  • An experimental study was performed to discover the tribological behaviors of pure tin and zinc coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure tin coatings ranging from 30 nm to 30,000 nm and pure zinc coatings ranging from 500 nm to 52,000 nm were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed for the investigations of the effect of coating thickness on the tribological rolling behavior. Results showed that the existence of optimum film thickness which revealed minimum rolling resistance was discovered for tin and zinc coating. The compatibility of coating matehal to iron showed no significant effect on the rolling resistance behavior. The hardness of coating material revealed significant influence to the rolling resistance behavior.

  • A high-temperature superconductor (HTS) journal bearing was studied for loss. Two HTS bearings support the rotor at top and bottom. The rotor weight is 4 kg and the length is about 300 mm. Both the top and bottom bearings have two permanent magnet (PM) rings with an iron pole piece separating them. Each HTS journal bearing is composed of six pieces of superconductor blocks of size 35$\times$25$\times$10 mm. The HTS blocks are encased in a cryochamber through which liquid nitrogen flows. The inner spool of the cryochamber is made from G-10 to reduce eddy current loss, and the rest of the cryochamber is stainless steel. The magnetic field from the PM rings < 10 mT on the stainless part. The rotational drag was measured over the same speed range. Results indicate that the 10 mT design criteria for magnetic field on the stainless part of the cryochamber is too high.

  • Iron sulfide(FeS) is significantly produced through both abiotic and biotic processes in natural sediments and pore waters. In this study, chromium(VI) reaction with iron sulfide at various initial concentrations and at pH values of 4 and 8 was conducted to better understand the interactions between Cr(VI) and Fe(II) species dissolved from iron sulfide in both the aqueous and solid phases. Also, the removal efficiency of iron sulfide was compared with zero valent iron and other iron bearing oxides such as ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-FeOOH$ and $Fe_3O_4$. The Cr(VI) removal rate by iron sulfide was higher at pH 4 than at pH 8 because more dissolved Fe(II) existed at pH 4 than at pH 8. Chromium and iron(oxyhydroxide) could be identified on the iron sulfide surface with transmission microscopy imaging and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The removal capacity of iron sulfide was much higher than zero valent iron and other iron oxide minerals due to the synergic effect of hydrogen sulfide and ferrous iron.

  • This study was performed to assess the extent of dietary diversity and nutrient intakes of Korean child-bearing women and to investigate the relationships between dietary diversity indices and nutrient intakes. A total of 91 women aged 18 to 48 years old participated. They were divided into four groups by age 15 subjects in teens, 20 in twenties. 32 in thirties and 24 in forties. Mean energy intake was 1638${\pm}$471㎉/day and it was low as 81.4% of the Korean RDA for energy. Mean intakes of folate, calcium and iron were also low as 81.7%. 72.6% and 57.2% of the RDAs. On the other hand, protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and vitamin C were consumed close to or above the RDAs. It was obvious that the subjects in teens and twenties took less all of the nutrients as well as energy than those In thirties and forties. Mean nutrient adequacy ratio( MNAR) was 0.77 and showed a trend to raise with increasing age. Thus MNAR of the teens was the lowest and that of the forties was the highest among the age groups. The results in this study support the previous findings that nutrient intakes of women in teens and twenties were poorer compared to those in thirties and forties. Mean dietary diversity score( DDS) . dietary variety score(DVS) and dietary frequency score( DFS) were 4.1. 11.6 and 14.7. respectively. DVS and DFS of the teens and twenties were lower than those in thirties and forties. DDS significantly correlated to the intakes of energy and calcium only, however, DVS and DFS had significant relationships to the intakes of all nutrients. The MNAR significantly related to DVS and DFS. but not DDS. In conclusion, the intakes of energy, folate. calcium and iron of child-bearing women were not sufficient and their nutrient adequacy highly correlated with dietary diversity. It indicates that to consume various foods helps to enhance the nutritional status.

