For a cosmetic plant wastewater containing surfactants of high concentration, adsorption treatment by granular activated carbon(GAC) having different pore size distribution was studied. Three sorts GACs were used and regenerated afterwards with methanol. Experiments were composed of batch process and column test for both virgin and regenerated GACs. Following conclusions were drawn from the study: Methylene blue activating substance(MBAS) adsorption data from the batch tests for three GACs are described well by BET isotherm and Freundich isotherm. Simulation with the BET isotherm shows that maximum adsorption appears to be affected not only by specific surface area but also by pore size distribution. Maximum adsorption from the BET isotherm for MBAS appears to diminish as the number of reactivation increases. The diminishing ratio of maximum adsorption appears to decrease as the pore size decreases. Recovery ratio of the methanol by vacuum evaporation from the spent methanol ranges from 95% to 97%.

In this study, we used Brewster-Angle Microscope(BAM) to study on the molecular orientation of monolayer on the water surface. The behaviors of molecules on three different subphase have been observed. Reproducible $\pi$-A isotherm have been obtained only on information about phase transition by molecular area. BAM facilitates the observation of morphology by optical anisotropy and thickness in monolayer and multilayers as BAM is shown to be sensitive to anisotropy of film. Every transition was found by BAM technique, either as a dramatic change in degree of contrast or as a sudden alteration of molecular action and $\pi$-A isotherm.
The purpose of this research is evaluation of adsorption capacity of the cast for TCE comparing with the yellow clay. Furthermore, the experimental data was fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm and was found to be apllicable to the adsorption isotherm equation. The soil bed reactor used in this study was made of glass(10 cm in diameter, 100 cm in depth). The cast and yellow clay used as adsorbents were screened with 8-20 mesh mecanically. Results from Equilibrium test with adsorbents showed that the equibrium time of the cast and yellow clay was 9min independent of the amount of the adsorbents. The adsorption efficiencys of the cast and yellow clay for TCE was 66.3% and 56.2%, respectively. In the application of Freundlich isotherm, 1/n of the cast and yellow clay were 0.786 and 0.704, respectively. These results showed that the cast was more available than the yellow clay as TCE adsorbent. The best adsorption capacity was showed at 0% moisture content, 70 ppm inlet concentration and 25$^{\circ}$C temperature.
This study reported the adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto activated carbon prepared from Myristica Fragrans shell (MFS AC) over independent variables of contact time, activating chemical (NaOH) concentration, initial adsorbate concentration, initial pH of adsorbate solution and adsorption temperature. The MFS AC structure, morphology and total surface area were characterized by FTIR, SEM and BET techniques, respectively. The Cu(II) ions adsorption on the MFS AC (activated using 0.5 M NaOH) fitted best to Freundlich adsorption isotherm (FAI), and the FAI constant obtained was 0.845 L/g at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5. It followed the pseudo first order of adsorption kinetic (PFOAK) model, and the PFOAK based adsorption capacity was 107.65 mg/g. Thermodynamic study confirmed the Cu(II) ions adsorption should be exothermic and non-spontaneous process, physical adsorption should be taken place. The total surface area and pore volume based on BET analysis was $99.85m^2/g$ and 0.086 cc/g, respectively.
Despite the importance of chloride binding, it is very difficult to measure the binding capacity, in particular, for the concrete body in an existing structure: in fact, the measurement procedure for chloride binding is much influenced by the environmental condition such as temperature, fineness of sample and pore water extraction techniques. The present study concerns the quantification of the binding capacity of chloride ions in concrete using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Once the binding isotherm of chlorides was determined by the Langmuir isotherm, as a function of the W/C, curing age and binder type, the generation of bound chlorides (i.e. Friedel's salt) was simultaneously ensured by the XRD technique. The amount of bound chloride was then determined by analyzing the peak intensity for the bound chlorides in the XRD curve. It was found that an increase in the curing age and a decrease in the W/C resulted in an increase in the binding capacity.
Iron oxide (ferrihydrite, hematite, and magnetite) coated silica gels were prepared using a low-cost, easily-scalable and straightforward method as the adsorbent material for arsenic removal application. Adsorption of the anionic form of arsenic oxyacids, arsenite ($AsO^{2-}$) and arsenate ($AsO{_4}^{3-}$), onto hematite coated silica gel was fitted against non-linear 3-parameter-model Sips isotherm and 2-parameter-model Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption kinetics of arsenic could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and value of adsorption energy derived from non-linear Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm suggests chemical adsorption. Although arsenic adsorption process was not affected by the presence of sulfate, chloride, and nitrate anions, as expected, bicarbonate and silicate gave moderate negative effects while the presence of phosphate anions significantly inhibited adsorption process of both arsenite and arsenate. When the actual efficiency to remove arsenic was tested against 1 L of artificial arsenic-contaminated groundwater (0.6 mg/L) in the presence competing anions, the reasonable amount (20 g) of hematite coated silica gel could reduce arsenic concentration to below the WHO permissible safety limit of drinking water of $10{\mu}g/L$ without adjusting pH and temperature, which would be highly advantageous for practical field application.
