Experimental Study to Examine Wear Characteristics and Determine the Wear Coefficient of Ductile Cast Iron (DCI) Roll (Ductile Cast Iron (DCI) 롤의 마모 특성 고찰 및 마모계수 도출을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • A pin-on-disk test is performed to measure the wear volume of a ductile cast iron (DCI) roll when it wears down using a high carbon steel and two alloy steels at different sliding velocities between the roll and the material (steel). Normal pressure is set as constant and test temperatures are 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$. In addition, thermal softening behavior of the DCI roll is examined using a high-temperature micro-hardness tester and the surface hardness variation of the DCI roll is expressed in terms of temperature and heating time. Based on experimental data, a wear coefficient used in Archard's wear model for each material is obtained. The wear volume is clearly observed when the test temperature is $400^{\circ}C$ and sliding velocity varies. However, it is not measured at temperatures of $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ even with variations in sliding velocity. From the optical photographs of the pin and disk, the abrasive wear is observed at $400^{\circ}C$ clearly, but no at $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. At higher temperatures, the pin surface is not smooth and has many tiny caves distributed on it. It is found that wear volume is dependent on the carbon contents rather than alloy contents. Results also reveal that the variations of wear coefficients are almost linearly proportional to the carbon contents of the material.

  • The $FeCl_3$ waste solution used to etch various metals contains valuable metal such as nickel. In this study, we recovered as high purity nickel carbonate crystalline powders from nickel-containing etching waste solution after regeneration of iron chloride. Firstly we eliminated about of the iron impurities under the condition of pH 4 using 5 % NaOH aqueous solution and then removed the remaining impurities such as Ca, Mn and Zn etc. by using solvent extractant D2EHPA (Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid). Thereafter, nickel carbonate powder having a purity of 99.9 % or more was obtained through reaction with sodium carbonate in a nickel chloride solution.

  • Corrosion characteristics of 4 kinds of the Fe-Al damping alloys has been studied in the 3.5% NaCl solution and compared with a cold rolled mild steel and pure Ti, No passivation, besides Ti, was observed in the Fe-Al damping alloys and a cold rolled mild steel. Corrosion rate was decreased with lower carbon concentration. In the case of Mn addition for improving damping capacity, corrosion rate was decreased in scrap iron but was not decreased in electrolytic iron. It has been shown that corrosion rate of Fe-Al damping alloys lays between that of the pure Ti and that of a cold rolled mild steel.

  • This study is shown the result of the first year to develop an export 1050MPa-class lightweight ductile iron castings Austempered control arm through the research process to obtain the following results. First, the structure of the optimal design Layout design and development of the component, and then achieve them through the Control Arm rigidity and optimal structure design and robust design of the focus areas of the expected stress Control Arm. Second, to develop a Control Arm reflects the high rigidity and high performance lightweight structures. Control Arm them developed to meet the design and rigidity as required by the consumer through the hollow, and to develop a process for the Core. Third, through optimum alloy composition and heat treatment methods will be derived to derive the amount of iron alloy (Cu, Ni, Mo) and Austempered heat treated and tempered condition. Fourth, through the development of optimum molding technology development component to develop the optimum ADI for the low-stiffness, high-rigidity component development, it attempts to develop a high-strength casting forming technology..

Report on the Conservation Treatment for the Artifacts Exhibited in the newly-opened Kimhae National Museum (국립김해박물관(國立金海博物館) 개관(開館) 전시유물 보존처리 보고(報告))

  • More than 200 objects selected for the newly-opened Kimhae National Museum were treated for conservation. The objects which represent ancient Kaya culture, were mainly composed of metallic such as gilt bronze, silver, copper alloy and iron. The corrosion products on gilt bronze and copper alloy objects were preserved or removed according to their stability. Minimum treatment was done for preserving the original state of the objects. For silver objects and iron objects with silver-plate decorations, silver surfaces were revealed after treatment of corrosion products and treatments to prevent corrosion of silver and iron were done emphatically. For iron objects, which were stabilized, the original shape of objects was restored and acrylic coating was applied to prevent further corrosion. For the objects which were being corroded, 2-step de-chloride treatments were undertaken. The first step was immersing the objects in a solution of 0.3M sodium hydroxide and the second was the pressure de-chloride treatment using borax-distilled water. The main purpose of those treatments was to get rid of the causes of corrosion. Besides, conservation treatments for potteries, making of special mounting board for exhibition and amendment of various modeling were done too.

