  • Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) membrane electrodes based on the lipophilic neutral carrier, dibenzo-18-crown-6(DB18C6) and benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) as the active sensors for Tl$^+$ ion have been prepared and tested in different content of the potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate (KTClPB) as lipophilic salt. Dioctyl adipate (DOA), 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (NPPE) and o-nitrophenyl actyl ether (NPOE) were used as plasticizing solvent mediators. Electrodes exhibited good linear responses of 40∼55 mV decade$^{-1}$ for Tl$^+$ ion within the concentration ranges 10$^{-1}$∼10$^{-5}$M TlNO$_3$. Selectivity coefficients of interfering ions (alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and some transition metal ions) for Tl$^+$-ISE were determined by separate solution method and were sufficiently small for most of them. These crown ether type ion-selective electrodes are suitable for use with aqueous solution at pH > 3.

  • Since heavy metal ions included in water or food resources have critical effects on human health, highly sensitive, rapid and selective analysis for heavy metal detection has been extensively explored by means of electrochemical, optical and colorimetric methods. For example, quantum dots (QDs), such as semiconductor QDs, have received enormous attention due to extraordinary optical properties including high fluorescence intensity and its narrow emission peaks, and have been utilized for heavy metal ion detection. However, the semiconductor QDs have a drawback of serious toxicity derived from cadmium, lead and other lethal elements, thereby limiting its application in the environmental screening system. On the other hand, Graphene oxide (GO) has proven its superlative properties of biocompatibility, unique photoluminescence (PL), good quenching efficiency and facile surface modification. Recently, the size of GO was controlled to a few nanometers, enhancing its optical properties to be applied for biological or chemical sensors. Interestingly, the presence of various oxygenous functional groups of GO contributes to opening the band gap of graphene, resulting in a unique PL emission pattern, and the control of the sp2 domain in the sp3 matrix of GO can tune the PL intensity as well as the PL emission wavelength. Herein, we reported a photoluminescent GO array on which heavy metal ion-specific DNA aptamers were immobilized, and sensitive and multiplex heavy metal ion detection was performed utilizing fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the photoluminescent monolayered GO and the captured metal ion.

  • Dimethyl 1-(4-nitrobenzoyl)-8-oxo-2,8-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoindole-2,3-dicarboxylate has been used as an ionophore and o-nitrophenyloctyl ether as a plasticizer in order to develop a poly(vinyl chloride)-based membrane electrode for calcium ion detection. The sensors exhibit significantly enhanced response towards calcium(II) ions over the concentration range $8.0{\times}10^{-7}\;1.0{\times}10^{-1}$ M at pH 3.0-11 with a lower detection limit of $5.0 {\times}10^{-7}$ M. The sensors display Nernstian slope of 29.5 ${\pm}$ 0.5 mV per decade for Ca(II) ions. Effects of plasticizers, lipophilic salts and various foreign common ions are tested. It has a fast response time within 10 s over the entire concentration range and can be used for at least 2 months without any divergence in potentials. The proposed electrode revealed good selectivity and response for $Ca^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. The selectivity of the sensor is comparable with those reported for other such electrodes. The proposed sensor was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of a Ca(II) solution, with EDTA.

  • New lipophilic Crown-4 compounds of 16-membered rings containing furan (neutral carrier,I), tetrahydrofuran (neutral carrier,II) and lithium complex of the latter (neutral carrier,III) have been synthesized and tested as the active sensors for lithium ion in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode, in the presence and absence of an anion excluder, tetrakis(4-chloro-phenyl)borate (KTClPB), 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (NPPE), tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (TEHP), o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE), dioctyl adipate (DOA), bis(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (BEHA), di-n-octylphenyl phosphonate (DOPP) were used as plasticizing solvent mediators. The electrode response function had a nearly Nernstian slope of 54-61 mV per decade (25$^{\circ}$C) within the concentration range of $10^{-1}-10^{-4}$ M LiCl and the detection limits for all electrodes were ca. $5{\times}10^{-4}$ M. The response time of the electrode was faster at the higher lithium concentration and the response of the electrode was stable for longer than 6 months. The sensor membranes exhibit improved response times and increased lifetimes as compared to the system described earlier.

