The isothermal oxidation behaviour of commercial superalloys produced in Korea was investigated by using Cahn-2000 microbalance in air at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. The effect of alloying elements on the isothermal oxidation was studied by examination of the oxide structures, their morphologies, and EDS linescanning and mapping of cross-section of oxidized specimens. Generally, external Cr2O3 films were formed on all alloy surface, but were not pure, The effect on the oxidation behaviour of refractory elements such as Nb, Mo in Inconel 718 was considered to be deleterious, and the formation of internal Al oxide in Inconel 601 was beneficial.
The degradation mechanisms of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were investigated in different thermal fatigue condition in terms of microstructural analyses. The isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests were conducted to atmospheric plasma sprayed-TBCs on NIMONIC 263 substrates. The delamination occurred by the oxide layer formation at the interface, the Ni/Cr-based oxide was formed after Al-based oxide layer grew up to ${\sim}10{\mu}m$ in the isothermal condition. In the cyclic oxidation with dwell time, the failure occurred earlier (500 hr) than in the isothermal oxidation (900 hr) at same temperature. The thickness of Al-based oxide layer of the delaminated specimen in the cyclic condition was ${\sim}4{\mu}m$ and the interfacial cracks were observed. The acoustic emission method revealed that the cracks generated during the cooling step. It was considered that the specimens were prevented from the formation of the Al-based oxide by cooling treatment, and the degradation mode in the cyclic test was dominantly interfacial cracking by the difference of thermal expansion coefficients of the coating layers.
High temperature materials used in the elevated temperature and corrosive atmosphere must have the good oxidation resistance and preserve their own mechanical properties simultaneously. For the oxidation resistance, it is very important to form a protective oxide scale such as $Al_2O_3$ or $Cr_2O_3$ on the substrate. However, the additions of protective oxide forming elements such as Cr and Al in the alloy to enhance its oxidation resistance are limited due to the deleterious effects on their mechanical properties. PECVD(P1asma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) coating processes were employed to improve the oxidation resistance at high temperature. Cr and/or A1 were coated on the substrates of Ni and Inconel 600 at various temperatures of 400, 500, $600^{\circ}C$ and at different conditions of specimen surfaces. Then, coated specimens were exposed to isothermal and cyclic oxidation conditions in air at 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$. In order to enhance the adhesion between the substrate and coated layer, heat treatments of the coated specimens were conducted in a vacuum. At isothermal oxidation experiments, Al-coated Ni specimen showed better oxidation resistance than pure Ni. At cyclic oxidation experiments at $1000^{\circ}C$. Cr and Al-coated specimen showed better oxidation resistance. Cr-coated Inconel 600 had also showed better oxidation resistance due to Cr in the substrate. By PECVD coating process, oxidation resistance could be improved, but it was not improved as expected due to the weakness of the adhesion between the substrate and the coated layer.
The nitridation kinetics of titanium powder were studied by isothermal and non-isothermal (dynamic) methods in high purity nitrogen under I atm pressure. For the comparison with nitridation, the oxidation kinetics of titanium powder were also studied in dry oxygen at I atm pressure. An automatic recording electrobalance was used to measure the weight gain as a function of time and temperature. For the reaction with nitrogen, the nitride was formed at over $700^{\circ}C$. The reaction with nitrogen followed the parabolic rate law, and the activation energy was calculated to be 31 kcal/mol in the isothermal method (above $900^{\circ}C$). The non-stoichiometric TiNx has been synthesized by the nitridation at a proper temperature and time, followed by the homogenizing treatment above $1100^{\circ}C$. In comparison with the stoichiometric $TiN_{1.0}$ and the non-stoichiometric TiNx ($TiN_{0.5}$ and $TiN_{0.65}$), the hot oxidation characteristics of the former is superior to that of the latter. However, both non-stoichiometric nitrides make little difference in the hot oxidation characteristics.
Two types of carbon fiber based high modulus- and isotropic-pitch were exposed to isothermal oxidation in air and $CO_2$ gas and the weight change was measured by TGA apparatus. The kinetic equation was introduced $f=1-{\exp}(-at^b)$ and the constant b was obtained in the range of 1.02~1.68 for the isotropic fiber and obtained 0.91~1.93 for the high modulus fiber respectively. In considering the effect of the atmosphere for isothermal oxidation, the value of the constant b obtained in the carbon dioxide was higher than that obtained in the air. Therefore, it was found that the pitch based carbon fiber shows sigmoidal characteristic when it is oxidized in the carbon dioxide. In addition, it was also found that $k_f = 0.5$, which was reaction constant at f = 0.5, was a very useful parameter for evaluation of the oxidation reactivity of pitch based carbon fibers. According to the consideration, it is suggested that the conversion-time curves of the pitch based carbon fibers are correlated by normalized equation $f=1-{\exp}(-A{\tau}^B)$, where ${\tau}=t/t_f= 0.5$.
Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers have high specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal resistance, and thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, they have been increasingly widely used in various spheres including leisure, aviation, aerospace, military, and energy applications. However, if exposed to air at high temperatures, they are oxidized, thus weakening the properties of carbon fibers and carbon composite materials. As such, it is important to understand the oxidation reactions of carbon fibers, which are often used as a reinforcement for composite materials. PAN-based carbon fibers T300 and T700 were isothermally oxidized in air, and microstructural changes caused by oxidation reactions were examined. The results showed a decrease in the rate of oxidation with increasing burn-off for both T300 and T700 fibers. The rate of oxidation of T300 fibers was two times faster than that of T700 fibers. The diameter of T700 fibers decreased linearly with increasing burn-off. The diameter of T300 also decreased with increasing burn-off but at slower rates over time. Cross-sectional observations after oxidation reactions revealed hollow cores in the longitudinal direction for both T300 and T700 fibers. The formation of hollow cores after oxidation can be traced to differences in the fabrication process such as the starting material and final heat treatment temperature.
Ti-48AI(at.%) 모재위에 RF magnetron sputtering을 이용하여 AI-21Ti-23Cr(at.%) 조성의 박막을 코팅하였다.
The oxidation behavior of a two-phase(Ti3Al+TiAl) intermetallic compound, Ti-33.8wt%Al, has been in-vestigated in air at 800, 900 and $^1000{\circ}C$. Though the isothermal oxidation behavior followed a parabolic law up to 100$0^{\circ}C$ indicating that protective oxide scales were formed, the cyclic oxidation behavior followed a lin-ear law in the entire temperature range tested because flaky or stratified scales were usually spalled from the surface during cooling. During oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$, the alloy showed excellent oxidation resistance because continuous protective Al2O3 films were formed on the outermost surface of the alloy. However, above $900^{\circ}C$, the oxidation resistance of the alloy was decreased gradually because relatively non-protective TiO2 scales as well as some of Al2O3 scales were formed on the outer oxide scale. The oxidation mechanism of the alloy at different temperature was proposed.
