Pervaporation experiments of ternary ethanol/isopropanol/water mixtures were performed using poly(dimethyl siloxane)(PDMS) membrane at $45^{\circ}C$ and the mutual effects of ethanol and isopropanol on the permeation characteristics were studied. Compared to the case of the binary aqueous ethanol or isopropanol solutions, the existence of ethanol or isopropanol in the ternary mixtures resulted in the depression of each other's permeation rate. The depression effect of ethanol on the isopropanol permeation was more considerable than the depression effect of isopropanol on the ethanol permeation. These decreases in the permeation rate were thought to be due to the larger interactions between permeants than the plasticizing effects of ethanol or isopropanol on the polymer membrane. The strong interactions between permeants reduced the driving forces for both ethanol and isopropanol permeation in the ternary mixtures.
The conductances of dilute solutions of LiCl, NaCl and KCl in a series of isopropanol-water mixtures were determined at $30^{\circ}C$. The values of equivalent conductance agreed well with Debye-Huckel-Onsager equation and the limiting equivalent conductance was greatly reduced as the isopropanol content of the solvent was increased in accord with predictions based on solvent viscosity and dielectric properties. Also, the limiting equivalent conductance increased in sequence ${\Lambda}_{0,LiCl} < {\Lambda}_{0,NaCl} < {\Lambda}_{0,KCl} in 0.0, 0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction isopropanol, but {\Lambda}_{0,LiCl} < {\Lambda}_{0,KCl} < {\Lambda}_{0,NaCl} in 0.3 mole fraction ispropanol. The maximum Walden product, {\Lambda}_{0{\eta}0}$ was found in 0.1 mole fraction isopropanol for all electrolytes.
Silica Aerogels with the density and porosity of 0.1g/cm3 and 96% were synthesized by two different supercri-tical drying processes (i.e additional solvent and intial pressure methods) Isoptopanol was chosen as sol-gel and supercritical drying solvents in order to synthesize aerogels at the lower temperature and pressure because the critical values of isopropanol are lower than those of methanol and ethanol commonly used. The P-V-T relationship of isopropanol was experimentally described for optimizing supercritical drying conditions such as the amount of extra solvent and supercritical drying temperature and pressure. In the addional solvent method monolithic and transparent aerogels were obtained by supercritical drying at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 900 psing after 40% of the reactor volume was filled with isopropanol. Crack-free aerogels were synthesized at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1100~1200 psig by the initial pressure method with an intial nitrogen gas pressure of 400 psig and the isopropanol amount of 5% of the reactor volume.
In this study, cellulose acetate (CA) / nylon66 (NYL66) (95/5) blend membranes with different thicknesses were prepared by a solvent evaporation method. The effects of membrane thickness (almost $7-25{\mu}m$), feed concentration (70-95 wt.% isopropanol), and feed temperature ($30-60^{\circ}C$) were investigated on the performance of membrane in the separation of isopropanol-water mixtures. With regard to the results of sorption experiments, it was found that the increase of feed temperature enhanced the overall sorption while by increasing feed concentration, the overall sorption passed through a maximum value at 70 wt. % isopropanol (IPA). The best separation factor 3080.51 was gained at high isopropanol concentration 95 wt.%, low feed temperature $30^{\circ}C$, and high membrane thickness $24.62{\mu}m$. Regarding the pervaporation separation index, the obtained results showed that proper values for the thickness of membrane, feed temperature, and isopropanol concentration in feed were $24.62{\mu}m$, $40^{\circ}C$, and 70 wt.%, respectively.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the $60\%$ isopropanol extract of soybean(Glycine max [L.] Merr.) seed revealed two abundant proteins with molecular masses of 19 and 10 kDa. Amino acid analysis revealed that the isopropanol-extractable protein fraction was rich in cysteine. Two-dimensional gel electro-phoretic analysis indicated that the 19kDa and 10kDa proteins had pI of 4.2 and 4.0 respectively. Peptide mass fingerprints of trypsin digests of the two proteins obtained using matrix-assisted, laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectroscopy revealed the 19kDa protein was Kunitz trypsin inhibitor and the 10kDa protein was Bowman-Birk proteinase inhibitor. When resolved under non-denaturing conditions, the isopropanol-extracted proteins inhibited trypsin and chymotrypsin activity. Results presented in this study demonstrate that isopropanol extraction of soybean seed could be used as a simple and rapid method to obtain a protein fraction enriched in Kunitz trypsin and Bowman-Birk proteinase inhibitors. Since proteinase inhibitors are rich in sulfur amino acids and are putative anticarcinogens, this rapid and inexpensive isolation procedure could facilitate efforts in nutrition and cancer research.
