Age and growth in length of anchovy juveniles were analysed from the samples collected from the coastal waters of Chonnam, Korea, in 1988 and 1989. Ages in days were determined by counting growth increments in otolith from 248 individuals. Growth in length versus age in days was well represented by Gompertz curve: $$L =5.76{\times}E xp(1.66 \times(1- E xp(-0.44\;t)))$$, or $$L=3.7{\times}E xp(1.99\times(1-E xp(-0.0614\;t)))$$. The mean growth rate was 0.38 mm/day from 20 days to 40 days. Growth rate was maximum at 10 days, and then decreased gradually. The growth of anchovy juvenile were nearly constant inspite of the sampling dates or stations.
The genus Tilia is characterized by linear form bracts of which the lower part is attached to the peduncle of a cyme. This character is distinguished from the others genus of Malvaceae. The purpose of this study is verifying the phylogenetic relationship of genus Tilia. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to evaluate relationships of 10 taxa of Tilia in Korea and Japan including one outgroup (Gossypium hirsutum). The molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted with sequences based on ITS, trnL-F and rpl32-trnL region. The combined data result of ITS, trnL-F and rpl32-trnL was formed by 6 clades. T. kiusiana situated as the most basal clade. T. amurensis, T. taquetii and T. rufa are composed a clade. T. koreana, T. insularis and T. japonica was formed independent clade. T. insularis has the closest relationship with T. japonica. T. miqueliana, T. mandshurica, and T. megaphylla are composed a clade and showed a sister relationship than other species.

This study was carried out to investigate physiological activities in the extract of Eriobotrya japonica in order to elevate its utilization as a functional material. The maximum total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were 28.91$\pm$2.1 mg/g and 10.54$\pm$4.6 mg/g, respectively. The nitrite scavenging abilities at pH 1.2 were in the range of $49.52\pm1.04\sim72.52\pm$0.84% whereas they were $35.28\pm0.78\sim51.20\pm$1.10% at pH 4.2 and $27.90\pm0.36\sim32.26\pm$1.20% at pH 6.0. At the concentrations of 100, 200 and 300 $\mu g$/mL of the hot-water extract, the degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells were inhibited 14.58$\pm$0.97%, 43.69$\pm$0.96% and 95.58$\pm$0.75%, respectively. The anti-inflammation activity was the highest as 44.35$\pm$0.63% at a concentration of 400 $\mu g$/mL.
While preparing a floristic study of Korean hepatics, we discovered the six unrecorded species of Lejeuneaceae from Mt. Seolak, Mt. Gaya, Geojedo, Wando and Gageodo. Archilejeunea kiushiana, Drepanolejeunea angustifolia, Lejeunea aquatica, Lejeunea otiana, Leucolejeunea japonica, and Spruceanthus semirepandus, are reported here. A. kiushiana was characterized by unlobed underleaves, homogeneous oil-bodies, and four to six perianth-keels. D. angustifolia is similar to D. ternatensis, but it differs in the dorsal margin of the leaf-lobe, which is entire or denticulate, spines never present, and leaf cells smooth or with minute dorsal bulging. L. aquatica is similar to L. japonica in that it has a wider and similar shape (wider than long) of its underleaves and has homogeneous oil-bodies. The former, however, has minute leaf-lobules (5-15 cells), 1/10 to 1/5 the length of the leaf-lobe, versus leaf-lobules 1/4 to 1/3 the length of the leaf-lobe. L. otiana is similar to L. kodamae in that it has a large and acute first tooth of the leaf-lobule but differs in having plain leaf-lobules obliquely quadrate and an indistinct second tooth. Drepanolejeunea (Spruce) Schiffn. is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions (Mizutani, 1961). L. japonica is characterized by entire underleaves; one large, coarsely segmented oil-body per leaf cell; and a large second tooth of the leaf lobule, two to six cells long, and two to three cells wide at the base. S. semirepandus is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions in Asia. This species is characterized by small homogeneous and numerous oil-bodies, up to 10 smooth perianthkeels, and leaf-lobe acute at the apex.
The leaf and petiole segments of Farfugium japonica were cultured to investigate the influence of growth regulators on their callus induction and plant regeneration. The callus induction and growth showed a good response both leaf and petiole on MS media supplemented with 1∼2 mg/L 2,4-D and 1∼2 mg/L BA. Callus induction and growth were more effective in petiole segments than leaf one. The highest percentage of plant regeneration was obtained from 60-day-old calli on MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/L NAA and 2 mg/L BA. When subcultured to the same medium for about 60 days, multiple shoots were developed from regenerating callus. The shoots produced roots after transferring to rooting medium containing 0.5 mg/L IAA. The plantlets over 50 mm in height were successfully acclimatized in vermiculite, and the survival rate was over 95%.