In this study, zeolite (Z-C1) was synthesized using a fusion/hydrothermal method from coal fly ash. The morphological structures of Z-C1 were confirmed to be highly crystalline with a cubic crystal structure. Exchange capacities of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions in a single and a mixed solution reached equilibrium within 120 min. The exchange kinetics of these ions were well predicted by the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The exchange isotherms of the $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions matched the Langmuir isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum cation exchange capacities ($q_m$) obtained by the Langmuir isotherm model were 2.11 mmol/g (84.52 mg/L) and 1.13 mmol/g (27.39 mg/L) for the $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions, respectively.
BACKGROUND: Plastics that are used in our daily lives largely end up in the environment. In agricultural environments, plastic wastes and microplastics can be found due to the uses and improper management of plastic products (e.g., vinyl greenhouses and mulching vinyl). Microplastics can also interact with contaminants in the agricultural environment. Therefore, this study was set to investigate the sorption characteristics of tetracycline, one of widely used antibiotics, on microplastics. METHODS AND RESULTS: The sorption tests were carried out with the tetracycline solutions (0-30 mg L-1) and microplastic films prepared from low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The residual tetracycline concentrations were analyzed and fitted to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The tetracycline sorption patterns on LDPE and PVC films were described better with the Freundlich isotherm model than the Langmuir isotherm model. The isotherm model parameters suggested that the maximum sorption amount of tetracyline was greater for PVC, while the sorption affinity was greater for LDPE. CONCLUSION(S): Different types of microplastics can have different sorption characteristics of tetracycline. Therefore, there is a need for continuous research on the interaction of various types and shapes of microplastics and contaminants in the environment.
Lead(II) removal efficiency by natural kaolinite was investigated through laboratory experiments. This study was conducted in two phases-sorption and desorption. In the adsorption study, the influence of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherm and various parameters such as pH, temperature, coexisting other heavy metal ions on the lead adsorption was investigated. And desorption study was carried out in order to find the re-usability of kaolinite as an adsorbent. The results of the study are as follows. 1. Sorption kinetics was investigated under the condition of 2.5 mg/l adsorbent concentration, pH 6.5$\pm$0.05, temperature $30\pm 0.5\circ$C, initial lead(II) concentration 25 mg/l. Adsorption rate was initially rapid and the extent of adsorption arrived at adsorption equilibrium with 73% adsorption efficiency in an hour. 2. The sorption isotherm experiment was made with different initial lead(II) concentration. A linearized Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As a result, Freundlich constants, the sorption intensity (1/n) was 0.47 and the measure of sorption (k) was 2.44. So, it was concluded that sorption of lead(II) by kaolinite is effective. 3. The effect of pH on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that at a pH of 3, only 6% of the total lead(II) was adsorbed and at a pH 9, 97% of the lead(II) was removed. And the effect of temperature on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that as the temperature increased, the amount of lead(II) sorption per unit weight of kaolinite increased. But the effect was minor (p<0.05). 4. Sorption isotherm of lead coexisting cadmium (II) or zinc (II) was lower than that of lead itself. It was caused by the result of competitive sorption to adsorption site. And there was no difference between the sorption isotherm of cadmium and zinc. 5. In desorption studies, only 5.12% desorption took place in distilled water, while 52.08% in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. Consequently used kaolinite could be regenerated by hydrochoric acid.

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the immobilization of the laboratory waste sludge, mainly from chemical oxygen demand (COD) waste, using cementitious binders. The binders were: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), and lime-Rice Husk Ash(RHA) cement. The economic evaluation was done for three different kinds of cementitious binders, namely, OPC, Portalnd Rice Husk Ash Cement (PRHAC) which contained rice husk ash 50 percent by dry weight, and lime-RHA cement. The result showed that lime-RHA cement was the cheapest. The applicability of Freundlich's desorption isotherm was studied to assess the teachability of sludges. The teachability of cement mortars was found to follow the desorption isotherms. Therefore, it was concluded that based on this test, the leachate concentrations of the solidified heavy metals could be predicted, approximately by the Freundlich's isotherm desorption modeling.
