  • The component-based modeling framework for agricultural water-resources management (COMFARM) is a user-friendly, highly interoperable, lightweight modeling framework that supports the development of watershed-specific domain components. The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of the COMFARM for the design and creation of a component-based modeling system of agricultural reservoir watersheds. A case study that focused on a particular modeling system was conducted on a watershed that includes the Daehwa and Dangwol serial irrigation reservoirs. The hydrologic modeling system for the study area was constructed with linkable components, including the modified Tank, an agricultural water supply and drainage model, and a reservoir water balance model. The model parameters were each calibrated for two years, based on observed reservoir water levels. The simulated results were in good agreement with the observed data. In addition, the applicability of the COMFARM was evaluated for regions where reservoir outflows, including not only spillway release but also return flow by irrigation water supply, substantially affect the downstream river discharge. The COMFARM could help to develop effective water-management measures by allowing the construction of a modeling system and evaluation of multiple operational scenarios customized for a specific watershed.

  • Joongpyong reservoir and Guiseok pumping station were selected as the hydrologic monitoring sites for the water level gauging and amount of irrigation water use, and water samples were taken and analysed periodically. Rating curves were derived from the relations water level and discharge data, and water supply through culvert of the Joongpyong reservoir was $593,200m^3$ and irrigation water $2,913,000m^3$ from the Guiseok pumping station. Changes of stream water qualities such as water temperature, pH, EC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus were examined, pH was 6.98.1 lower than the criteria of agricultural water 6.0~8.5, total nitrogen $0.9{\sim}4.5mg\;L^{-1}$, total phosphorus $0.008{\sim}0.036mg\;L^{-1}$. The results from this study could be offered as a basic data for the irrigation plan and water quality management.

  • The management of agricultural water can be divided into management of agricultural infrastructure and operation to determine the timing and quantity of water supply. The target of water management is classified as water-supply facilities, such as reservoirs, irrigation water supply, sluice gate control, and farmland. In the case of agricultural drought, there is a need for water supply capacity in reservoirs and for drought assessment in paddy fields that receive water from reservoirs. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the water supply amount from intake capacity to irrigation canal network. The analysis of the irrigation canal network should be considered for efficient operation and planning concerning optimized irrigation and water allocation. In this study, we applied a hydraulic analysis model for agricultural irrigation networks by adding the functions of irrigation canal network analysis using the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) module and actual irrigation water supply log data from May to August during 2015-2019 years in Sinsong reservoir. The irrigation satisfaction of ponding depth in paddy fields was analyzed through the ratio of the number of days the target ponding depth was reached for each fields. This hydraulic model can assist with accurate irrigation scheduling based on its simulation results. The results of evaluating the irrigation efficiency of water supply can be used for efficient water distribution and management during the drought events.

  • This research presents an streamflow modeling approach in a data-scarce estuary reservoir watershed which has been suffered from high salinity irrigation water problem after completion of land reclamation project in South Korea. Since limited hydrology data was available on the Iwon estuary reservoir watershed, water balance relation of the reservoir was used to estimate runoff from upstream of the reservoir. Water balance components in the reservoir consists precipitation, inflow from upstream, discharge through sluice, and evaporation. Estimated daily inflow data, which is stream discharge from upstream, shows a good consistency with the observed water level data in the reservoir in terms of EI (0.93) and $R^2$ (0.94), and were used as observed flow data for the streamflow modeling. HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran) was used to simulate hydrologic response of upstream of the reservoir. The model was calibrated and validated for the periods of 2006 to 2007 and 2008 to 2009, respectively, showing that values of EI and $R^2$ were 0.89 and 0.91 for calibration period, 0.71 and 0.84 for validation period.

  • Irrigation facilities such as reservoir, sluice, and waterways are managed for preparing flood or drought. It is necessary to efficiently measure water level, flow rate, and related data in national-wide scattered irrigation facilities and to systematically manage data obtained from the facilities. This paper presents a management system for irrigation facilities in order to fast and exact measure their states. The management system consists of mobile device with QR-code function, sensors and gateways, a monitoring system and telecommunication networks. In order to present the benefits of the adoption of the management system against the legacy hand-writing way, this paper presents a economic analysis and its illustrative result.

  • The objective of the study is to assess the water quality improvement resulted from the rearrangement of the irrigation water supply systems at Mankyeong River and Ansung Chun basin. There is a mixed type of watershed composed of urban and rural areas in the region. The water intake facilities for agricultural use such as reservoir, weir and pumping station are generally located at upstream river where the water quality maintains relatively clean. However, this study focuses on moving the water intake to downstream and rearranging the irrigation water supply system, then investigating how effective they are for water quality improvement in the river. When the water intake is moved downstream, the stream flow is increased as much as the amount of irrigation water that is to be taken upstream. The augmented flow which is frequently referred to as environmental flow can function as dilution water for improving the quality of polluted water that is originated from the wastewater in tributaries.

  • To examine the irrigation water uses in Sunjin river basin, existing status and operation records of headworks facilities including reservoirs, pumping stations, tube wells, and diversion dams were surveyed and analyzed for the period of 1994∼1998. Daily irrigation demand and water use were estimated for the irrigated paddy field using penman equation, Thank model, reservoir water balance model and daily pumping rate of pumping stations. Irrigation water use from multi-purpose dams in the basin was not included in this study.

  • The number of all agricultural reservoir is 18,000, but the ratio of reservoir is 53% before 1945, 35% from 1946 to 1971 in Korea. Therefore, it may have been required that new management system and maintenance techniques are introduced. In this study, there are many facilitie(50.0%), that have been over 50 years, and reservoirs that have been over 30 years is 98.3% in study. So, this study may suggest that reservoir must be considered as new concept through the change of usage and the unification. On the other hand, reservoir works must be developed as amenity resources, other circumstances and district values.

  • It si presented here that in order to estimate reservoir sedimentation rate through the use of reservoir survey data of 66 irrigation reservoir in 3 major watersheds in this country, the correlation between reservoir sedimentation rate and the following factors; watershed area, trap-efficiency, watershed slope, shape factor of water shed, and reservoir deposition age in two models simple regression model and multiple regression model. Appropriatness of the proposed models have been calibrated from the survey data and as a result, it has been determined that the multiple regression model is much more accurate than the simple regression model. The annual sediment yield is correlated with watershed area and reservoir trap efficiency. It has been found that variation of the annual average sedimentation rate and the annual reservoir capacity loss rate are influenced by the trap efficiency of reservoir.
