  • Trimethylboroxine (TMB) is a six-membered ring compound containing Lewis acidic boron and Lewis basic oxygen atoms that can bind halide anion and alkali metal cation, respectively. We employed Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy to study the gas-phase binding of $LiBrLi^+$ and $F^-(KF)_2$ to TMB. TMB forms association complexes with both $LiBrLi^+$ and $F^-(KF)_2$ at room temperature, providing direct evidence for the ditopic binding. Interestingly, the $TMB{\cdot}F^-(KF)_2$ anion complex is formed 33 times faster than the $TMB{\cdot}Li^+BrLi$ cation complex. To gain insight into the ditopic binding of an ion pair, we examined the structures and energetics of $TMB{\cdot}Li^+$, $TMB{\cdot}F^-$, $TMB{\cdot}LiF$ (the contact ion pair), and $Li^+{\cdot}TMB{\cdot}F^-$ (the separated ion pair) using Hartree-Fock and density functional theory. Theory suggests that $F^-$ binds more strongly to TMB than $Li^+$ and the contact ion-pair binding ($TMB{\cdot}LiF$) is more stable than the separated ion-pair binding ($Li^+{\cdot}TMB{\cdot}F^-$).

  • The chloride ion penetrating into concrete is classified as the fixed chloride ion being bound in reacting to cement hydrate and the free chloride ion having a direct effect on rebar corrosion because being in solution inside porosity of concrete. Therefore, in order to study the diffusion properties of chloride ion, it is needed to evaluate binding chloride ion in concrete. In this study, we tried to give a fundamental information on diffusion of chloride ion in concrete with mineral admixtures through analysis of micro-structure transformations in concrete and effects on binding of chloride ion in cement paste when mixed with fly-ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume etc. which are used to improve durability and permeability of concrete

  • As S. epidermidis cell was fractionated into cell wall, cell membrane, and cytoplasm, the cell membrane proved to be the most efficient absorbent for lead ion. Utrasonication was effective, when the cells were treated during their exponential growth. The amount of the lead ion adsorbed in cell membrane decreased as hydrogen ion concentration of solution increased. Protein purified from the cell membrane showed higher adsorption capacity for the lead ion than peptidoglycan, teichoic acid from cell wall, or cell membrane lipid. Modification of carboxyl groups in the membrane protein with ethylenediamine and 1-ethyl-3-carbodiimide hydrochloride resulted in a considerable decrease of lead ion adsorption capability, suggesting that the main binding site for lead ion was the carboxyl groups of protein in cell membrane.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcement is the most significant factor of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. It breaks down the passive film and allows the steel to be corroded severely at a high rate. The main object of this study is to determine the critical chloride ion concentrations in the pore solutions and chloride binding effect of cement pastes. It is found that binding chloride ion ratio of cement is between 0.04% and 0.3% and Cl/OH in pore solution under 0.3.

  • Calix[4]crown-6-2,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl ether) (2), which has crown-6 moieties at the 1- and 3-positions and hydroxyethyl functions at the 2- and 4-positions, was prepared for the syntheses of polyester 3 and polyurethane 4 by reactions with adipoyl chloride and hexamethylene diisocyanate, respectively. The ion binding characteristics of monomer 2 and polymers 3 and 4 toward alkali and alkali earth metal ions were measured by liquid-liquid extraction from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. We observed that the polyurethane 4 has a higher binding affinity toward various metal cations when compared to polyester 3, which exhibits cesium ion selectivity.

  • A series of new ligands having convergent dicarboxylic acid functions, based-upon Rebek's cleft-type ionophore, have been prepared and their ion binding properties were investigated by the competitive extraction and transport experiments. The main purpose of the modification was to increase the lipophilicity of the Rebek's ionophore, which was attempted by utilizing propyl analog of Kemp's triacid or by changing the bridging unit. Ionophores 5 and 6 were found to have a pronounced ion-binding property toward Ca2+ ion. The selectivity in competitive extraction of ionophore 5 at pH 9 for Ca2+ over Mg2+ and Sr2+ is 2.0 and 59.3, respectively. The selectivity in competitive transport of ionophore 5 for Ca2+ over Mg2+ and Sr2+ is 29.8 and 99.3, and that of ionophore 6 is 10.0 and 23.2, respectively.

  • This paper researches the Chloride Binding of Cement Paste according to the Ca/Si and Ca/Al Ratio. The mechanisms of chloride ion binding are not completely known, although it is believed that Alumina contents in cementitious system have an important role. For changing cement paste composition, Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) paste is substituted by Granulated Ground Blast Slag(GGBS). With increasing the ratio of GGBS substitution(Thus alumina contents is increasing), The chloride binding capacity has a tendency to increase of binding chloride ion capacity.

  • Deterioration of reinforced concrete structures due to salt corrosion is a phenomenon that can be easily seen, and the main reason for deterioration is chloride ion. Therefore, researches are actively conducted to control chlorine ion penetration worldwide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the chloride ion fixation capacity of Portland cement paste containing Hydrotalcite. For this purpose, cement paste containing 0%, 2.5%, and 5% of Hydrotalcite was sealed and cured for 28 days, and the cured cement paste was crushed. Chloride ion solution was prepared at a concentration of 0.5M using NaCl, and the powdered cement paste was reacted for a specific time in aqueous chloride ion solution. After the reaction, the concentration of the chloride ion aqueous solution was measured using a silver nitrate potentiometric titrator, and the reacted cement paste was analyzed using XRD and FT-IR.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential use of cheese whey protein (CWP), a cheese by-product. The physiological activity of calcium-binding peptides in CWP may be used as a food additive that prevents bone disorders. This research also examined the characteristics of calcium-binding peptides. After the CWP was heat treated, it was hydrolyzed by trypsin. Then calcium-binding peptides were separated and purified by ion-exchange chromatography and reverse phase HPLC, respectively. To examine the characteristics of the purified calcium-binding peptides, amino acid composition and amino acid sequence were analyzed. Calcium-binding peptides with a small molecular weight of about 1.4 to 3.4 kDa were identified in the fraction that was flowed out from 0.25 M NaCl step gradient by ion-exchange chromatography of tryptic hydrolysates. The results of the amino acid analysis revealed that glutamic acid in a calcium-binding site took up most part of the amino acids including a quantity of proline, leucine and lysine. The amino acid sequence of calcium-binding peptides showed Phe-Leu-Asp-Asp-Asp-Leu-Thr-Asp and Ile-Leu-Asp-Lys from $\alpha$-LA and Ile-Pro-Ala-Val-Phe-Lys and Val-Tyr-Val-Glu-Glu-Leu-Lys from ${\beta}$-LG.
