  • The adsorption characteristics of methyl iodide generated from the simulated off-gas stream on various adsorbents such as silver ion-exchanged zeolite (AgX), zeocarbon and activated carbon were investigated. An extensive evaluation was made on the optimal silver ion-exchanged level for the effective removal of methyl iodide at temperature up to 38$0^{\circ}C$. The degree of adsorption efficiency of methyl iodide on silver ion-exchanged zeolite is strongly dependent of silver ion-amount and process temperature. The influence of temperature, methyl iodide concentration and silver ion-exchanged level on the adsorption efficiency is closely related to the pore characteristics of adsorbents. It would be facts that the effective silver ion-exchanged level was about 10 wt%, based on the degree of silver utilization for the removal of methyl iodide.

  • Theoretical calculations on the stabilization energies of framework atoms in hydrolyses Co(Ⅱ )-exchanged zeolite A were made using some potential energy functions and optimization program. The protons which are produced by hydrolysis of $[Co(H_2O)_n]^{2+}$ ion in large cavity showed a tendency to attack the framework oxygen atom O(1) preferentially, and the oxygen atom O(4) within OH- ion was coordinated at Al atom. The weakness of bonds between T(Si, Al) and oxygen by attack of proton and too large coordination number around small aluminum atom will make the framework of Co(Ⅱ)-exchanged zeolite A more unstable. The stabilization energy of $Co_4Na_4$-A framework (- 361.57 kcal/mol) was less than that of thermally stable zeolite A($Na_{12-}$A: - 419.68 kcal/mol) and greater than that of extremely unstable Ba(Ⅱ)-exchanged zeolite A($Ba_{6-}$A: - 324.01 kcal/mol). All the data of powder X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy of Co(Ⅱ)-exchanged zeolite A showed the evidence of instability of its framework in agreement with the theoretical calculation. Three different groups of water molecules are found in hydrated Co(Ⅱ )-exchanged zeolite A; W(Ⅰ) group of water molecules having only hydrogen-bonds, W(Ⅱ) group water coordinated to $Na^+$ ion, ans W(Ⅲ) group water coordinated to Co(Ⅱ) ion. The averaged interaction energy of each water group shows the decreasing order of W(Ⅲ)>W(Ⅱ)>W(Ⅰ).

  • A zeolite material (ZCH) was synthesized from coal fly ash in an HD thermal power plant using a fusion/hydrothermal method. ZCH with high crystallinity could be synthesized at the NaOH/CFA ratio of 0.9. Ion-exchanged ZCH adsorbents for ammonia removal were prepared by ion-exchanging various cation (Cu2+, Co2+, Fe3+, and Mn2+) on the ZCH. They were used to evaluate the ammonia adsorption breakthrough curves and adsorption capacities. The ammonia adsorption capacities of the ZCH and ion-exchanged ZCHs were high in the order of Mn-ZCH > Cu-ZCH ≅ Co-ZCH > Fe-ZCH > ZCH according to NH3-TPD measurements. Mn-ZCH ion-exchanged with Mn has more Brønsted acid sites than other adsorbents. The ion-exchanged Cu2+, Co2+, Fe3+, or Mn2+ ions uniformly distributed on the surface or in the pores of the ZCH, and the number of acidic sites increased on the alumina sites to form the crystal structure of zeolite material. Therefore, when the ion-exchanged ZCH was used, the adsorption capacity for ammonia gas increased.

  • A study on the synthesis of zeolite from coal fly ash from power plant was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse industrial waste. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be Zeolite 4A type by means of the XRD and SEM analysis, and then the synthesized zeolite was used as an absorbent to remove the $NH_4^+$ ions in the wastewater and water. In the ion exchange of single $NH_4^+$ ions by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite, the ion exchange reached equilibrium within 10 min. and 1hr, respectively. The amount of ion exchanged $NH_4^+$ to the unit weight of natural zeolite and zeolite 4A were 1.09 and 3.54 meq/g respectively, and the amount of $NH_4$ ion exchanged by the synthesized zeolite was higher than by the natural zeolite. The ion exchange kinetics fitted very well to the Feundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion-exchange properties of zeolites were studied in order to apply them to water treatment. In the bisolute-system of the $NH_4^+-K^+$ and $NH_4^+-Na^+$ systems, the ion exchange capacity was smaller than the single $NH_4^+$ ion system. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion exchange system by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite were found to be $K^+>Na^+$ and $Na^+>K^+>>Mg^{2+}>Ca^{2+}$, respectively.

