The present agricultural water quality standards are set by a policy goal. This is intended for water quality management of public water resources, but not for the use of water resources. These standards were not determined by considering the influence of water quality on the safety of agricultural produce and the growth, yield and quality of agricultural crops. Thus, this study was carried out to investigate the influence of irrigation water quality on the growth, yield, and grain quality of rice and acquire fundamental knowledges to set up irrigation water quality standards. The pot experiment was conducted with 4 treatments using irrigation waters with various total nitrogen concentrations (control, 1, 5, 10, 20mg/L) and replicated four times with randomized block design. The results of this study showed that plant height, number of tiller, plant dry weight, the uptake of N, P, and K, and rice protein contents tended to increase as the T-N concentration in irrigation water was increased. In addition, grain yield at T-N 20 mg/L was significantly higher than in the control, but the percentage of head rice was slightly lower due to the increase of green kernel and white belly/core kernel.
Intensive agricultural development in Mexicali valley, Baja-California, Mexico, has induced tremendous strain on the limited water resources. Agricultural water consumption in the valley mainly relies on diversions of the Colorado River, but their water supply is far less than the demand. Hence, the use of groundwater for irrigation purposes has gained considerable attention. To account for these changes, it is important to evaluate surface water and groundwater conditions based on historical water use. This study identified the effects of agricultural activities on groundwater levels and groundwater recharge in the Mexicali valley (in irrigation unit 16) by a comprehensive MODFLOW Farm process (MF-FMP) numerical modeling. The MF-FMP modeling results showed that the water table in the study area is drawn downed, more in eastern areas. The inflow-outflow analysis demonstrated that recharge to the aquifer occurs in response to agricultural supplies. In general, the model provides MF-FMP simulations of natural and anthropogenic components of the hydrologic cycle, the distribution and dynamics of supply and demand in the study area.
This paper describes the use of spatial interpolation for estimating seasonal crop potential evapotranspiration (PET) and irrigation water requirement in unmeasured evaporation gage stations within Edwards Aquifer, Texas using GIS. The Edwards Aquifer area has insufficient data with short observed records and rare gage stations, then, the investigation of data for determining of irrigation water requirement is difficult. This research shows that spatial interpolation techniques can be used for creating more accurate PET data in unmeasured region, because PET data are important parameter to estimate irrigation water requirement. Recently, many researchers are investigating intensively these techniques based upon mathematical and statistical theories. Especially, three techniques have well been used: Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), spline, and kriging (simple, ordinary and universal). In conclusion, the result of this study (Table 1) shows the kriging interpolation technique is found to be the best method for prediction of unmeasured PET in Edwards aquifer, Texas.
This study was conducted by directly sowing Asemi in late April at 30 × 10 cm intervals to determine the optimal irrigation method and irrigation amount to maximize the use of limited agricultural water and to increase the yield when growing rice in a desert climate. Conventional irrigation (Conv.), surface drip irrigation (Sur), subsurface drip irrigation (Sub.), and sprinkler irrigation (Spr.) methods were used. The following amounts of irrigation were tested based on field capacity (0.33 bar): 80% (V/V, FC80), 100% (FC100), and 120% (FC120), and data for 2 years were averaged. The total amount of irrigation by irrigation method was the lowest, at 627 ton/10 a, for Sub. irrigation with the FC80 treatment, which was 60.4% less than the amount of irrigation with the FC120 treatment (1,584 ton/10a). Sub. irrigation with the FC120 treatment gave the greatest amount of rice, at 665 kg/10 a, and this condition obtained a yield of 88.1% (754 kg/10 a) of the yield obtained with the conventional treatment. Therefore, when planting rice in a desert climate, subsurface drip irrigation at 120% of field capacity is considered advantageous to increase water use efficiency and crop yield.

