sampling method for the optimization. The performance analysis of the surrogate models shows that the combined surrogates perform better than a single surrogate and the optimized jet pump shows a higher performance. The approach can be implemented in other energy systems to find a better design.
The correlations for cross-flow have not been well established, because of the complexity of breakup and atomization mechanism. A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of spray behaviour of liquid jet in the bag breakup regime injected into low-speed cross-flow with the pressure single-hole nozzle. The shadow-graphy method was used for the cross-flow jet visualization. The experimental variables of liquid jet were nozzle diameter $(0.3mm{\sim}1.0mm)$, injection pressure $(50kPa{\sim}150kPa)$, and the velocity of cross-flow $(27m/s{\sim}42m/s)$. The highest penetration trajectories of liquid jet are governed by the momentum ratio $({\rho}_{\iota}U_{\iota}^2/{\rho}_aU_{cross}^2)$ rather than the Weber number and the new empirical equations of the highest penetration trajectory and breakup point at low-speed corss-flow are established.

Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence characteristics are obtained with a linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer in a two-dimensional turbulent jet discharging parallel to a flate. Wall static pressure distribution is also measure. The Reynolds number based on the jet nozzle width (D) is about 42,000 and the step height is 2.5D. The reattachment length is found to be 7.5D by using both wool tuft and oil methods. Upstream of the reattachment point, there exist double coherent structures and mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and triple product profiles are asymmetric about jet center line due to the influence of streamline curvature and recirculating flow region. Near the reattachment point, wall static pressure and turbulence quantities change its shape rapidly because of the large eddies by the solid wall. Especially, turbulence intensity has a maximum value in the reattachment regin, then decreases slowly in the redeveloping wall jet ragion. Downstream of X/D=14, a single large scale eddy structure is formed. Far downstream affer the reattachment(X/D.geq.18) mean velocity profile, the decay of maximum velocity and the variation of jet half width are nearly similar to those of plane wall jet, but the Reynolds stresses are higher than those of the latter.

The fuel transfer characteristics of the jet pump between fuel tanks, which is applied in the smart UAV fuel supply system, were experimentally investigated. The operating conditions of the jet pump were setup to meet the engine requirement according to mission profile, and the jet pump performance was evaluated at those conditions. The pressure ratio and the efficiency of the jet pump were measured with the variation of flow ratio. In addition, the area ratio was taken into the consideration to examine the effect on the jet pump performance. From the evaluation results, the jet pump met the fundamental requirement to transfer fuel with the flow ratio of 2.23. In the case of the jet pump that is focused on the fuel transfer quantity rather than its efficiency, the flow ratio would be adjusted through the variation of area ratio of the jet pump within the permitted limit of pressure ratio.

The domestic standards which used the standards of Road Association of Japan standards presents the distances of between jet-fans by the caliber of jet-fan. However, the Permanent International Association of Road Congress (PIARC) encourages it to be ten times a diameter of the tunnel. The distance of jet-fans installed in bases of two standards differs as much as two times, as so the proper basis after analysis of internal air current is needed since such difference can lead to disadvantage for selection of ventilation configuration. Based on Froude modeling theory, 1/40 scale acrylic model of a tunnel (215mm in diameter and 6.9m in length) and jet-fan (26.3mm and 31.6mm in caliber) was made for the measurement of changes in pressure and velocity due to the extension of tunnel for analysis of internal air current. And we measured the changes in pressure of surroundings of a jet-fan for confirmation of recirculation due to the exterior airs when the jet-fan is on. The results of the model test show that internal air current was not influenced by the caliber of jet-fan and its changes in pressure and velocity were stable in the point where it was nine times of diameter of the tunnel. Also the recirculation when the jet-fan is on could be verified. According to such results, in the cases of installing jet-fan in tunnels, the distances between jet-fans needs to be more than nine times the diameter.
In this study, STAR-CD-based CFD techniques was used to analyze velocity distribution and pressure distribution according to the variation of angels at $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ a suction pipe when inlet velocity condition is 1 m/s. SIMPLE maritime law used for analytical algorithm and the results of CFD analysis evaluated by particle image velocimetry (PIV). The results of CFD analysis in this study have revealed that the optimal angle of a suction pipe for a jet pump is $90^{\circ}$ and the PIV test has showed the same results. Therefore, it is thought that when CFD is used to analyze the flow characteristics of a jet pump it would be possible to produce optimal designs of its devices.
Accurate assessment of the effect of jet plume on the boattail pressure drag of transonic airbreathing missiles is very important to reduce drag and to satisfy the flight range and the required maneuver. Numerical results of drag analysis for boattail and base pressures due to jet plume are presented considering the turbulence modeling. Drag assessment due to the size of jet plume, the conditions of the exhaust gas, the configurations of the boattail, and transonic mach numbers is included.
Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Current work emphases on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet was injected against through the leakage flow, It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied in various parameters. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient Effect of sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.