Lonicerae Flos has antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, pneumococci, Bacillus dysenterii, Salmonella typhi, and paratyphoid. It is an antiviral agent. The herb has a cytoprotective effect against $CCl_{4}-induced$ hepatic injury. It has antilipemic action, interfering with lipid absorption from the gut. Nowadays this herb is used mainly in the treatment of upper respiratory infections, such as tonsillitis and acute laryngitis. It is also used in the treatment of skin suppurations, such as carbuncles, and to treat viral conjunctivitis, influenza, pneumonia, and mastitis. Lonicerae Flos is dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica, L. hypoglauca, L. confusa, or L. dasystyla. But, for the most part, we use whole plant of Lonicera japonica, as a flower bud of it. And, little is known of the original copy of effects of whole plant, except for the 'Bon-Cho-Gang-Mok', which is written the effects of flower of Lonicera japonica are equal to effects of leaves and branch of it. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica on the regulatory mechanism of cytokines, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) for the immunological activities in Raw 264.7 cells. In Raw 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to mimic inflammation, flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica water extracts inhibited nitric oxide production in a dose-dependent manner and abrogated iNOS and COX-2. Flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica water extract did not affect on cell viability. To investigate the mechanism by which flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica water extract inhibits iNOS and COX-2 gene expression, we examined the on phosphorylation of inhibitor ${\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and assessed production of $TNF-{\alpha}$, $interleukin-1{\beta}$$(IL-1{\beta})$ and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Results provided evidence that flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica inhibited the production of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and activated the phosphorylation of inhibitor ${\kappa}B{\alpha}$ in Raw 264.7 cells activated with LPS. These findings suggest that flower and whole plant of Lonicera japonica can produce anti-inflammatory effect, which may play a role in adjunctive therapy in Gram-negative bacterial infections, respectively.
Optimization of submerged culture conditions for the production of exo-biopolymer from Paecilomyces japonica was studied. Maltose, yeast extract and potassium phosphate were the most suitable sources of carbon, nitrogen, and inorganic salt, respectively, for both production of the exo-biopolymer and mycelial growth. The optimal culture conditions in flask culture were pH 5.0, $25^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm in a meidum containing of 30 g maltose, 6 g yeast extract, 2 g polypeptone, 0.5 g $K_2HPO_4$, 0.2 g $KH_2PO_4$, 0.2 g $MnSo_4\;{\cdot}\;5H_2O$, 0.2 g $MgSO_4\;{\cdot}\;7H_2O$ in 1-L distilled water. Exo-biopolymer production and mycelial growth in the suggested medium were significantly increased in a 2.5-L jar fermentor, where the maximum biopolymer concentration was 8 g/1.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the gluing characteristics of poly vinyl acetate emulsion adhesive(PVAc) on the Cryptomeria japonica laminated boards. This sample trees are major planting species and have been planted in southern district for a long time. The optimum gluing conditions for laminated board were summarized as follows; the amount of spreading glue, assembly time, clamping pressure, and clamping time for PVAc resin were $200g/m^2$, 10min., $5kg/cm^2$, and 6hrs., respectively, and the relative formulae between extension ratio(x) and block shear strength(y) was $y=-9.6x+85.2(R^2=0.95)$.
We have constructed the Rice Genome Information Service System (RGISS), which is an information service system of the Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica (rice) genome, using the released version of rice Build 3.0 pseudomolecules based on the Ensembl architecture. The nonredundant library, composed of 3,360 clones of BACs, PACs, and fosmids, was used to construct supercontigs. RGISS contains 50,717 annotated genes from GenBank, 56,161 predicted genes from FgeneSH, and information on 9,587 markers, which includes STS, SSR, and EST-based RFLP. The 20,180 ESTs sequenced by the Korea National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (NIAB) were aligned and mapped into 168,792 exons. By gene ontology analysis, the classified protein numbers in the rice genome were 6158, 4531, and 12,364 proteins, which were mapped to molecular function, cellular component, and biological process, respectively.
Sleep is an essential biological process of which the underlying regulatory mechanisms involve numerous anatomical structures and biochemical substances that can be compromised by stress and the immune system. Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system (CNS). It is well established that activation of $GABA_A$ receptors promotes sleep. L. brevis BJ20 fermentation of sea tangle and oysters resulted in stress reduction and sleep inducing effects. This is the first study to report that GABA has the ability to induce sleep related hormones in mice; therefore, it has potential use as a natural sleep aid. These results suggested that sea tangle and oysters fermented by L. brevis BJ20 can be used as potential agents for stress reduction and sleep promotion.
