  • An essential step in evaluating and comparing the performance of two passive radiation dosimeter types, thermosluminescent (TLD) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), used by workers in environments with ionizing radiation for individual radiological monitoring and control of external exposure at various times (cumulative dose for 1 month), is to compare the measured dose accuracy, energy response, and coefficient of variation. In fact this performance study consists in determining the accuracy of both R(10) and R(0.07) which are considered as the ratios of the measured dose (Hp(10) or Hp(0.07)) to the delivered dose (Hp(10) or Hp(0.07)) for each photon energy. The validity of the results of this test is based on the acceptance limits of the ICRP and the international standard IEC-62387. The relative energy response used is normalized to the 137Cs 662 keV energy to find which energy response is closest to the ideal case, and the coefficient of variation that allows to determine the statistical fluctuation of the Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) doses. The results of the accuracy test for the OSL and TLD dosimeters are acceptable because they fall within the ICRP limits. For the energy response, the OSL performs better than the TLD for Hp(10) and Hp(0.07), and for the coefficient of variation, the OSL satisfies the requirements of ISO 62387 for both Hp(10) and Hp(0.07), while the TLD satisfies these requirements only for the measurement of Hp (0.07).

  • An increase in the overall biological effect under the combined action of ionizing radiation with another inactivating agent can be explained in two ways. One is the supposition that synergism may attribute to a reduced cellular capacity of damn-ge repair after the combined action. The other is the hypothesis that synergism may be related to an additional lethal or potentially lethal damage that arises from the interaction of sublesions induced by both agents. These sublesions ave considered to be in-effective when each agent is applied separately. Based on this hypothesis, a simple mathematical model was established. The model can predict the greatest value of the synergistic effect, and the dependence of synergy on the intensity of agents applied, as well. This paper deals with the model validation and the peculiarity of simultaneous action of various factors with radiation on biological systems such as bacteriophage, bacterial spores, yeast and mammalian cells. The common rules of the synergism aye as follows. (1) For any constant rate of exposure, the synergy can be observed only within a certain temperature range. The temperature range which synergistically increases the effects of radiation is shifted to the lower temperature fer thermosensitive objects. Inside this range, there is a specific temperature that maximizes the synergistic effect. (2) A decrease in the exposure rate results in a decrease of this specific temperature to achieve the greatest synergy and vice versa. For a constant temperature at which the irradiation occurs, synergy can be observed within a certain dose rate range. Inside this range an optimal intensity of the physical agent may be indicated, which maximizes the synergy. As the exposure temperature reduces, the optimal intensity decreases and vice versa. (3) The recovery rate after combined action is decelerated due to an increased number of irreversible damages. The probability of recovery is independent of the exposure temperature for yeast cells irradiated with ionizing or UV radiation. Chemical inhibitors of cell recovery act through the formation of irreversible damage but not via damaging the recovery process itself.

  • Interaction between high energyelectrons and matters had many complex reactions and the high energy electrons lost their energies with collision and scattering, therefore, electrons distribution in matters was shown as various situation by scattering, exciting and ionizing with moleculars. We experimentally studies with 13 MeV Linear Accelerator and thermoluminescence dosimeter using aluminium and Teflon, etc., and measured energy loss of electrons, electron range, electron scattering and dose distribution in matter. We compared the results with theoretical formular, between 4-qw MeV, the energy loss of electrons was decreased by 2 MeV per $1g/cm^2$ but under 1MeV it was rapidly decreased. Electron range in matter reached to $0.5/cm^2$ per 1MeV of incident energy at 6-12MeV. The dose distribution in matter was increased slightly to some depth by total distribution i.e., the combined intensity of primary and secondary radiant and it was rapidly decreased near the maximum range of electrons. Energy loss of electrons and electron range measured by experiment were coincided with theoretical equations of L. Landau and Feather under 5 and 3% errors respectively. The dose distribution of electrons in matter was similar to L.V. Spencer formular, however, we had found that it was quite different in accordance with the field size and that new formular of dose distribution was induced as empirical function contained experimental factors according to field size.

  • Background: Ionizing radiation causes cellular damage and death through the direct damage and/or indirectly the production of ROS, which induces oxidative stress. This study was designed to evaluate the in vivo radioprotective effects of a bio-active material coated fabric (BMCF) against ${\gamma}$-irradiation-induced cellular damage in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Materials and Methods: Healthy male SD rats wore bio-active material coated (concentrations in 10% and 30%) fabric for 7 days after 3 Gy of ${\gamma}$-irradiation. Radioprotective effects were evaluated by performing various biochemical assays including spleen and thymus index, WBC count, hepatic damage marker enzymes [aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT)] in plasma, liver antioxidant enzymes, and mitochondrial activity in muscle. Results and Discussions: Exposure to ${\gamma}$-irradiation resulted in hepatocellular and immune systemic damage. Gamma-irradiation induced decreases in antioxidant enzymes. However, wearing the BMCF-30% decreased significantly AST and ALT activities in plasma. Furthermore, wearing the BMCF-30% increased SOD (superoxide dismutase) and mitochondrial activity. Conclusion: These results suggest that wearing BMCF offers effective radioprotection against ${\gamma}$-irradiation-induced cellular damage in SD rats.