Normal-phase HPLC was used to separate the useful phospholipids, PE, PI and PC in soybean lecithin. The mobile phase used in this experiments were haxane, isopropanol and methanol, the gradient mode was applied as the three components could not be separated by the isocratic mode. To find the optimum separation condition, the concentration profiles of effluents were calculated from the plate theory and the capacity factor in step-gradient mode. From the calculated results, PE was separated with hexane/isopropanol/methanol = 90/5/5vol.% in isocratic mode and PI and PC were resolved in the conditions of 10min gradient time and the second mobile phase of hexane/isopropanol/methanol=50/20/30vol.% in step-gradient mode. The agreement between the calculated concentration profile and experimental data was good, so the methodology developed in this work can be used to obtain the optimum separation condition in gradient mode.
Pervaporation experiments of isopropanol-water mixtures through a polydimethytsiloxane(PDMS) membrane were carried out at 35$^{\circ}$C and the effect of isopropanol concentration on the separation characteristics was investigated. The total permeation rate showed the largest deviation from the ideal permeation rate at the isoprpanol volume fraction from 0.5 to 0.7, which resulted from the interaction effect between permeants. The plasticizing effect of isopropanol enhanced the permeation of water, while the existance of water resulted in the depression of isopropanol permeation. Both the permeation rate and the selectivity were predicted using Flory-Huggins thermodynamics and modified Maxwell-Stefan equation. The concentration-dependent diffusion coefficients were expressed by Vignes equation. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between isopropanol and water was calculated using excess Gibbs energy correlation and the interaction parameters between liquid and polymer membrane were determined by equilibrium swelling experiments. The predicted permeation rates were in accord with the experimental ones within maximum error range of 35 %. The predicted permeation selectivities were in good agreement with the experimental values.
The sorption amounts of butanol/water and isopropanol/water solution on the surface modified with FASs (fluoroalkylsilanes) hydrophobic membrane were measured and analyzed using Hansen's solubility parameters. The difference of the solubility parameter of butanol (${\delta}_t=20.4$) and that of the surface modified with FASs hydrophobic membrane (${\delta}_t=16.9$) was greater than the case of isopropanol (${\delta}_t=24.6$), which might explain the result that the sorption amount of butanol was much higher than that of isopropanol. We might also explain the effect of the polar force (${\delta}_p$) on the sorption amount. The difference (${\Delta}$) between FASs polar force (${\delta}_p=4.6$) and butanol polar force (${\delta}_p=6.3$) was much smaller than that between FASs polar force (${\delta}_p=4.6$) and isopropanol polar force (${\delta}_p=9.0$), which meant that the interaction of butanol-FASs was much greater than that of isopropanol-FASs, and resulted in greater sorption amount of butanol on the FASs. This study showed Hansen's solubility parameters might be used for analysis of sorption characteristics of alcohol on membrane and solubility of solute in solvent.

Polysulfone (PS) membranes were prepared by the phase inversion process using water or isopropanol as nonsolvent. The Flory-Huggins theory for a ternary system nonsolvent/solvent/polymer is applied to describe the thermodynamic equilibria of the components. The calculated ternary phase equilibria show that demixing of a PS binary solution with n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) will be fast in a water coagulation bath and will be delayed in an isopropanol bath. The prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, gas adsorption-desorption measurement, and permeability test. The membrane, which is precipitated by fast demixing in a water bath, has nodular structures in the skin region and includes finger-like cavities in the sublayer. The membrane coagulated by isopropanol has a very dense and thick skin structure, which is formed by delayed demixing. The membrane coagulated by isopropanol showed considerably lower pore volume and surface area compared to that observed with water coagulation method. With dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and 2-3 wt% of water, the solution can show the liquid-liquid phase separation due to agglomation of the polymer-lean phase from the homogeneous solution. The membranes, which were coagulated near an equilibrium state, show the large (micron size) round pores in the whole membranes. The pores do not contribute the permeation characteristics.
