  • We prepared heterogeneous ion exchange membranes (hetero-IEMs) for the application of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). Hetero-IEMs were fabricated by compressing the mixture of ion exchange resin powders and liner low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Characterization and MCDI desalination experiments were carried for the fabricated membranes. Electrical resistance of membrane decreased and water content increased with increasing the resin content in the hetero-IEMs. However, transport number indicating permselectivity of membrane was similar with that of commercial homogenesous ion exchange membrane. The results of MCDI desalination experiments showed that the adsorption amount for hetero-IEM was about 90% of that of homogeneous membrane due to the high electrical resistance of hetero-IEM. Although desalination performance of hetero-IEM decreased compared with homogeneous membrane, it was thought to be applicable to MCDI because of simple preparation and low price.

  • Membrane characterization methods for aqueous redox flow batteries aqueous RFBs were modified for non-aqueous RFBs. The modified characterization methods, such as ion exchange capacity, transport number, permeability and single cell test, were carried out to evaluate commercial membranes in non-aqueous electrolyte. It was found that columbic efficiency and energy efficiency in a single cell test were dependent on the ion selectivity of commercial anion exchange membranes. Neosepta AHA anion exchange membrane showed the anion transport number of 0.81, which is a relatively low ion selectivity in non-aqueous electrolyte, however, exhibited 92% of coulombic efficiency and 86% of energy efficiency in a single cell test. It was also found that a porous membrane without ion selectivity is suitable for a non-aqueous redox flow battery at a high current density.

  • In this study, the effects of spacer and variation of spacer height in reverse electrodialysis (RED) on the seawater and ion transport were investigated. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation for a hexagonal spacer was constructed. The results showed that the swirl in the channel and ion transport rate to the membrane were enhanced at higher Reynolds number, on the other hand, pressure difference between the inlet and outlet was increased. Moreover thicker spacer increased Power number and Sherwood number.

  • Here the effect of various amino acids on the separation performance for these two contrastive membranes is investigated. It was especially focused on the structures of amino acids, and their effects on the silver ion activity as well as the interaction between polymer electrolytes and amino acid. The amino acids studied include asparagine, valine, glutamic acid and lysine.(omitted)

  • Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) is a MeV ion beam analysis method for use with particle accelerators. PIXE uses low-energy charged particles as an excitation mechanism to generate characteristic x-ray emission from each element in a target. In PIXE analysis, the beam current used is from a few nA to several tens of nA. Chosun University (Cyclotron Research Center) designed a $50{\mu}A$ beam line from the 13 MeV cyclotron for use with a PIXE analysis system, as well as performing beam transport line optimization research. In this study, the beam line operation conditions for the optimization process of beam transport and beam characteristics are shown.

  • Sugar uptake is accompanied with H+-substrate-symport generally. Both H+/sugar-and H+/K+ stoichiometries during the sugar-uptake have been reported to be exactly 1 : 1. This paper reports that the stoichiometries were enhanced dramatically by the addition of CaCl2 into the medium and by the high cell density of 200 $\mu$L pc/mL. The concentration of free Ca2+ ions in the cells increased significantly with cell density. It is suggested that the free Ca2+ ions are responsible for the change of stoichiometry of sugar transport system by regulation of H+ ion level of biomembrane.

  • Numerical analysis of the transport phenomena in an inductively coupled plasma reactor was conducted with two-dimensional axisymmetric model including the electromagnetic field model, electron and species density models. The spatial distribution of the charged species in the ion flux to the wafer have been calculated to examine the influence of the process conditions including antenna and reactor geometry. The antenna radius had a significant influence on the plasma state and axial ion flux distribution.