Discharge pattern and water quality were investigated in the drainage water from about 10 ha of groundwater-irrigated paddy field in the growing season of 2001. Total discharge quantity was about 1,117.2 mm in which about 75% was caused by management drainage due to cultural practice of paddy rice farming and the rest by rainfall runoff where total rainfall was about 515 mm. Dry-day sampling data showed wide variations in constituent concentrations with average of 26.14 mg/L, 0.37 mg/L, 3.54 mg/L at the inlet, and 43.60 mg/L, 0.34 mg/L, 3.58 mg/L at the outlet for CO $D_{cr}$ , T-P, and T-N, respectively. Wet-day sampling data demonstrated that generally CO $D_{cr}$ followed the discharge pattern and T-P was in opposite to the discharge pattern, but T-N did not show apparent pattern to the discharge. Discharge and load are in strong relationship. And based on regression equation, pollutant loads from groundwater irrigation area are estimated to be 288.34, 1.17, and 5.45 kg/ha for CO $D_{cr}$ , T-P, and T-N, respectively, which was relatively lower than the literature value from surface water irrigation area which implies that groundwater irrigation area might use less irrigation water and result in less drainage water, Therefore, total pollutant load from paddies irrigation with groundwater could be significantly lower than that with surface water. This study shows that agricultural drainage water management needs a good care of drainage outlet as well as rainfall runoff. This study was based on limited monitoring data of one year, and further monitoring and successive analysis are recommended for more generalized conclusion.
Fertigation, which has been introduced in agricultural fields since 1990, has been widely practiced in upland fields as well as in plastic film houses as part of the crop production system. In accordance with demands in the agricultural sector, a huge number of scientific studies on fertigation have been conducted worldwide. Moreover, with a combination of advanced technologies such as big-data, machine learning, etc., fertigation is positioned as an indispensable tool to achieve sustainable crop production and to enhance nutrient and water use efficiency. In this review, we focused on providing valuable information in terms of crop production and nutrient/water use efficiency. A variety of fertigation studies have described that enhancement of crop production did not differ relative to conventional method or slightly increased. In contrast, fertigation significantly improved nutrient/water use efficiency, with a reduction in use ranging from 20 to 50%. Water-soluble organic resources such as livestock manure and agricultural byproducts also have been identified as useful resources like chemical fertilizers. Furthermore, the initial irrigation point was generally recommended in a range of -10 - -40 kPa, although the point differed according to the crop and crop growth stage. From this review, we suggest that fertigation, which is closely integrated with advanced technology, could be a leading technology to attain not only food security but also carbon neutrality via improvement of nutrient/water use efficiency.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the existing methods for calculating or estimating the consumptive use (Evaportranspiration) of any agricutural development project area. In determing the consumptive use water in the project area, there will require the best way for estimating irrigation requirement. Many methods for computing the evaportranspiration have been used, each of them with its merits and demerits at home and abroad. Some of these methods are listed as follows: 1.The Penman's formula 2.The B1aney-Criddle method 3.The Munson P.E. Index method 4.The Atmometer method 5.The Texas Water Rights Commission (TWRC) method 6.The Jensen-Haise method 7.The Christiasen method Therefore, the authors will introduce the more widely used method for calculating Consumptive Use by G.H. Hargreaves. The formula is expressed in the form Ep= K·d·T (1.0-0.01·Hn) Hn=1.0+0.4H+0.005H2. This method was adopted for the first time to determine the Irrigation requirements of Ogseo Comprehensive Agricultual Development project (Benefited area:100,500ha) in Korea. This method is presented in somewhat greater detail than the others. Formula is given for the computation of evaportranspiration (with various levels of data availability) Sampel computation of irrigation requirements for Ogseo irrigation project is included. The results and applied materials are summarized as follows. 1. In calculating the Hargreaves formula, the mean temperature relative, humidity, length of day, and percentage of sunshine from three stations of Iri, Jeonju, and Gunsan were used. 2. Monthly evaporation values were calculated by using the formula. 3. Meteological data from the three stations records for the ten years (1963∼1972) were used. 4. The annual irrigation requirements is 1,186mm per hectare, but the case to consider effective rainfall amount takes the annual irrigation demand being 700mm per hectare.

The purpose of this study is to develop soil salt prediction model for the estimation of irrigation water requirements for dry field crops in reclaimed tidelands. The simulation model based on water balance equation, salt balance equation, and salt storage equation was developed for daily prediction of sa]t concentration in root zone. The data obtained from field measurement during the growing period of tomato were used to evaluate the applicability of this model. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1.The optimum irrigation point which maximizes the crop yield in reclaimed tidelands of silt loam soil while maintaining the salt concentration within the tolerance level, ws found to be pF 1.6, and total irrigation requirement after transplanting was 602mm(6.7 mm/day)for tomato. 2.When the irrigation point was pF 1.6, the deviation between predicted and measured salt concentration was less than 4 % at the significance level of 1 7% 3.Since the deviations between predicted and measured values data decrease as the amount of irrigation water increases, the proposed model appear to be more suitable for use in reclaimed tidelands. 4.The amount of irrigation water estimated by the simulation model was 7.2mm/day in the average for cultivating tomato at the optimum irrigation point of pF 1.6.The simulation model proposed in this study can be generalized by applying it to other crops. This, model, also, could be further improved and extended to estimate desalinization effects in reclaimed tidelands by including meteorological effect, capillary phenomenon, and infiltration.

The number of people who own indoor plants is growing today, but as a result of their busy lifestyles-such as work or travel-as well as a lack of enthusiasm in caring for their plants, their plants wither. The use of an irrigation control system with a surveillance camera can assist such folks in taking care of their plants. Such a device can assist in remotely watering plants at predetermined times and checking on the health of the plants. The proprietors would be able to live comfortably without feeling bad thanks to this change. Internet access is required for this technology in order to monitor the plants and control the watering through apps. A sensor is installed in the soil to monitor soil humidity and send data to the microcontroller for irrigation, allowing the owner to schedule irrigation as they see fit and keep an eye on their plants all day. With the use of a remote irrigation control system, the plants will grow properly and be irrigated with the proper amount of water, and the owners will be so glad and delighted to watch their plants. Knowing the time and quantity of water are vital parts of the plant growth.

The objectives of this study were to develop a hydrologic simulation model to estimate surface drainage for irrigation districts consisting of paddy and protected cultivation, and to evaluate the applicability of the developed model. The model consists of three sub-models; agricultural supply, paddy block drainage, and protected cultivation runoff. The model simulates daily total drainage as the sum of paddy field drainage, irrigation canal drainage, and protected cultivation runoff at the outlets of the irrigation districts. The agricultural supply sub-model was formulated considering crop water requirement for growing seasons and agricultural water management loss. Agricultural supply was calculated for use as input data for the paddy block sub-model. The paddy block drainage sub-model simulates paddy field drainage based on water balance, and irrigation canal drainage as a fraction of agricultural supply. Protected cultivation runoff is calculated based on NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) curve number method. The Idong reservoir irrigation district was selected for surface drainage monitoring and model verification. The parameters of model were calibrated using a trial and error technique, and validated with the measured data from the study site. The model can be a useful tool to estimate surface drainage for irrigated districts consisting of paddy and protected cultivation.