  • Penicillin sensor was manufactured by immobillizing penicillinase with glutaraldehyde on the $H^+$-selective membrane based on PVC-COOH-TDDA. This membrane was not inter fered by $K^+$ ion in Pc-G potassium salt. When enzyme was immobilized with glutaraldehyde, the PVC-COOH matrix was more effective than PVC matrix. Calibration curve calculated from Nernst equation was not linear. But potential was relative to concentration of Pc-G. And maximal potentiometric velocity was also relative to concentration of Pc-G. Therefore, it may be applied to Michaelis-Menten equation. The penicillin sensor was useful for determination of Pc-G at concentration of 0.1~10mM level.

  • Silicone Rubber (SR)-based potassium- and sodium-selective solid-state electrodes have been developed for the portable blood electrolyte analyzer system. The electrochemical performance of these electrodes have been evaluated with a static experimental setup and with the newly developed blood electrolyte analyzer system (model; HS603). It has been shown that their potentiometric properties are essentially comparable to those of PVC-based ion-selective electrodes, but with greatly improved lifetime (200 and 40 days for potassium and sodium sensors, respectively) and potential stability (within $\pm0.1$ mV). Clinical tests have been performed with real serum samples and the results have been compared with those obtained from Ciba-Corning BGA 288 system; correlations were excellent, proving its practical utility as a new commercial system.

  • A thin film optical waveguide sensor has been developed to measure and analyze quantitatively some inherent optical properties of biochemical substances. In this paper, two different kinds of thickness of thin film waveguide were prepared by RF sputtering of Corning-7059 glass(n = 1.588 at ${\lambda}=\;514nm$, Ar laser) on Pyrex glass substrates. We made a sensing membrane coated on the thin film waveguide with the poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) (91 : 3 : 6) copolymer membrane based on $H^{+}$-selective chromoionophore and $K^{+}$-selective neutral ionophore and then proposed the thin film opptical waveguide ion sensor which can select a potassium ion. This sensor based ell the absorbance change by utilizing chromoionophore and neutral ionophore, which changes their absorption spectrum in the UV-vis region upon complexation of the corresponding ionic species, have been reported. The sensitivity dependence of the proposed sensor on interaction length, waveguide thickness, and content of a chromoionophore was investigated. This sensor has the measurement range of $10^{-6}M{\sim}1M$ for $K^{+}$ concentration and 90% response time of duration within 1 min. Also, our thin film optical waveguide sensor using the evanescent field was investigated as compared with conventional transmission sensor or optode sensor by the optical fiber. The sensitivity of thin-film waveguide $K^{+}$ sensor is higher than that of the conventional transmission sensor. The proposed sensor is expected to be useful to biochemical, medical, environmental inspection and so on.

  • An 8-hydroxyquinoline compound that was synthesized with 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxaldehyde and 4-aminoantipyrine was investigated for use as the sensing material of a fiber-optic copper ion sensor in an aqueous environment. The experiment was conducted with a fiber-optic measurement system, in order to evaluate the relationship between the absorbance peak and copper ion concentration. The synthesized derivative exhibited a (highly selective) chromogenic phenomenon for copper ions among various metal ions in an aqueous environment and showed a specific absorbance peak at a wavelength of 530 nm for copper ions. The effect of mercury ions was investigated to evaluate the selectivity of the prepared synthesized derivatives toward Cu ions. The absorbance was measured at various concentration ratios of Cu and Hg ions (Cu:Hg ratios from 0.05 to 20), and it was found that the absorbance at 530 nm tended to increase with increasing Cu ion concentration. The experimental results also showed the linear relationship between the logarithmic concentration of copper ions and the specific absorbance peak at a wavelength of 530 nm. These results indicate that the synthesized 8-hydroxyquinoline compound has selectivity for copper ions and can be used as a sensing material for fiber-optic copper ion sensors.
