Is. Dae Heucksan-do and Is. Heucksan-do and Is. Hong-do are located in the southwestern, apart 110km from Mockpo city, Korea., and the spider fauna of this area has never been explored. The author collected the spiders from these Islands in August 1974. Findings were; 1) 83 species of spiders belonging to 17 families, including 5 undetermined species. 2) Leptoneta sp., Carrhotus sp. (A), Marpissa sp. and Synagelides sp. are reserved for future study. 3) The materials were not sufficient for general discussion and conclusions of the spider fauna of these Islands. However, results can be summarized as follows: 7 northern species $8.9\%$ 9 southern species $11.5\%$, 4 cosmopolitan $5.1\%$ 4) The common species of mainland China were 41 $51.9\%$. 5) As the result of this survey, the spider fauna of this area is similar to that of the Is. Cheju-do and Is. Tsushima, in the south eastern area, and have much more common to China than any another area in Korea.
Five islands (Sinjindo, Mado, Daenanjido, Wonsando, and Sapsido) and the coastal area (Muchangpo) in Chungnam, Korea, were selected to determine the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Soil-inhabiting AM fungi were isolated and identified on the basis of morphological characteristics and sequence analyses of 18s rDNA. The differences in the fungal community structures were compared among sites. As a result, 24 species of AM fungi were identified, of which two species of AM fungi, Acaulospora brasiliensis and Redeckera fulvum, were isolated for the first time in Korea. This study revealed that AM fungal spore abundance was low and the genus Acaulospora was dominant in most of the islands. AM fungal community structures in five Islands were highly similar. However, the coastal area, Muchangpo, had different AM fungal community structure from the islands.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based electronic devices are widely used for various applications in large area electronics, biomedical wearable interfaces and implantable circuitry where flexibility and/or stretchability are required. A few fabrication methods of electronic devices directly on PDMS substrate have been reported. However, it is well known that micro-cracks appear in the metal layer and in the lithography pattern on a PDMS substrate. To solve the above problems, a few studies for fabrication of stiff platform on PDMS substrate have been reported. Thin-film islands of a stiff region are fabricated on an elastomeric substrate, and electronic devices are fabricated on these stiff islands. When the substrate is stretched, the deformation is mainly accommodated by the substrate, and the stiff islands and electronic devices experience relatively small strains. Here, we report a new method to achieve stiff islands structures on an elastomeric substrate at a various thickness, as the platform for stretchable electronic devices. The stiff islands were defined by conventional photolithography on a stress-free elastomeric substrate. This technique can provide a practical strategy for realizing large-area stretchable electronic circuits, for various applications such as stretchable display or wearable electronic systems.
A faunal study on the marine decapods of Gogunsan Islands located in the western part of South Korea was performed during the period from August 3 to August 5 in 2003. As a result of the present study, a total 42 species in 17 families (Macrura: four species in two families, Anomura: nine species in four families, Brachyura: 29 species in 11 families) were identified. Of these, two species of shrimp, Athanas sp. and Alpheus sp., are new to Korea. Including these two species, total 20 species in 10 families are newly known to Gogunsan Islands. Fifty two species in 19 families were previously known to occur in this area. Therefore, a total 72 species in 24 families of decapods are now known to occur in Gogunsan Islands. Of the species collected in the present study, Palaemon (Palaemon) serrifer (Stimpson, 1860) in shrimps, Macrophthalmus japonicus De Haan, 1835 living at mud area and Scopimera globosa De Haan, 1835 at sand beach in crabs, and Hapalogaster dentata (De Haan, 1849) in hermits crab were most dominant.

According to Electricity Acceleration Law of Rural Area recently, the needs for replacement of a small scale diesel power generation facility which supplied electricity to 10-50 households Remote Islands has been revealed due to high operating and maintenance cost of Diesel Power Generation. Optimization of electric power system for Small Remote Islands must be made considering the economics, reliability and stability as power sources and estimation of total construction cost of those power stations. For its purpose, an assessment of power generation options such as Photovoltaic, Fuel cell, Wind-hybrid was implemented, economic evaluation of power supply shows the Photovoltaic, Fuel Cell for few household's islands and Diesel, Wind-hybrid for more inhabited islands. Power supplied by Diesel shows the best response to increasing electric demand and system reliability even with its lower economic value. Those who are in charge of power planning have to pay attention to system reliability, stability and operating characteristics of candidate's power supply besides its economics.
This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics, and proper way of protection and management of bird community in Geum river estuary from Nov. 1997 to Oct. 1998. Water was the most dominant factor of habitats. And there were cultivated area, forest, constructed area, reed bed and tidal fiat in study area. Total 104 bird species were recorded in Geum river estuary. Maximum 46 species in Apr. and 51,002 individuals in Feb. were observed. Dabbling ducks used islands and shallow area of river, and tidal flat. Gulls and waders were distributed in estuary and geese were in islands of the upstream and cultivated area of Sipjadeul. For the maintenance, protection and management of bird community in Geum river estuary, diversity of natural habitats, such as, tidal flat, cultivated area, islands and reed bed, should be maintained.