  • Ammonia nitrogen is well known as a substance that causes the eutrophication with a phosphorus in the water, because it is contained in the industrial wastewater, agricultural and the stockbreeding wastewater. In addition, manganese (Mn) and arsenic (As) are included in the mine treated water, etc., and are known as a source of water pollution. Natural zeolites are used to remove ammonia nitrogen in water but it have a low adsorption capacity. In order to improve the low adsorption capacity of the natural zeolite, ion substitution was carried out with $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$. The adsorption capacity and removal rate of ammonia nitrogen ($NH_4-N$) were the highest at 0.66 mg/g and 89.8% in $Na^+$ ion exchanged zeolite. Adsorption experiments of Mn and As were performed using ion exchanged zeolites. Ion exchanged zeolite with $Mg^{2+}$ showed high adsorption capacity and removal rates of Mn and As.

  • Zeolite X adsorbents with large surface area were prepared for using oxygen PSA adsorbent. Selective adsorption performance of nitrogen on the synthesized zeolite X adsorbent was improved by the cation exchange of adsorbent. The zeolite X which had over $650m^2/g$ surface area was synthesized at the conditions of $SiO_2\;:\;Na_2O\;:\;H_2O\;:\;Al_2O_3$ = 2.5 : 3.5 : 150 : 1 mole ratio, $98^{\circ}C$ temperature and 18 h synthesized time in 50 L reactor. The metal ions Li, Ag, Ca, Br, Sr, etc. were investigated for ion exchange with zeolite X. Ag ion was showed the highest ion exchange rate among these metal ions and all metal ions were exchanged with Na ion at equivalent rate. Compared with the NaX adsorbent, the ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent remarkably improved its adsorption performance of nitrogen at the conditions of $10{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ temperature and 0~9 atm pressure. At an equilibrium pressure under 0.5 atm, adsorption performance of nitrogen on the ion exchanged zeolite adsorbent increased in the order of Ag > Li > Ca > Sr> Ba > K, whereas at an equilibrium pressure over 1 atm showed in the order of Li > Ag > Ca > Sr > Ba > K. Nitrogen/oxygen separation factor of Li ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent was 13.023 at the partial pressure of nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture similar to air and $20^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature.

  • The present work was attempted to improve the performance for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures through the ion-exchanged zeolite membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to either $K^{+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The membranes were ion-exchanged with 0.5 mole/L aqueous solution of either KCl or $CaCl_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. In case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to $K^{+}$ ion, the total flux was decreased from $900\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,500\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ to $600\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,000\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor was increased from $600{\sim}2,200$ to $850{\sim}2,500$ compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. And in case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion is substituted to $Ca^{2+}$ ion, both the total flux and selectivity of water showed the similar tendency compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. It is thought that the improved separation would be possible if the pore size of the zeolite membrane is controlled by the ion exchange.

  • In this study, zinc or cerium exchanged zeolite was introduced to develop a novel anti-corrosion pigment. The primer paint was made using them and was coated on galvanized(GI) steel. The anti-corrosion performance was measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). And scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET) was employed to observe the cut-edge corrosion process of the coated GI steel. From EIS and SVET results, it could be confirmed that Ce ion-exchanged zeolite showed the anti-corrosion performance higher than Shieldex C303 and Zn ionexchanged zeolite. Finally, it was found that metal ion-exchanged zeolite may provide new possibility as the smart cathodic corrosion inhibitor delivery systems on galvanized steels.

  • The characteristics of the nitrogen adsorption with natural zeolite produced in Kampo area according to the chemical treatment by HCl and/or NaOH or the exchanging metal ion were investigated in the pressure range of 100~760torr at $25^{\circ}C$. The amount of nitrogen adsorption was followed at increment in the order of NaOH treatment>nontreatment>HCl treatment. Adsorption amount on natural zeolite treated with 0.5N-HCl/NaOH was improved about 200%, whereas that on natural zeolite treated with 0.5N-NaOH/HCl was decreased. When metal ion of natural zeolite was exchanged with $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Cs^+$, adsorption amount of nitrogen was decreased as the size of cation was increased. But metal ion of natural zeolite was exchanged with $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Ba^{2+}$, the amount of nitrogen adsorption was increased.

  • A series of domestic natural zeolites were investigated to identify the phase and to study the capability of $NH_4{^+}$-ion removal from solution system. It was proved that the natural zeolite from Young-II bay area was thermally unstable zeolite, heulandite by XRD and FT-IR analyses. In addition, the heulandite exchanged by $K^+$ ion showed the highest thermal stability upon heat-treatments. However, the best capability of removing $NH_4{^+}$-ion from the solution system was the non-exchanged zeolite.