An Effect of surface treatment on a Protection Ballistic Limits in armor material (표면처리가 장갑재료의 방호한계에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to investigate the effect of surface treatment in Aluminium alloy and Titanium alloy which are used to armor material during ballistic impact, a ballistic testing was conducted. Anodizing was used to achieve higher surface hardness of Aluminium alloy and Iron plating in PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) method was used to achieve higher surface hardness of Titanium alloy. Surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro victor's hardness tester. Ballistic resistance of these materials was measured by protection ballistic limit(V-50), a statical velocity with 50% probability penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed from the results of V-50 test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test at velocities greater than V-50. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. V-50 tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface hardness, resistance to penetration. and penetration modes of surface treated alloy laminates are compared to those of surface non-treated alloy laminates. A high speed photography was used to analyze the dynamic perforation phenomena of the test materials.

Effects of Pd Addition on Electrode properties of Metal Hydride (Pd 첨가가 금속수소화물 전극 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently the Ni/MH secondary battery has been studied extensively to achieve higher energy density, longer cycle life and faster charging-discharging rate etc. In this work, the electrode properties of $(LM)Ni_{4.49}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.205}Al_{0.205}$ alloy and $Ti_{0.6}Zr_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1.4}$ alloy with addition of Pd were investigated. These alloys did not show any change in XRD pattern by Pd addition. As Pd was added as alloy element, the activation behavior was not affected significantly in both $AB_2$ type and $AB_5$ type electrodes and, On charging and discharging in high current density, Discharge capacity with increasing of Pd content was more decreased. But cycle life was showed increasing. Especially the electrode of $Ti_{0.6}Zr_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1.4}+0.5wt%$ Pd alloy was not almost decreased discharge capacity for 400cycles.

Experimental Simulation of Iron Oxide Formation on Low Alloy Steel Evaporator Tubes for Power Plant in the Presence of Iron Ions

  • Presented are the formation of iron oxide layers on evaporator tubes in an actual fossil power plant operated under all volatile treatment (AVT) condition and an experimental simulation of iron oxide formation in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions. After actual operations for 12781 and 36326 hr in the power plant, two iron oxide layers of magnetite on the evaporator tubes were found: a continuous inner layer and a porous outer layer. The experimental simulation (i.e., artificial corrosion in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions at 100 ppm level for 100 hr) reveals that ferrous ions turn the continuous inner oxide layer on tube metal to cracks and pores, while ferric ions facilitate the production of porous outer oxide layer consisting of large crystallites. Based on a comparison of the oxide layers produced in the experimental simulation with those observed on the actually used tubes, we propose possible routes for oxid layer formation schematically. In addition, the limits of the proposed corrosion routes are discussed in detail.

  • An influence of the addition of copper (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mass% Cu) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high purity iron (99.998 mass%) was characterized. The microstructure and microhardness of high-purity iron based samples, which were rolled at room temperature and subsequently annealed, were investigated in this work. The microstructure of the samples has been observed by electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) and the mechanical properties have been studied by using micro-Vickers hardness test. The results of microstructural observation showed that deformation band was formed in high purity iron by rolling at room temperature, and it was recovered by annealing up to about 900 K. The microhardness results showed that the softening of high-purity iron occurred by annealing up to about 900 K, while the hardness of iron added with about 0.5-1.5 mass% copper was kept over 100 Hv and at the early time of annealing reached a maximum. The hardness of iron added with a small amount of copper may be attributed to precipitation hardening as well as solution hardening. The orientation of crystal in recrystallized grain was almost same as that of deformed grain.

  • This paper describes a study of the nucleation and growth of graphite crystal of levitation melted high purity Fe-C-Si alloys with emphasis on hypereutectic composition. Spherulitic graphite was observed to form at high purity alloy and converted to compacted by changing the starting iron from ultra-pure zone refined iron to 99.95 pct electrolitic iron. Residual C-C clusters might be acting as an effective nucleation site for graphite, and sulphur was the element to prevent graphite from nucleating. The graphite morphology changed from compacted to spherulitic as the sulphur content decreased.