  • This study investigates the in-situ implementation of bio-regenerated iron mineral catalyst to remove explosive compounds in ground water at a military shooting range in operation. A bio-regenerated iron mineral catalyst was synthesized using lepidocrocite (iron-bearing soil mineral), iron-reducing bacteria Shewanella putrefaciens CN32, and electron mediator (riboflavin) in the culture medium. This catalyst was then injected periodically in the ground to build a redox active zone acting like permeable reactive barrier through injection wells constructed at a live fire military shooting range. Ground water and core soils were sampled periodically for analysis of explosive compounds, mainly RDX and its metabolites, along with toxicity analysis and REDOX potential measurement. Results suggested that a redox active zone was formed in the subsurface in which contaminated ground water flows through. Concentration of RDX as well as toxicity (% inhibition) of ground water decreased in the downstream compared to those in the upstream while concentration of RDX reduction products increased in the downstream.

  • The samples used for this work were low grade c1ay($Fe_2O_3$ : 2.90%, $TiO_2$ : 1.65%) produced from Youngsan-po district, and for the iron-bearing impurities removal having a bad influence on Kaoline sample was carried out column floatatoin using Oleic acid, Potassium oleat, Aero 840 promotor, Aero 870 promotor and Keroseneas collectors. For removal of the iron-vearing impurities from the kaoline, investigated first chemical composition size distribution of Kaoline sample, also performanced a basic study on pulp density, collector and pH change on a sort of frother. The flotation separation of impurities from kaoline can be achieved by using both oleic acid and Aero 840 promotor as collectors within narrow acid limits(pH 2-3). Pine oil was more effective frother than MIBC with olelic acid as aa collector.

  • For over a decade, research and development on submerged hardware in continuous galvanizing pots has been carried out at Teck's Product Technology Centre. The outcome of numerous laboratory tests and field trials has demonstrated that dissimilar materials with comparable surface hardness are most suitable for the manufacture of roll bearings. Wear debris can be easily retained in bearings made of the same material, thereby negatively affecting bearing performance and service life. Bearings made of the same materials are also vulnerable to catastrophic failures. The dissolution of iron from the coated strip creates an iron-rich zone associated with a high concentration gradient in the vicinity of the sink roll. Consequently, the sink roll becomes a preferential site for dross pick-up. In operations involving extremely high temperatures, such as in Galvalume production, the material selection for pot hardware is immaterial to the final corrosion product of the hardware and the pick-up on the hardware.

  • The trends of restoration on abrased teethis mostly based on gnathology or on practical experience. This study was performed on plaster models from 60 young men whose teeth and occlusion are clinically normal. A pair, upper and lower models, were mounted on HANAU articulator. Iron ball bearing 0.2mm 0.5mm 0.7mm and 1.0mm in diameter was attached on mesiobuccal cusp of upper first molar. [table I] Long ribbon shape of cold cure resin was inserted and jaw was closed gently so as not to move disturb original position of iron ball. The resin bite registration was measured minimun thickness from each lingual cusps of upper jaw and buccal cusps of lower jaw by means of Bowley gauge. The results were as follows (graph). 1) The distance from upper lingual cusps and lower buccal cusps: backward cusps showed smaller than standard cusp (upper mesio-buccal cusp) and forward cusps showed longer than standard. 2) The measurements from upper lingual cusps are not coincide with lower buccal cusps.

  • Cylinder frame manufactured by casting is assembled with the components such as cylinder head, cylinder liner and main bearing cap, etc. The mechanical contact between all of the neighboring components due to bolt tightening was taken into consideration. The loads used in structural analysis were the bolt tightening forces induced by hydraulic jack and the dynamic forces calculated from kinematic analysis. The difference of forces between the neighboring cylinders was taken into account. The maximum stress, stress amplitude and mean stress calculated from the results of structural analyses were used to evaluate the static and fatigue strength. Gray cast iron which is material of cylinder frame has the material characteristics of very small elongation and different strength in tension and compression. Based on such an material characteristics, the strength evaluation of cylinder frame was carried out with in-house program developed internally.

  • The outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions in iron-bearing soda lime silicate glass via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is artificially induced in order to increase the amount of ions exchanged during the ion exchange process. The effect of the addition process is analyzed through measuring the bending strength, the weight change, and the inter-diffusion coefficient after the ion exchange process. The glass strength is increased when the outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is added. For the glass subjected to the additional process, the weight change and diffusion depth increase compared with the glass not subjected to the process. The interdiffusion coefficient is also slightly increased as a result of the additional process.