  • The model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana is the subject of an international genome research project. Massive doses of ionizing radiation have been shown to induce physiological changes in plants. The wild-type (Ler) Arabidopsis plants were irradiated with 100 Gy and 800 Gy of gamma-ray. Gibberellin (GA) affects developmental processes and responses according to the various environment conditions in diverse plant. The 13 GA isomers were analyzed at vegetative (VE) and reproductive (RE) stages by HPLC. Total GA contents were reduced with the increase in radiation doses at VE and RE stages. Specifically, levels of GA3, GA4, GA12, and GA34 were significantly reduced with the increase of radiation doses. Oligonucleotide microarrays analysis was performed with Arabidopsis plants at different developmental stages and doses of gamma-ray. Through the microarray data, we isolated 41 genes related to GA biosynthesis and signaling transduction. Expression of these genes was also decreased as the reduction of GA contents. Interestingly, in GA signaling related gene expression, gibberellin-responsive protein, putative (At2g18420) was down-regulated at VE and RE stages. Myb21 (At3g27810), Myb24 (At5g40350), and Myb57 (At3g01530) was down-regulated at RE stage. In GA biosynthesis related gene expression, YAP169 (At5g07200) and GA20ox2 (At5g51810) were down-regulated at 100 Gy treatment of VE stage and 800 Gy treatment of RE stage in cytoplasm, respectively. However, exceptively, GA3ox2 (At1g80340) was up-regulated at 100 Gy treatment of RE stage in cytoplasm. In this study, the wild type (Ler) Arabidopsis plants showed differences in response with development stage at the various doses of gamma-rays. GA contents change was reported in gamma irradiated plant.

  • One of the important effects of the space environment on the satellites and spacecrafts is the single event upsets (SEUs) which are caused by the high energy particles in space. A SEU occurs when an ionizing radiation produces a burst of electron-hole pairs in a digital microelectronic circuit and causes the charge state to change. We have developed and integrated a software package which can estimate the SEU rates for any specified locations or altitudes under various geophysical conditions. We report in this paper the algorithm of the software and the results for some devices with known parameters. We also compare the results with actual observations made by Akebono.

  • Cosmic radiation environments having extremely high-energy particles and photons cause severe malfunctions of electrical components in space and terrestrial regions. In this study, we revisit basic knowledge on radiation effects in ICT electrical devices, such as single event effect, total ionizing dose, and displacement damage. To avoid such soft errors and system failures, we introduce essential technical approaches from the perspectives of materials, layouts, circuits, and systems, including current research trends. By considering several techniques and Space EEE part standards, we suggest possible directions that can invoke New Space Era technology.

  • In this study, isophtalic neopentyl glycol polyester (NPG-PES) based composites with different loading ratios of pure tungsten metal (W), tungsten (VI) oxide (WO3), tungsten boron (WB) and tungsten carbide (WC) composites were prepared as alternative shielding materials for ionizing electromagnetic radiation (IEMR) shielding. Structural characterizations of the composites were done. Gamma spectrometric analysis of composites for 80-2000 keV energy range was performed and their usability as IEMR shielding was discussed. As a result, the produced composites showed a shielding performance of 60-100% of the lead (the most widely used IEMR shielding material) depending on the reinforcement material, reinforcement loading rate and experimental conditions. Thus, it was reported that produced composites could be an alternative to lead shieldings that have several disadvantages as toxic properties, difficulty of processing and inelasticity.

  • The dependence of electrical conductivity on concentrations of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) monomer, linear poly(DADMAC) and their mixture monomer/poly(DADMAC) in dilute aqueous solution exhibits a linear relationship. It was possible to calculate conversion of DADMAC polymerization by measuring its electric conductivity. Although the electrical conductivity of the poly(DADMAC) solution decreased with increasing its molecular weight, in the process of UV or ionizing radiation polymerization the molecular weight of the polymers could be kept constant in the case of fixed temperature, UV-luminous intensity or dose rate. Based on the method mentioned above, the kinetics of UV induced polymerization of DADMAC in aqueous solution was studied; the overall activation energy of polymerization of DADMAC in the water phase was calculated to be 18.8 kJ mol$^{-1}$ . ${\gamma}$-Radiation-induced polymerization of DADMAC in aqueous solution as a function of absorbed dose was studied as well. The conversion of DADMAC increased quickly with dose before 30 kGy and then increased slowly. The experimental data of both UV- and ${\gamma}$-induced polymerization were verified to be reliable by inverted ultracentrifugation method.