Present work aims to establish the countermeasure for the better maintenance and preservation of insular floristic diversity at the South Sea of Jeollanamdo Province, ROK, where unique ecosystems are under threat due to climate change, anthropogenic disturbance and habitat destruction. Numerous flora reports from 15 inhabited islands and 60 uninhabited islands as well as field survey data are collated for the compilation of floristic data base and island biogeographical analysis. Out of the 1,940 vascular plant species from 180 families occurring in studies areas, 30.1 percentage or 584 plant species are physiognomically belonging to arboreal plants. Average number of species at individual island is numbered about 222 species, but it varies from about 591 species at the inhabited islands to 129 species at the uninhabited islands. Only 0.15 percentage of species with high proportion above 0.9 in its relative occurrence rate occurs at 68 islands and it includes three species, such as Pinus thunbergii, Eurya japonica and Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum. However, about 68 percentage of plant species occurring in study area is confined their distribution to less than seven islands. Presence of high proportion of notable plants in small islands, i.e., 10 critically endangered species compared with 5.5 species in average, 9 endangered species (average 4.2 spp.) at Sonjookdo, and 7 critically endangered species, 8 endangered species at Sokomundo may due to existence of diverse geological and topographical environmental diversity as well as lower human population density and remoteness from the mainland. Since island is small in size and geographically isolated, minor environmental and ecological burdens can cause the critical damages to the diversity of flora and vegetation, urgent island biogeographical research is needed for the scientific conservation and management of island biodiversity.
Every coastal area exhibits its own unique landscape owing to the combination of the natural and cultural processes. Coastal barrier islands well show the cultural aspects of American coastal landscapes. Some 47% of barrier island area was occupied by urban and built-up area in New Jersey, while some 5% in Georgia. Tourism-related development is back to in the mid 19C. in N.J. due to the closeness to heavily populated areas such as New York and Philadelphia. Developments without proper understanding the nature of coastal processes caused New Jerseyization, the destruction of the beauty or naturalness. It was mainly due to the lack of growth-control policies and the foresight for the future coast in the processes of legislation. North Carolina's islands experienced an increase of 269% in urbanized acreage between 1956 and 1976. However, N.C. exercised her wisdom to recover the naturalness of the coastal environs: all engineering structures are banned on the beaches. Nine out of 13 barrier islands in Georgia exist in the wilderness condition owing to her unique history. The remaining islands still experienced the least development. After the Civil War most of Georgian islands were owned by rich families and maintained as wilderness. In the 1970s most of the uninhabited islands were sold or donated to research institutes or governmental agencies.
This study was carried out to illuminate the flora of vascular plants of islands at Chungnam. This study was conducted from March to November, 2010. Based on the voucher, vascular plants of in investigated islands were 105 families 326 genera 454 species 4 subspecies 45 varieties 9 forms, totally 512 taxa. Korean endemic plants were 6 species such as Aster koraiensis, Salix koriyanagi, Indigofera koreana, Hemerocallis taeanensis, Hepatica insularis, Philadelphus schrenckii, rare and endangered plants of designated by Korea Forest Service were 4 taxa, such as Magnolia kobus (planted), Koelreuteria paniculata, Berchemia racemosa var. magna, Glehnia littoralis respectively. Phytogeographical special plants were totally 69 taxa, which were grade I of 50 taxa, grade II of 1 axon, grade III of 11 taxa, grade IV of 4 taxa, and grade V of 3 taxa. 14 southern plants and 4 northern plant by criterion from climate change study were found in this area. Naturalized plants were 17 families 46 taxa, that was 9.1% of total vascular plants in this area. Even naturalized plants has not influence on the islands vegetation. However, regular passenger ferry between islands and increasing of visiter will be affecting vegetation.
Cochlodinium polykrikoides bloom in 1995 was studied with a focus on an unusual coastal environment in the South Sea of Korea. Data on temperature, salinity, and zooplankton biomass during 1965-1998 and nutrients during 1990-1998 and chlorophyll-a during 1995-1998 were used in this study. These data were obtained from the serial oceanographic observations in Korean waters carried out by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. In 1995 the C. polykrikoides bloom began in the coastal area around Narodo Island in August and consequently occurred to the whole coastal area of the South and East Seas of Korea. During June-October 1995, the coastal environment was unusual compared with the long-term means during 1965-1998. In June 1995, sea surface temperature was 1-2$^{\circ}C$ warmer than in other years in all coastal areas, while salinity was high only to the east of Jeju Island. In August 1995, a strong coastal front appeared inshore of a line between Jeju and Tsushima Islands. In particular, a strong coastal front which showed the characteristics of upwelling front occurred in the coastal area around Narodo and Sorido Islands, not only because of a strong intrusion of the Tsushima Warm Current but also because of the upwelling of cold bottom water. Salinity was low in the neighboring waters of western side of Jeju Island. Nutrients and chlorophyll-a were high in the inshore area between Narodo and Sorido Islands in 1995 in contrast with the other years and areas. Zooplankton showed an unusually high abundance in the coastal area in October 1995. We conclude that the Tsushima Warm Current strongly influenced the South Sea of Korea in 1995 and created strong upwelling front bordering cold upwelled water in the coastal area around Narodo and Sorido Islands. It leads us that these physical structures introduce the favorable environment for the development of C. polykrikoides blooms. We suggest that C. polykrikoides has a bio-physical tolerance of high shear and stress and prefers frontal and upwelling relaxed areas as its habitat. We also find that nutrients were not supplied to the coastal area from the offshore where a low salinity water mass with high nutrients appeared around Jeju Island. Because the strong upwelling front protect the reach of offshore low saline water mass. The main source of nutrients was the upwelled water mass in the coastal area of Wando-Narodo-Sorido.
