  • Nonlinear dynamic equation of a 4-axis rigid rotor supported by two an-isotropic magnetic bearings is derived via Hamilton's principle. It is transformed to a state-space form for the standard Η$_{\infty}$ control problem. we present a robust Η$_{\infty}$ control design methods of continuous and discrete LMI-based approaches and improve performance using loopshaping.

  • A rigid-viscoplastic finite element method has been used for modeling superplastic stretch/blow process design to improve thickness distribution. Punch velocity-time relationship of the stretch forming and pressure-time cycle of the blow forming for a given strain rate are calculated. A superplastic material is assumed to be isotropic and a plane-strain line element based on membrane approximation is employed for the formulation. The effects of the width, corner radius and height of the punch during stretch forming are examined for the final thickness distribution, and the process design to improve thickness distribution can be established.

  • In this paper, a number of double-layered microwave integrated circuits (MIC) have been designed and analyzed based on a developed finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solver. The solver was first validated through comparisons of the computed results with those previously published throughout the literature. Subsequently, various double-layered MIC printed on both isotropic and anisotropic substrates and superstrates, which are frequently encountered in printed circuit boards (PCB), have been designed and analyzed. It was found that in addition to protecting circuits, the added superstrate layer can increase freedoms of design and improve circuit performance, and that the FDTD is indeed a robust and versatile tool for multilayer circuit design.

  • In this paper, we perform a two-stage, kinematic optimal design for 3 degree-of-freedom excavator system which consists of boom, arm, and bucket. The objective of the first stage is to find the optimal joint parameters which maximize the force-torque transmission ratio between the hydraulic actuator and the rotating joint. The objective of the first stage is to find the optimal link parameters which maximize the isotropic characteristic throughout the workspace. It is illustrated that performances of the optimized excavator are improved compared to those of HE280 excavator, with respect to the described performace index and maximum load handling capacity.

  • This paper deals with the topology optimized design of the riser support structures for floating production storage and offloading units (FPSOs) under global and local loading conditions. For a preliminary study and validation of the numerical approach, a simplified plate under static loading is first evaluated with the representative topology optimization methods, the Homogenization Design Method (HDM) and Density Method (DM) or Simple Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP). In the context of the corresponding riser support structures, the design problem is formulated such that structure shapes based on design domain variables are determined by minimizing the compliance subject to a mass target, considering the stress criterion. An initial design model is generated based on an actual FPSO riser support configuration. The topology optimization results present improved design performances under various loading conditions, while staying within the allowable limit of the offshore area.

  • Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.

  • This paper presents the optimum load-speed diagram evaluation for a linear micromotor, including multitude cantilever piezoelectric bimorphs, briefly. Each microbeam in the mechanism can be actuated in both axial and flexural modes simultaneously. For this design, we consider quasi-static and linear conditions, and a relatively new numerical method called the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) is introduced here. For this purpose, after finding an optimum volume fraction for piezoelectric layers through a standard numerical method such as quadratic finite element method, the relevant load-speed curves of the optimized micromotor are examined and compared by deterministic topology optimization (DTO) design. In this regard, to avoid the overly stiff behavior in FEM modeling, a numerical method known as the cell-based smoothed finite element method (CS-FEM, as a branch of S-FEM) is applied for our DTO problem. The topology optimization procedure to find the optimal design is implemented using a solid isotropic material with a penalization (SIMP) approximation and a method of moving asymptotes (MMA) optimizer. Because of the higher efficiency and accuracy of S-FEMs with respect to standard FEMs, the main micromotor characteristics of our final DTO design using a softer CS-FEM are substantially improved.

  • Micro engine that includes Micro scale combustor is fabricated. Design target was focused on the observation of combustion driven actuation in MEMS scale. Combustor design parameters are somewhat less than the size recommended by feasibility test. The engine structure is fabricated by isotropic etching of the photosensitive glass wafers. Electrode formed by electroplating of the Nickel. Photosensitive glass can be etched isotropically with almost vertical angle. Bonding and assembly of structured photosensitive glass wafer form the engine. Combustor size was determined to be 1 mm scale. Movable piston is engraved inside the wafer. Ignition was done by nickel spark plug which was electroplated with thickness of 40 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The wafers were bonded by epoxy that resists high temperature. In firing test due to the bonding method and design tolerance pressure buildup by reaction was not confirmed. But ignition, flame propagation and actuation of micro structure from the reaction was observed. From the result basement of design and fabrication technology was obtained.

  • In this study, a mixed-interpolated tensorial component 4 nodes method (MITC4) is treated as a numerical analysis model for topology optimization using multiple materials assigned within Reissner-Mindlin plates. Multi-material optimal topology and shape are produced as alternative plate retrofit designs to provide reasonable material assignments based on stress distributions. Element density distribution contours of mixing multiple material densities are linked to Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) as a design model. Mathematical formulation of multi-material topology optimization problem solving minimum compliance is an alternating active-phase algorithm with the Gauss-Seidel version as an optimization model of optimality criteria. Numerical examples illustrate the reliability and accuracy of the present design method for multi-material topology optimization with Reissner-Mindlin plates using MITC4 elements and steel materials.
