  • Microbially induced calcite precipitation is a naturally occurring biological process in which microbes produce calcite on the surface of the microorganisms by urease activity. In order to collect calcite forming bacteria (CFB) in Korea, we isolated 343 putative CFB strains from various environments over three year period (2011~2013) and selected 100 CFB strains. Average of calcite productivity was 10.56 mg/mL. And average of ammonium concentration by urease activity was $8.00{\mu}M$. Two useful CFB strains of the others were analyzed by 16S rRNA and identified as Sporosarcina sp. and Viridibacillus arenosi. The CFB strains presented in this study are indigenous microorganisms in Korea and they are expected to be applicable to a variety of environments in the country.

  • S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) is essential substrate for biological methylation reactions. The present work describes a reoptimized procedure of SAM preparation in laboratory scale by the method of yeast fermentation. The fermentation medium enriched with methionine and the culture conditions were reoptimized. The isolation steps consisted of 5 steps including extractions, precipitations, and chromatography. This improved procedure over original method provides relatively high yield of biologically active product within a 4 day-period.

  • Various base isolation systems, which are widely used, are compared for aseismic performances of multi-span continuous bridge. They are the P-F, RB, LRB, R-FBI and EDF systems. Sensitivity analyses are carried out to determine the design parameters of various devices. The design parameters, natural period of the isolated bridge and friction coefficient of the bearing, are determined by the reciprocal relationship between displacement and bending moment of the structure. Then the relative effectiveness of the bearings is described. Bridge with the R-FBI system shows the smallest peak displacement of deck whereas bridge with the EDF system shows the smallest peak bending moment of the lower end of pier in numerical examples. Furthermore, the peak responses of bridge with the friction type bearing are less sensitive to substantial variations in the frequency range and intensity of the ground excitation than those with the rubber type bearing.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance for a seismically isolated main control room (MCR) of nuclear power plant. MCR was isolated by spherically shaped friction pendulum system (FPS). The FPS provided the simplest means of achieving long period in the isolation system under low gravity load. Some parametric studies were conducted with different properties of FPS. When the coefficient of friction in the sliding surface of FPS is low, the seismic performance of MCR was satisfactory However, the lateral displacement in the isolation level was rather large. To restrict this displacement into adequate range, a fluid viscous dampers were used.

  • The concept of base isolation for equipment is well known. Its application in buildings and structures is rather challenging. Introduction of horizontal flexibility at the base helps in proper energy dissipation at the base level thus reducing the seismic demand of the super structure to be considered during design. The present study shows the results of a series of numerical simulation studies on seismic responses of secondary system (SS) housed in non-isolated and base-isolated primary structures (PS) including equipment-structure interactions. For this study the primary structure consists of two similar single bay three-store reinforced cement concrete (RCC) Frame building, one non-isolated with conventional foundation and another base isolated with Lead plug bearings (LPB) constructed at IIT Guwahati, while the secondary system is modeled as a steel frame. Time period of the base isolated building is higher than the fixed building. Due to the presence of isolator, Acceleration response is significantly reduced in both (X and Y) direction of Building. It have been found that when compared to fixed base building, the base isolated building gives better performance in high seismic prone areas.

  • Seismic isolation has been studied continuously as a solution of the seismic engineering to reduce the sectional forces and the damages of structures caused by earthquakes. To certify reliable design and installation of the seismic isolation systems, seismic isolation bearings should be fabricated under well planned quality control process, and proper evaluation tests for their seismic performance should be followed. In this study, shear property evaluation tests for the lead rubber bearings(LRB) and the rubber bearings(RB) were implemented and the temperature dependency tests were also implemented to evaluate the changes of shear properties according to the changes of temperature. After evaluation tests, the measured shear properties were compared to their design values and their deviation was analyzed comparing with the allowable error ranges specified in Highway Bridge Design Specifications. These results showed that a considerable number of isolation bearings have so large deviations from their design values that their error ranges were over or very close to the allowable ranges. And the test results for temperature dependency showed that the shear properties of isolation bearings would be changed in great degree by the change of temperature during their service period. If these two types of changes in their shear properties are superposed, it would possible that the changes of shear properties from their original design values are over than 50%.

  • Bojungiki-tang is a traditional oriental medicine to boost the immune system. In this study, we investigated the effects of Bojungiki-tang by withdrawal of isolation of VRE colonization. Four cases of post-stroke patients with VRE colonization took Bojungiki-tang and continuously were followed up with stool cultures. After three times negative stool VRE, we withdrew isolation of VRE colonization. One case patient was diagnosed with VRE colonization in another hospital and had no withdrawal during that period. He was admitted to Kyung-hee University Oriental Medicine where he took Bojungiki-tang. After three times negative stool VRE, we withdrew isolation of the patient. These results demonstrate that Bojungiki-tang is effective on boosting immunity level. Further studies are needed to better characterize this protective effect of Bojungiki-tang.

  • Purpose: In this study influenza A (H1N1) infection control performance and stress in nurses were surveyed, to identify factors influencing stress for the nurses, and to provide basic materials for promoting infectious disease control by nurses. Method: The participants were 447 nurses who had worked at isolation clinics and/or isolation rooms in hub hospitals in the Honam region during the period of the outbreak of 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus. Data were collected in February 2010 using self-report questionnaires. Results: The performance of participants from clinics was high for 'helping patients wearing masks', but low for 'maintaining distance over 1 meter among waiting patients'. The performance of participants from hospital rooms was high for 'putting a surgical mask on a patient going out of the room', but low for 'keeping patients' family out of the room'. The participants' stress was higher in those younger and less experienced nurses, those working at a hospital with 500-999 beds, those working at both isolation clinics and rooms, and those working at a clinic longer. Conclusion: In order to lower nurses' stress from working at isolation clinics/rooms for infectious diseases, we may need to deploy experienced nurses and limit their working days to five or less.

  • An experimental study, which included four 305mm-diameter test shafts, one reference shaft with standard design and three test shafts with isolation tubes, is described. The soil was also soil heave and shrinkage that occur during suction changes at the field site. The test shafts were monitored for a period of about 18 months. Maximum ground movements exceeding 35mm were observed. Movements of only 1 to 2mm were observed in the test shafts with isolation tubes, while movements of 4 to 5mm were observed in the reference shaft. A simple computing model was developed to predict, based on suction changes, the maximum amount of ground heave. Relationship among suction. total stress, and volumetric strain was abtained in the laborstory. This relationship, used as inputs to the predictive model, enabled the computation of the maximum ground heave.
